JOB DESCRIPTION: EQUALITY & SAFEGUARDING MANAGER

  MAIN  PURPOSE:   During  the  18  month  contract,  the  Equality  &  Safeguarding  Manager  (ESM)  will  complete  project   work  and  manage  British  Fencing  activities  in  the  areas  of  equality  and  diversity,  and  the   safeguarding  and  protection  of  children  and  vulnerable  adults.    The  ESM  will  operate  at  a  senior   level,  supporting  the  BF  CEO  and  Board,  and  representing  BF  and  the  sport  of  Fencing.     It  is  envisaged  that  after  the  18  month  contract,  a  permanent  role  will  be  created  to  manage   ongoing  business  processes  in  these  areas.    The  primary  focus  for  the  role  in  the  short  term  will  be   securing  the  next  Standard  for  Safeguarding  and  Protecting  Children  in  Sport.     OBJECTIVES:    To  finalise,  embed  and  manage  processes  in  safeguarding  and  equality    To  resolve  operational  issues  in  safeguarding  and  equality    To  ensure  adherence  to  safeguarding  and  equality  best  practice  throughout  Fencing    To  work  with  partner  organisations  to  ensure  that  best  practice  in  Fencing  continues  to   evolve  and  improve    To  ensure  that  BF  progresses  through  the  externally-­‐assessed  Standards  in  safeguarding  and   equality.     RESPONSIBILITIES:     Equality  and  Welfare     1. Chairing  the  Equality  Group   2. Providing  advice  and  guidance  to  the  CEO,  Board  and  other  BF  Committees  and  groups   3. Working  with  individuals,  clubs,  home  nations  and  other  bodies  to  successfully  resolve  ad   hoc  equality  complaints  and  issues   4. Documenting  and  rolling  out  best  practice  throughout  Fencing   5. Delivering  project  work  to  ensure  that  Fencing  is  successful  in  increasing  participation  from   diverse  groups  and  communities

6. Compiling  and  submitting  documents  to  enable  BF  to  attain  the  next  level  of  the  Equality   Standard  in  Sport.     Safeguarding  and  protection  of  children  and  vulnerable  adults   1. To  finalise  draft  processes  for  safeguarding  and  protecting  of  children  and  vulnerable  adults,   including  Board  approval  and  roll  out  to  clubs   2. To  update  and  maintain  best  practice  /  codes  of  conduct  for  coaches,  referees  and  clubs   3. Supporting  the  National  Development  Administrator  in  processing  CRB  disclosures  /  checks   4. Liaising  with  the  Child  Protection  in  Sport  Unit  (CPSU)  and  other  external  stakeholders  (such   as  Working  Safe  Networks,  Call  to  Action  and  Local  Safeguarding  Children’s  Boards),   ensuring  that  national  Fencing  policies  and  processes  evolve  in  line  with  best  practice   5. Liaising  with  Home  Nations,  Regions  and  Clubs  to  ensure  effective  roll  out  of  national   Fencing  policies  and  processes   6. Setting  up  and  delivering  a  project  to  successfully  introduce  Club  Welfare  Officers,  including   work  with  the  CPSU  and  other  stakeholders  to  tailor  Time  to  Listen  training  and  roll  it  out  to   Club  Welfare  Officers   7. Resolving  safeguarding  issues,  including  investigatory  work,  selecting  members  of  Case   Management  Groups,  maintaining  effective  communications  with  all  parties  and   maintaining  case  records   8. Where  safeguarding  issues  contain  allegations  of  abuse,  liaison  with  Statutory  Services   9. Ensuring  record  retention  and  data  protection  in  line  with  legislation  and  agreed  processes   10. Compiling  and  submitting  documents  to  secure  BF  attaining  the  next  Standard  for   Safeguarding  and  Protecting  Children  in  Sport   11. Setting  up  and  recruiting  for  a  Children  and  Young  People’s  Board     COMPETENCIES:   The  ESM  should  demonstrate:    An  ability  to  act  in  a  professional  and  consistent  manner  that  is  fair,  open  and  transparent    An  ability  to  manage  a  complex  and  varied  workload,  often  delivering  high  quality  work  to   demanding  deadlines    An  ability  to  operate  effectively  with  minimal  supervision    Setting  of  high  standards  for  self  and  others    Effective  communication  and  negotiation  skills    A  strong  commitment  to  equality,  diversity  and  the  rights  of  children  and  vulnerable  adults    An  ability  to  occasionally  work  outside  of  normal  office  hours  if  required     EXPERIENCE:     Essential:      Experience  of  either  Equality  or  Safeguarding,  in  a  professional  or  voluntary  capacity    Experience  of  successful  project  delivery      Experience  of  successful  partnership  working      Experience  and  understanding  of  sport    Proficiency  in  Microsoft  packages  (specifically  Word,  Outlook,  Excel  and  Powerpoint)     Desirable:    Experience  and  understanding  of  fencing    Experience  of  working  for  a  sports  national  governing  body  (NGB)  or  similar  not-­‐for-­‐profit   organisation    Thorough  experience  of  child  protection  issues,  ideally  including  resolving  child  protection   issues  and  interpreting  /  defining  best  practice    Thorough  experience  of  equality  issues,  ideally  including  writing  or  interpreting  guidance  for   large  organisations  and  ensuring  practical  implementation    Experience  of  working  with  children  and  young  people
