Ceramics Coordinator (Skillshare Project) £12 per hour, plus use of ceramics room for own work during the year 8 hours per week for one year, starting January/February 2017 An Talla Solais Board via ATS Associate Director

In 2016 An Talla Solais completed the development of its new ceramics facility, including a well-equipped teaching studio and an electric kiln. This new post has been designed to expand the use of An Talla Solais’ ceramics facility through what we are calling the Ceramics Skillshare project. Ceramics Skillshare is a one-year project which will enable An Talla Solais to establish our ceramics facility as a community asset, including organising regular drop-in tuition sessions for specific groups throughout the year, namely those with a dementia and young people with supportive needs from Made in Ullapool, a local social enterprise. You will be responsible for the management of the ceramics facility in its first full year, liaising with colleagues and volunteers to establish good working processes for users. In addition, there is potential for various types of teaching and tuition at ATS and the post-holder will have the option of establishing their own classes or tuition independently of this job if they would like to. Although you will be based in the An Talla Solais office this is a fairly independent job and you will be expected to work on your own initiative. RESPONSIBILITIES  To establish basic working processes for ceramics room users – eg health and safety, storage and use of all ceramics materials, booking the room and kiln, etc 

To clarify what level of technical expertise is needed for ceramics room users / kiln users and to devise and deliver appropriate induction and training processes



To liaise with potential user groups Made in Ullapool and support networks of those with a dementia, to devise regular drop-in sessions for working with clay (in line with project objectives)



To provide oversight, guidance and such tuition as is appropriate for the resulting drop-in sessions



To promote the ceramics facility to wider potential user groups, both practitioners and ceramics tutors, in order to encourage its use



To be the point of contact for potential users enquiring about the ceramics space, and to try to facilitate its use as much as possible in response to such enquiries, eg by encouraging tutors to start classes.



To gather feedback from users to inform future programme decisions



To build up a dedicated list of ceramics tutors, artists and contacts with whom to communicate developments and opportunities as needed



To manage the financial and narrative reporting on the Skillshare project, in communication with the Associate Director, and to ensure that expenditure remains on budget with records appropriately kept



To liaise and coordinate with ATS’s other staff members as appropriate, eg with the Marketing Coordinator on publicity

PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential  Experience of working with vulnerable adults in a teaching / guidance role 

Excellent technical knowledge of working with clay, capable of demonstrating an understanding of the stages of the production process



Experience of managing an electric kiln



Experience of providing induction / training to members of the public in using ceramics materials and equipment



Capacity to manage finances including record keeping and basic accounting within a limited budget



Good communications skills – ability to enthuse users of the facility and potential users, keep them well informed by email in particular, and to report back to ATS staff, committee or funders as requested in a timely and relevant way



Excellent organisational skills, able to juggle varying demands on your time and the ceramics space to meet the needs of the job as fully as possible

Desirable  Experience of establishing / enforcing health and safety related processes in a ceramics environment 

Flexibility in working hours to enable public sessions to run at times that are convenient for users



Experience with social media for publicity purposes



Ability to format a simple advert or posters for print using Microsoft Word or Powerpoint

Terms and conditions Remuneration: £12 per hour In addition the post-holder will be invited to use the ceramics room for their own work without charge when it is not in use by others, for the duration of this post. Working hours: 8 per week, which can be averaged over the month with some flexibility to ensure that specific needs are covered appropriately.
