DUKES OPEN LEAGUE PLAY WITH DELAWARE

JMU HOLDS STRONG AT #4 IN THE POLLS

• JMU bounced back with a win last week to move to 9-1 for the first time since 1988, matching the best 10-game start in school history. • It was the second straight week the Dukes held No. 4 in both media polls and the third straight week JMU was fourth by the coaches. • This is the first time since 2011 that JMU has been ranked in the top five and the team’s No. 2 ranking a couple weeks back in the Nike/USL poll was tied for the best ranking ever, matching a 2000 Coaches Poll ranking.

TIED FOR BEST 10-GAME START EVER

• JMU’s began the year with an 8-0 record, marking the best start in 30 years and second-best in school history. • However, the Dukes tied the record for the best 10-game start with their win over UC Davis. • In the 50-season history of JMU lacrosse, the Dukes’ record was set in 1988 with a 9-0 start. • That team lost their next two, meaning a win Friday versus Delaware would be the team’s best start through 11 games ever. JMU has begun a season at 9-2 on seven occasions.

DUKES BREEZE BY UC DAVIS

• JMU had 11 goal scorers and 13 point getters in a 15-5 triumph against UC Davis on March 28. • All 31 healthy players played in the win, and no player scored more than two goals. Katie Checkosky had two goals and an assist while Haley Warden, Halle Duenkel and Daria Lucchesi each had two goals. Hanna Haven also had a goal and two assists. • JMU out-shot the Aggies by 20 and had 15 caused turnovers. Warden had four caused turnovers and three draws, while Corinne Schmidt had three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Elena Romesburg also had two caused turnovers and five ground balls. • The Dukes opened the game with eight of nine goals and eventually led 11-3 at the break. JMU scored seven straight to bridge the halves, holding UC Davis without a goal for 31 minutes. JMU’s defense swarmed the Aggies all over the field, holding them without a single shot for nearly 22 minutes and a shot on goal for 28:20 between the first and second halves.

JMU HOLDS OFF PENN STATE

That was until March 7 when the Dukes held off the 20th-ranked Nittany Lions 14-12. • Haley Warden scored five goals with an assist to lead JMU to its second top-20 win of the season. Elena Romesburg also had three goals and Kristen Gaudian had two goals and a careerhigh seven draws. • JMU and PSU produced six runs of at least three straight goals. JMU had a trio of 3-0 runs and a 4-0 surge that allowed the Dukes to take a 13-5 lead. TRIO ON TEWAARATON WATCH LIST

• For the first time in school history, three Dukes are in contention for the Tewaaraton Award, which is the national player of the year honor for both men’s and women’s lacrosse. • Kristen Gaudian, Elena Romesburg and Haley Warden are three of the 50 players selected to the Watch List, as Warden is a repeat honoree from 2017. The CAA had five total players selected, with one from Towson and another from Elon. • All three players were First Team All-CAA picks last year, with Warden later earning All-America laurels.

WARDEN SETS DRAWS RECORD

• Haley Warden reset the JMU record books as she became the all-time leader in career draw controls. • She won five draws to surpass Gail Decker (2001-04 - 164) and stand alone with 165. It also marked the fifth straight game winning 5+. • Warden ranks in the top 20 in three other career top-20 lists, as she’s fifth in caused turnovers (82), tied for 13th in ground balls (106) and tied for 19th in free-position goals (17).

JOHNSON REELS IN DEFENSIVE AWARD

• After helping JMU to its best start in seven years, moving to 4-0 with a win at High Point, Emma Johnson was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week. • It marked the third straight week the Dukes won the league’s top defensive player award. • In JMU’s 13-11 win at High Point on Feb. 24, Johnson tallied three ground balls and two caused turnovers. • She helped JMU’s defensive unit hold HPU scoreless for nearly 20 minutes while the Dukes scored five straight goals to bridge the halves en route to the win.

She also tallied the sixth-most ground balls in JMU single-season history (51).

DUKES GRIND OUT WIN AT HIGH POINT

• Behind a five-goal performance from Elena Romesburg and a hat trick by Morgan Hardt, JMU came out of Vert Stadium with a 13-11 road win at High Point on Feb. 24. • The Dukes used a 5-0 scoring run to bridge the halves to take the lead for good and held HPU scoreless for almost 20 minutes during that span. • Aside from Romesburg and Hardt, Katie Kerrigan set a career high with six assists.

• JMU won CAA weekly awards in all three phases, as Kristen Gaudian was Player of the Week, Rebecca Tooker was Defensive Player of the Week and Molly Dougherty was Rookie of the Week. • Gaudian tied her career highs of five goals and four draw controls, as she scored the game’s final two goals to led JMU to its first win over UNC since 2000. • Tooker had a career-high five ground balls and was one off her career best in caused turnovers, with four. JMU’s defense held UNC without a goal for the final 12 and a half minutes of regulation and OT. • Dougherty made her collegiate debut late in the second half and made six of her eight saves down the stretch of regulation and came away with two more saves in the first overtime. • Additionally, Gaudian was named Brine/US Lacrosse Player of the Week following her lategame heroics.

JMU’S 20-GOAL GAMES

JMU TAKES DOWN #3 HEELS IN 2OT

• Kristen Gaudian score the game-tying goal with 1:26 left in regulation and fired the gamewinner in double overtime to lead JMU to a thrilling 15-14 victory against #3 North Carolina on Feb. 10. • Gaudian was one of two players to score five goals (tie career high), as she also matched her career-high with four draw controls. Elena Romesburg also had a career-best five goals and five draw controls. • JMU had led 12-9 before UNC reeled off five in a row to take a 14-12 lead with just over five minutes to play. Romesburg scored with less than five to play to bring JMU to within a goal before Gaudian produced the final two scores. • Molly Dougherty made eight saves in just over 24 minutes of action, earning the victory in the cage. She had six stops over the final 17:07 of regulation before making two big stops in overtime.

She led the CAA with five game-winning goals while also ranking third in both caused turnovers per game (2.24) and draw controls (3.29). • The Glen Mills, Pa., native set the JMU singleseason record for caused turnovers and tied the single-season mark in draws. • Warden was voted CAA Player of the Year and later earned IWLCA Third Team All-America and Inside Lacrosse Media Second Team All-America accolades.

JMU IN TOP-20 TO ENTER SEASON

• The Dukes enter the season with a national ranking once again, coming in at No. 16 in the IWLCA Division I Preseason Coaches Poll and No. 17 in the Cascade Women’s Lacrosse Division I Media Poll. • JMU is coming off a 14-7 season last spring in which it won both the CAA regular-season and tournament titles. The Dukes advanced to the round of 16 in the 2017 NCAA Championship after downing Louisville before falling to Penn State. • JMU will face six teams with preseason national rankings, including a pair of CAA squads in No. 19 Towson and No. 21 Elon. Other top-ranked teams include No. 1 Maryland No. 3 North Carolina, No. 4 Penn State and No. 14 Virginia.

DUKES PICKED TO WIN LEAGUE
