Job Interview Checklist Don’t fret about forgetting something vital or feel underprepared - follow these tips and focus all that energy on the interview instead.

The days before †† Do your research, know the company inside out, understand exactly why you would be a perfect fit and make sure you’re up to date on any news items relating to the employer. †† Check sites like Glassdoor or Boards.ie - you can often find tips form previous candidates on interview style and even questions asked. †† Look up the interviewer on LinkedIn, even Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. This will help to humanise them and might reveal some sahred interests. †† Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes. What questions would you ask? †† Prepare your answers for a number of different interview styles - practice them in front of a mirror. †† Prepare a list of questions to ask the interviewer. †† Think about the reasons you might not get the job and be prepared to fight your corner. †† Arrange mock interviews with friends and family - make sure they ask tough questions! †† Make the actual journey to the company you’re interviewing with - at the same time of day if possible. It’s more reliable than checking the location on Google Maps. †† Plan what you are going to wear to the interview – making sure everything is clean, ironed and not being worn for the first time. Always choose formal/business attire - even if you expect to waer causal clothes if you get the job. †† Print out copies of your CV the day before. If you’re doing a powepoint presentation, print that out too - just in case! †† Get to sleep early. Leaving your phone alone for a few hours before bedtime will increase your chances of a good night’s sleep.

On the day ††

Pack emergency items like baby wipes or a packet of tissues– just in case of coffee

spills, mud splatters or a runny nose on a cold day.

†† From the minute you leave the house until you are home again, act like everyone you meet could impact on your interview success. †† Arrive at least 10 minutes early – but not more than 20 minutes. †† Greet everyone in the company – the receptionist, assistants, security etc. The interviewers may ask them later how polite you were. †† Be confident! Remember that the company called you, they wanted to interview you.

Job Interview Checklist At the interview †† Give a firm, strong handshake that signifies confidence - but don’t crush any knuckles. †† Be aware of your body language. Sit up straight, look the interviewer in the eye and smile often. Try not to cross your arms or fidget. †† When answering questions, tell a story to add colour and give specific examples of how and why you were successful in previous roles. †† Ask questions about the company culture and how you can be a success in the job if hired. †† Be friendly but remember that you’re always being assessed - even if the interview becomes less formal.

After the interview †† Write down all the questions you could have answered better so that you can prepare them for next time. †† Send a friendly, professional thank you email, or even a thank you card – no matter how hard you found the interview. †† Get feedback on how your interview went. If you didn’t get an offer it’s vital that you understand why. †† Don’t lose heart – it’s a long process and it can be disheartening when the first few interviews didn’t go your way. But with each interview you are honing your skills.
