JOB POSTING Executive Director - Zero Emissions Building Centre of Excellence The City of Vancouver has embarked on an ambitious path to aggressively reduce carbon emissions from buildings. In 2016, City council adopted the Zero Emissions Building Plan, which lays out a phased approach to transition to a zero emissions standard for most new buildings by 2025. To support this plan, the City is establishing a Zero Emissions Building Centre of Excellence. The Centre will serve as a collaborative platform to strengthen the local building industry’s capacity to deliver cost-effective zero emissions buildings. The City is working with the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA), in partnership with Passive House Canada and the Open Green Building Society to develop, launch and host the Centre. Together, these organizations will form the Centre’s Steering Committee. An advisory board made up of industry leaders and experts will also be established to help guide the Centre’s operations. The position of Executive Director (ED) Reporting to the President of VRCA, the ED will be a forward-thinking, energetic and charismatic leader with a track record of providing vision and strategic leadership within a complex, multi-stakeholder organization. Building partnerships is fundamental to the achievement of the organization’s strategic objectives. The ED will be the public face of the Centre and responsible for realizing the Centre’s ambition to deliver an innovation leap within Vancouver’s design and construction industry. Working with the Centre’s Steering Committee, the ED will participate in annual strategic planning, and be responsible for developing the annual business plan, objectives, strategies and operating budget to meet annual goals. In fulfilling this mandate, the ED will provide leadership to staff and develop strong and effective relationships with stakeholders. Summary of responsibilities  Drive the Centre’s mission to accelerate the capacity and enthusiasm of local developers, designers and builders to deliver cost-effective, attractive, zero emissions new residential and commercial buildings in Vancouver. 

Responsible for staff recruitment, training, supervision, evaluation, reporting relationships, remuneration including benefit entitlement, and disciplinary action pertaining to any staff member, up to and including termination, if/when required.



Manage all aspects of Centre operations and ensures it meets the needs of industry and meets or surpasses its KPIs and metrics.



Develop and reinforce the Centre’s branding, website, marketing and communications strategy.



Lead the Centre’s fund-raising efforts.



Liaise with VRCA staff on operational issues, HR, payroll and administration.



Support the Centre’s Advisory Committee of industry leaders and Centre collaborators.



You will report to the Centre’s Steering Committee on matters relating to Centre performance and metrics.

Qualifications  Ten years of professional qualification as a building design or construction professional – architect, engineer, planner, builder, etc., or equivalent in progressively senior roles. 

Five or more years of experience in a role where you applied your technical knowledge and expertise in low carbon building design and construction projects.



Demonstrable green building credentials (e.g. Certified Passive House Designer or Consultant, LEED certified, have completed a certified low-energy or green building) are an asset.



You are well-known and respected by leaders in the design, development, green building, and construction industries.



Must be eligible for employment and residency in Canada

Knowledge and experience 

Proven success in driving change and growing dynamic teams of professionals



Demonstrated experience with managing a multi-stakeholder organization and an extensive track record of building strong and collaborative partnerships



Strong knowledge of zero emission building practices and an established network within the field.



Experience working with and knowledge of the non-profit sector will be a significant asset, as well as fund raising, government and/or public relations experience

Competencies  You have a natural ability to engage with a wide spectrum of building design and construction professionals spanning between homebuilding and high-rise construction. 

You have well-developed interpersonal skills, you work well independently and can lead and inspire a team of professionals.



You have budgeting experience and are able to read and interpret financial reports.



You are passionate about buildings and sustainability.
