Research Associate Position Announcement Center for Public Policy Priorities Organizational Information The Center for Public Policy Priorities (CPPP) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization committed to improving public policies to better the economic and social conditions of low- and moderate-income Texans. The center pursues this mission through independent research, policy analysis and development, public education, advocacy, and technical assistance. CPPP seeks to use data-driven advocacy to build a better Texas. We are the home to many data projects, including Texas KIDS COUNT, the Texas Regional Opportunity Index, and the Family Budgets Project. Our goals are driven by the belief that powerful, compelling data combined with purposeful, strategic communications help shape thinking and ignite positive change at the federal, state and local levels. Scope of Research Associate Position We are looking for a full-time, FLSA exempt Research Associate to work directly under the Senior Research Associate on data and research projects relating to CPPP’s policy and program areas. This is a two-year position. Extension of the position will be contingent upon continued grant funding. With a goal of using data to impact community and state-level policy change, the Research Associate must be skilled in various forms of data analysis and capable of translating data into meaningful content for broad and diverse audiences. We also want the Research Associate to help build the center’s capacity in using data mapping and informational graphics to present data in an interactive and accessible format for the general public, media and decision makers. This position is well suited for a personable, self-motivated, highly organized and detail-oriented professional who has the flexibility to thrive in fast-paced environment. Responsibilities of the position will include, but are not limited to: Database administration: o Collecting and managing data from state and federal agencies and other data organizations; o Develop workflows to guide the continual updating and use of all database systems housed at the center (web development not required), including, but not limited to:  the Texas Kids Count Project and Kids Count Data Center;  the Better Texas Family Budgets project; and  the Texas Regional Opportunity Index (TROI). o Perform regular quality assessments to ensure integrity and value of existing data; Data-based reporting, advocacy and education: o Analyzing data to assess change over time and differences between disaggregated subgroups or geographies for presentations and reports by research and policy staff; o Working with the communications team on data visualizations (e.g., infographics & maps); o Preparing data and visuals with policy, communications and research staff for public presentations.

Client Management: o Working with policy and research staff to produce quality deliverables for grants and professional services contracts; o Identifying and pursuing data-related grant and professional services opportunities. Stakeholder data requests: Assisting with data requests from stakeholders and media; and Other necessary tasks as they arise. While no candidate will have every desirable quality, the ideal candidate would have: Minimum Qualifications: A strong desire to be part of a policy analysis and advocacy team working to improve the economic and social conditions of low and moderate-income Texans; Relevant educational experience (graduate degree preferred or bachelor’s degree combined with several years of relevant work experience); Strong data experience, including conducting quantitative analysis, pulling secondary data; and setting up, cleaning and configuring data sets; Advanced Excel skills with the ability to link worksheets, utilize formulas, and create pivot tables; Familiarity with common data sources and platforms relating to income, population, demographics, and other issues related to CPPP’s mission and policy areas; Experience synthesizing complex data for non-researchers, such as reporters, policymakers, advocates, and community leaders; Experience with mapping software (e.g., Google maps & fusion tables, Tableau); Strong project management skills and highly organized processes; and An ability to multitask across a variety of data and projects. Bonus Qualifications: Graduate degree in public policy, child development, or other field that provides data analysis experience; Experience building and delivering public presentations of complex data; Experience with the Census Bureau’s Data Ferret system and building unique geographic datasets from ZCTAs or Census Tracts through Ferret or American FactFinder; Experience with statistical software (e.g, SPSS, STATA, or SAS); Experience with regression, times series analysis, or other advanced statistical concepts; and Experience with sophisticated mapping programs (e.g., Arc-GIS). Compensation: Salary will be commensurate with experience.
