JOB OPPORTUNITY: JOURNEYMAN CARPENTER Skeetchestn Public Works/Housing Department

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Looking for an individual who can do everything from forming and pouring foundations to building cabinets and finishing carpentry. Our Housing department has all the tools, and the equipment, we have a great support staff. We need a dynamic and upbeat person who isn't afraid to work, who can problem solve, and who gets along with people. We do a little of everything, we get some really neat and fun projects (this year we are building a playground and a hunting camp), and there are some great opportunities. This is not a "get rich quick" job, but it could be a lifelong job with excellent health care benefits, matching pension contributions, tons of employee perks, and a great atmosphere. This is a government job, so customer service is a factor here. Must be able to communicate with people and be willing to help out. Occasionally we do community work outside of the position, work with the school kids teaching them to use tools, and pitch in on group projects with other departments in the administration. Job Specifications: • Ensures all paper work is completed for all projects and proposals • Liaisons between Social Housing tenants, RAPP recipients, and the Housing Manager in construction, maintenance, and repairs. • Ensures that materials and construction meet CMHC standards, National Building Code and the BC Building Code. • Assists the construction Manager with instructing and evaluating the progress of apprentice carpenter and preparing reports for submission to the BC Industrial Training Authority. • Ensures all Policies and Procedures as set out by WORKSAFE BC are implemented and followed. • Conducts repairs as identified by Manager of Public Works, Housing, and Construction • Assists to conduct annual Social Housing inspections as per CMHC policy. • Carries out all repairs to Housing/Social Housing units as identified from inspections. • Estimates required materials, supplies and labour requirements for given projects and recommends purchases. • Prepares site analysis and provides recommendations to the Manager. • Monitors progress and makes suggestions regarding changes to construction activities as required in order to meet budget and time deadlines. • Ensures that materials and construction comply with BC Building Code and all other applicable codes. Job Qualifications and Requirements: • Valid Journeyman Carpenter papers combined with five-year as a Red Seal Carpenter • Previous crew leading skills • Commercial building an asset, residential home building experience a must • Physically capable of undertaking various heavy-lifting job duties • Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license with clean driver’s abstract and own transportation • Must submit a driver’s abstract on an annual basis and a copy of driver’s license. • Must be able to complete First-Aid Level I • Must undergo a criminal record check upon hiring.
