The Richey Concert Band Henry Fletcher, Director Nothing in January • February 5, 2017 will be the next concert River Ridge High School Auditorium-11646 Town Center Rd., NPR The band has been around for about 50 years, playing concerts during “season” (November through April). All concerts are now at River Ridge Auditorium. They are free, but a $2 donation is suggested at the door. The band has quite a following! We usually come close to filling the auditorium. I have directed the band since 1973! It has, in that span of time, grown from 18 players, to 85 players some years, especially during the months of December through March - when all the “snowbirds” and Canadians are here. If you want more info, please ask. It is amazing to me that even though the band has been around all these years, that many people still do not know about it! For, even more info, ask the Mayor Rob, his wife plays flute in the band and he attends every one of our concerts.

— YPG Luncheon —

It is with great pleasure I accept the appointment of January Ambassador of the Month by the West Pasco County Chamber of Commerce. I am looking forward to growing my business and promoting all the local businesses in our area. I was introduced to the chamber after transferring from Michigan by my associate Linda Hawkins, who is a long time member of the Chamber. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many people who have the same beliefs in growing the community and businesses in West Pasco County. My position as manager of “Block Advisors “, which is a new brand of H&R Block, is to grow and promote this part of our brand. We as Block Advisors specialize in more complex tax returns such as Corporate, Small Business, Estates and Trusts. For our business clients we help with set-up, bookkeeping, payroll and sales tax. We also deal with tax planning, IRS issues and any other problems our clients may come up against. Our advisors have an average of 15 years of experience behind them. It has been wonderful watching our business grow by establishing our new brand in the West Pasco area with the help of the Chamber. Our website is www.blockadvisors.com for further information.

fic signs and lights miniature buildings and even a working railroad crossing. Safety Town is staffed with a Pasco County Sheriff’s deputy and classes, maintenance, etc. are done by volunteers. Our instructors have been trained on a class lesson plan written and approved by the County School Office of Teaching and Learning. Pasco Safety Town also has facilities for adult conferences, for a nominal rental fee. We are a not for profit 501c3 and operate on donations and rental fees. There is no fee for schools however. Our current need is for instructors. Due to age, illness and other issues, our staff is getting smaller and we need help now. The instruction lasts two hours on Tuesdays thru Fridays and instructors are free to choose any day they wish to teach. We would appreciate any help you can give us on getting our plea for instructors out to the public. Anyone interested can contact us at 813-929-1203. Cpl. Tim Bullock is our town coordinator and he would be happy to speak with anyone interested and/or visit an organizational meeting to explain our program. Thank you for your consideration.

Adoption Day

Pasco County’s eighth-annual Adoption Day, held Nov. 4 at the West Pasco Judicial Center, was an emotional event that allowed our judicial partners to spotlight the positive side of our judicial process. The celebration included face-painting, balloon art, arts and crafts, and a celebrity appearance by Raymond, the fan-favorite mascot of the Tampa Bay Rays. The event, as part of National Adoption Month, focusing on more than 425,000 children in foster care nationwide. 23,000 will age out of the system without joining a forever family. As celebrations commenced in courtroom 2A, families patiently waited for their turn to finalize their adoption. One by one, foster children left the courtroom to attend their respective hearings, returning shortly thereafter as sons and daughters. One family had matching shirts with the name of their new family member and one simple word: Chosen. For more information on the adoption process, please visit the Pinellas-Pasco Heart Gallery at http://www.heartgallerykids.org/

Superintendent of Schools: Office of the Kurt Browning Sheriff by Sheriff Chris Nocco

January is Human Trafficking Awareness month. The Pasco Sheriff’s Office is partnering with several community businesses for an event in January to raise awareness about this silent scourge in our community. Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery that involves the exploitation of vulnerable persons for commercial sex, forced labor or involuntary servitude, plus the inability to extricate oneself from that situation. The trafficker uses force, fraud, or coercion to control the victim. The name of the event to raise awareness about human trafficking is called Light Up the Night. All of the events are scheduled for Saturday, January 14, 2017. The first event is the Radiant 5K Run, which begins at 4 p.m., at the Pasco-Hernando State College Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch, 2727 Mansfield Blvd., Wesley Chapel. An awards ceremony for the run will commence immediately after the race at 5 p.m. The Light Up the Night main event will be at The Shops of Wiregrass mall beginning at 6 p.m. The event will be located on the second level of the parking garage, located on the north end of the mall. This event will include music, educational information about human trafficking, and a kids’ zone. Human trafficking is the second largest criminal enterprise in the world, just behind the illegal drug trade, netting billions of dollars worldwide annually. There are over 20 million persons held in slavery in the world today, more than any other time in history. It is estimated between 500,000 and 2 million are trafficked annually worldwide with an estimated 15,000 to 18,000 being trafficked into the United States every year. On a local scale, according to national human trafficking hotline tips and complaints, Florida ranks as third in the number of calls to the human trafficking hotline, with the Tampa Bay area being in the top three in the state.

Possible indications of human trafficking include:

• Constantly accompanied by a controlling person or boss; not speaking on their own behalf. • Lack of control over personal schedule, money, identification or travel documents. • Transported to and from work; lives and works in the same place. • Debt owed to employer/crew leader makes them unable to leave their job. • Bruises, depression, fear, overly submissive. If you think you have come into contact with a victim of human trafficking call the National Trafficking Information and Referral Hotline at (888)373-7888. Additional information can be found on the Pasco Sheriff’s website at PascoSheriff. com/human-trafficking or the Florida State Attorney General’s website at MyFloridaLegal.com.

Staff Reorganization in the New Year

by Kurt S. Browning Superintendent of Pasco County Public Schools Superintendent’s Staff and I have been working over the last several weeks on a reorganizational plan that restructures the area superintendents and the regional teams and the supports they provide to our schools. I have been meeting with our regional team members to discuss the reorganizational changes and how they impact these teams. Over the next few months, staff will transition into the following positions:   Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Schools, Dr. Dave Scanga; Assistant Superintendent for High Schools, Tammy Berryhill; Assistant Superintendent for DA Schools, Dr. Monica Ilse; and, and Kim Poe serving in an executive director position with the specific role of assisting Drs. Ilse and Scanga.  The Assistant Superintendent for Middle Schools will be advertised and filled during the second semester.  This reorganizational plan does not add any new additional positions to the administrative staff. Todd Cluff, Area Superintendent for the Northwest Region, has expressed a desire to return to school based leadership.  We are continuing to work with Todd to ensure that he is able to use his skill set and leadership in our schools. I have set the structure and we are working on the details of what the supports will look like for our schools, how they will be delivered, communications and feedback loops and accountability measures for all stakeholders.
