Unique New Year’s Resolutions We’ve all heard the popular

resolutions: “Lose weight,” “Get fit,” “Save money,” “Get organized,” “Take a vacation,” and “Live life to the fullest.” For 2018, we’re sharing some resolution ideas that are perhaps a bit less common, but just as rewarding.

Make a new friend

Become an active listener

This may sound easier said than done, but if you try being social and forming bonds, you will feel better inside and out.

Donate So many people need the things we no longer use or want. Consider donating to Goodwill or a local thrift shop.

Pay it forward The next time you’re in a drive-through, going through a toll, or even at the library (where many people have pesky late fees) consider treating the person behind you.

Volunteer

For this one, you do yourself a favor and the person with whom you’re conversing. Maintain eye contact, really hear what the other person is saying, and think before responding. Your conversations will become much more meaningful.

Take a Daily Walk Technically this can help with getting fit and losing weight, but for this resolution, consider doing it for overall health and wellbeing. A walk can be as simple as you want and may just brighten your day.

Go ahead and say “No.” People of all ages and of all walks of life can struggle with saying “No.” The next time you really want to say it, remember that you and your wishes are important.

Share Your Knowledge or a Skill People often have the resolution to learn a new skill, but how about teaching one? Everyone has their areas of expertise and what could be nicer than sharing them for free with those who would like to learn?!

Breathe Take a few moments every day to close your eyes, sit up straight, relax your body, and breathe in through your nose and out deeply through your mouth. You’ll feel the 2

January Highlights Starting January 3rd we will be holding a wonderful book club hosted by Rachel in Activities. Those interested please see the Activities Director Joy Smith Rachel.

It has been said that the custom of making your New Year’s Resolution started well over 4,000 years ago with the ancient Babylonians. The ancient Babylonians were the first people to celebrate the New Year. Although for the Babylonians the year began in mid-March not January 1st.. The Babylonians held a 12 day long celebration known to them as the Akitu. The celebration crowned their new king or reassured their loyalty to their reigning King. They would make promises to the God’s to repay all their debts and return any objects they may have borrowed from the past year. For early Christians January 1st became the traditional day of the new year. In 1740 John Wesley the founder of Methodism created Covenant Renewal Service most commonly held on New Year’s Ever or New Year’s Day. Evangelical Protestant churches, especially African-American denominations and congregations services held on New

On January 22nd Farmington Square will be taking resident’s to Nicoli’s Bar & Grill in Lake Oswego for a round of bowling. Family members are encouraged to join. If you are interested in going please see any of the Activity Assistants to sign up. Mark Turnbull with ComForCare will be returning to Farmington Square on January 16th in our Beechwood and Alpine buildings. He will provide memory magic that will take you back in time.

On January 5th Farmington Square will be taking a group of residents to the Tualatin Wild Life Refuge here in Tualatin. We will have a guided tour of the visitor center to learn about all the different types of bird that fly around our wonderful state of Oregon.

Year’s Ever are often spent praying and making resolutions for the up coming year. Despite tradition’s and religious root, New Year’s resolutions are mostly secular practice. Most people today have their resolutions focusing on self –improvement, and only make them to themselves. Recent research shows only about 45% of us stick to their resolution.
