DUKES RETURN HOME TO FACE UC DAVIS

DESPITE FIRST LOSS, JMU STILL RANKS FOURTH IN ALL POLLS

• JMU suffered its first loss of 2018 on March 24 at Maryland, but the voters still consider JMU one of the nation’s elite. • The Dukes fell just one spot in the media poll and maintained its ranking in the coaches poll, coming in at No. 4 in both the Cascade Lacrosse Division I Media Poll and the IWLCA Division I Coaches Poll. They were also fourth in the Nike/USL Top 20. • This is the first time since 2011 that JMU has been ranked in the top five and the team’s No. 2 ranking in the Nike/USL poll was tied for the best ranking ever, matching a 2000 Coaches Poll ranking.

HISTORY IN THE TOP 10

• JMU has been ranked inside the top 10 of the IWLCA poll in 17 seasons, dating back to its first time in 1994. In 11 of those 17 seasons, the Dukes finished the season as a top-10 squad. • From 1994-2004, the Dukes were consistently in the top 10 every season, finishing in the top 10 in 10 of the 11 seasons. • JMU has ranked as high as No. 2 in both 1999 and 2000, finishing the latter season as the No. 3 team in the land - a program-best finish. Since 2007, JMU has entered the top 10 in six seasons. • The Dukes have now been a top-five team in 10 seasons.

DUKES FALL BY THREE AT MARYLAND

• Maryland used a four-goal run in the first half and led by as many as five, and despite a late run, No. 3 James Madison fell 15-12 at No. 4 Maryland on March 24. • JMU fell to 8-1 on the year, coming a game short of tying the program record for best start to a season. • Kristen Gaudian continued her strong season, finishing with four goals, one assist and a career-high eight draw controls. Elena Romesburg has three goals, Haley Warden had two goals, an assist and four draws, while Rebecca Tooker had three caused turnovers. • Despite the loss, JMU managed to hold leads in shots (33-32), shots on goal (24-22), caused turnovers (12-8), ground balls (22-14) and fewer turnovers (12-18). • JMU also outscored Maryland 7-6 in the second half, putting together a 3-0 run to pull within two goals late. Maryland made a save with three minutes left and scored a minute later to ice the game.

She ranks in the top 15 all-time in four career defensive categories, including seventh in career saves (452) and 10th in save percentage (.495). • Additionally, Altig is the current associate head coach at Penn State and she will be recognized prior to JMU’s March 7 home game versus the Nittany Lions. • The two will serve on head coach Jenny Levy’s staff in prep of the 2012 FIL World Cup.

DUKES PICKED TO WIN LEAGUE

The top-four teams were last year’s top-four seeds in the CAA Championship, in which JMU won. • JMU returns nine starters, which includes 2017 CAA Player of the Year Haley Warden, as well as All-CAA honorees Kristen Gaudian, Katie Kerrigan, Elena Romesburg and Rebecca Tooker.

5 DUKES NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CAA

• Five players earned Preseason All-CAA status, headlined by Haley Warden, who was voted CAA Preseason Player of the Year. • Joining Warden on the Preseason All-CAA Team were Kristen Gaudian, Elena Romesburg and Rebecca Tooker. Hanna Haven also earned Honorable Mention laurels. • Four of the five honorees earned All-CAA awards in 2017. • Warden was Player of the Year and First Team All-CAA honoree, as she was joined on the First Team by Gaudian and Romesburg. Tooker was a Second Team All-CAA pick.

SHEARER, ALTIG NAMED TO U.S. STAFF

• JMU volunteer assistant Colleen Shearer and former JMU goalkeeper Amy Altig were both named to the United States women’s national team coaching staff. • Shearer will serve as assistant general manager, and Altig will be an assistant coach. • Entering her first season at JMU, Shearer was on the Virginia staff for 19 seasons, helping the Cavaliers to the NCAA postseason each year. That run included six trips to the national title game and a 2004 national championship. • Altig was a two-time All-CAA honoree, having
