Jefferson Union High School District Creates Innovation and Design Pathway for Students In order to better address the needs of students in a changing economy, Jefferson Union High School District’s has updated its CTE program to include a Product Innovation and Design pathway. The first class to be offered under this new pathway is Introduction to Engineering Design. The second course will be an advanced design and product development course. As part of the courses, students will learn critical technological skills; use tools and machines; work as cooperative teams; and understand the process of practice, trial, and patience as they develop products for the real world. The new pathway replaces Westmoor High School’s traditional drafting program. “The Product Innovation and Design pathway will allow us to help students learn career practices and problem-solving while building real-world skills,” explained Karen Gnusti, the District’s CTE Director. “We are moving in the direction where the curriculum supports real-world innovation.” The move to the new Product Innovation and Design pathway coincided with the passage of a construction bond that provided for the redesign of several CTE classrooms at Westmoor High School. The new construction will include a traditional woodshop, a fabrication lab, and a technology lab classroom. These spaces, which will be built over the next two years, will allow students to create products from conception through to completion. The school district expects that the new curriculum and classrooms will generate additional interest in the Product Innovation and Design pathway.
