DESCRIPTION Under the direction of the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), the Director of Public Relations and Social Media is responsible for the creation and implementation of PR and social media strategy for internal and external audiences, and is the principal media representative to all international, national, regional, and local press outlets. This role serves as a key liaison with other Ballet departments and collaborates closely with the senior Institutional Advancement team to synchronize integrated marketing and development activities and leverage earned, paid, and owned media with the goal of brand elevation and holistic patron interaction that fosters retention. Supervises the Social Media and Public Relations Manager and Assistant Manager of Public Relations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  Develop and oversee the implementation of integrated PR and social media plans to reach ambitious attendance and revenue goals for all season ballets, The Nutcracker, and ticketed programs (e.g., Next Generation, BB@home) 

Provide consultation to departments (primarily Boston Ballet School, Education and Community Initiatives, and Development) with PR and social media strategy and execution to help reach attendance and revenue goals and fulfill sponsorship/donor obligations



Oversee institutional press strategy. Develop internal sources for content to deliver informative, engaging, and strategic media placements. Pitch press on organization-related stories that further Boston Ballet’s reputation as a premiere arts organization and a top international dance company



Establish and maintain key media relationships across traditional and new media platforms. Cultivate relationships with members of the local, regional, national, and international media, including reporters, editors, producers, bloggers, and other influencers. Lead the identification and fostering of new media partners to expand coverage



Supervise Social Media and Public Relations Manager to effectively implement social media plans to extend the reach of earned, owned, and paid media in order to create a community of online patrons, increase engagement, lead generation, sales, and donations



Direct the Assistant Manager and oversee all aspects of the press release process, including research, drafting release, driving internal review/approval process, finalizing release, and pitching international, national, regional, and local media outlets. Supervise international press coverage when the Ballet goes on tour, primarily through identifying and managing consultant partners. Oversee dress rehearsal and opening night press coverage for all performances



Participate as a key member of the Digital Content Team; collaborate, and lead when appropriate, on strategy and execution of communications on the web, social media (organic and paid, in

conjunction with advertising), e-mail, and promotions for Marketing and departments across the institution. Establish a clear voice across all channels to ensure the priorities of Boston Ballet are expressed consistently, accurately, and in a way that encourages engagement across a variety of stakeholders and audiences 

Serve as senior member of the Institutional Advancement staff; inform and participate in institutional and departmental decision-making on issues including message development and promotional prioritization, collaborating with department heads and CMO. Communicate new initiatives and results to Senior Leadership team and Marketing department



Serve as primary marketing/PR liaison to Company dancers and work with Assistant Manager to fulfill any PR-related requests for guest appearances or personal needs. Manage approval process of images, including approval of the artistic director, dancers, and choreographer, when needed. Work with Company Manager, Production staff, and Assistant to Artistic Director to ensure Boston Ballet PR and social media activities are in accordance with the dancers’ union, Boston Opera House tenant agreement, and contractual obligations to intellectual property holders



Manage photography, vendor relationships and budget in collaboration with Director of Creative Services. Oversee and organize photo library for Boston Ballet and work with Creative Services team to upload to Digital Asset Management system. Recommend photographers to other departments and advise on contracting process (e.g., Development events and Boston Ballet School classes)



Foster and maintain a network of contacts with counterparts at local and national dance companies, other Boston area arts organizations, and corporate PR professionals. Represent Boston Ballet at industry events, conferences, and meetings. Stay abreast of trends in the marketplace and any new PR or social media initiatives



Supervise consultant temp help when needed

QUALIFICATIONS  Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, communications, marketing, business, or related field  Minimum of 7 to 10 years of related work experience. Proven track record of garnering extensive positive press coverage and nurturing positive relationships with members of the press; relationships within the Boston and national dance/arts media preferred  Excellent verbal and written communication skills, creativity, and superior attention to detail; ability to prep senior leadership and also serve as a spokesperson on occasion  Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a fast-paced team; a self-starter with strong capability to set clear direction, prioritize, multi-task, and work collaboratively; at least three years of experience supervising staff  A high level of energy, enthusiasm, and professionalism; ability to work independently and diplomatically with a cross-functional team to effectively handle multiple and sometimes shifting/competing priorities, projects, and stakeholders while driving toward deadlines  Working knowledge of intellectual property and online best practices  Experience with crisis management is a plus  Some travel and evenings required
