JOB POSTING Title: Director of Fundraising Department: Fundraising Reports to: Executive Director Supervises: team of 13 and seasonal staff and consultants. Direct line management of 3 (Fundraising Manager, Principal Gifts Program Manager, and Donor Relations Officer). Position status (FT, PT, CASUAL): Full-time, 37.5 hours per week, 3-year definite term contract, with the possibility to extend for a further 3 years Location: Toronto Salary: $89,493 Anticipated Start Date: November 2014 POSITION OBJECTIVE: MSF Canada’s Fundraising Department is responsible for raising private funding, predominantly from individuals by integrated direct response campaigns, major gifts, and legacy and planned giving vehicles, to support our operations in the field and our activities in Canada. Since 1996 the Department was mandated to building a sustainable fundraising program which now generates over CDN $36 million annually. The fundraising team is located in Toronto and works in collaboration with many suppliers, consultants and vendors across Canada. Reporting to the General Director, the Director of Fundraising is responsible for developing, recommending and implementing a vision and strategic plan to meet the financial needs of the organization. She/He leads the department, developing plans, policies, overseeing process, and supporting the fundraising team. The Director of Fundraising also participates in an international MSF platform to contribute to MSF’s Fundraising strategies globally, and participates in setting organizational policies within MSF Canada as a member of the senior management team.

DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES: MSF Canada Internal Human Resources

Fundraising and Strategy  Leads the overall implementation of the annual fundraising plan, including completing periodic analyses, identifying strengths and weaknesses and actions necessary to achieve goals  Identifies, recommends and oversees the implementation of fundraising activities to meet targets  Oversees the strategy, design, execution and evaluation of major fundraising campaigns and special projects (e.g. Walk Without Borders) to increase visibility and acquire new donors domestically  Steward and grow a pool of high net worth donors by managing and developing high end donor relationships, and leading the Principal Gifts team in increasing and upgrading individual commitments to MSF  Outlines budgets and resources necessary to meet current needs while developing, and recommending new strategies or drafting proposals for future needs  Monitors fundraising sector developments including legislative changes and keeps abreast of and represents MSF towards the Canadian fundraising network  Represents MSF at fundraising and public awareness events and meets with supporters for funding  Writes, reviews or edits fundraising materials for the department  Negotiates and oversees contracts with suppliers to ensure terms and conditions are met  Liaises with MSF Association Coordinator to ensure that Association members and Friends of MSF groups are informed of, and can help to promote, Fundraising events and MSF Canada activities Internal Communications and Collaboration  Participates in the development of organizational objectives and strategic planning, formulating and administering organizational policies, and in making decisions with an organization-wide impact as a member of the MSF Canada Management Team  Leads the Fundraising team to prepare the departmental annual plan, in collaboration with the MSF Canada management team.  Prepares and administers department budget and oversees relationships with all departmental vendors  Participates in the Fundraising Committee and participates in Board of Director meetings to present annual planning and bi-annual progress reports and to provide information, advice and guidance related to fundraising  Leads weekly fundraising departmental meetings and overseas follow-up on action points  Participates in weekly management team and general staff meetings Managerial Leadership  Leads the Fundraising department by example, fostering a respectful team environment founded on trust, respect, recognition and mutual accountability in a high performance collaborative environment  Manages the Fundraising team (currently 13 employees, with 3 direct reports), interviewing and hiring new employees, carrying out performance appraisals, overseeing the training and development of staff and carrying out disciplinary actions together with the HR department  Supports the team by reinforcing organizational values, sharing information, coaching staff, identifying and resolving problems, contributing to staff engagement and motivation, and improving morale. International Activities  In close collaboration with the General Director and the Directors of Fundraising of other MSF sections, contributes to the development of fundraising strategies, policies, priorities, activities and goals of the International movement  Attends annual MSF International and fundraising meetings and liaises with colleagues from other MSF offices and partnering sections MSF Canada Internal Human Resources

QUALIFICATIONS/JOB REQUIREMENTS Education and experience  10 years experience in fundraising in the philanthropic sector  CFRE preferred, with a degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience  Proven experience in roles requiring strategic vision, planning, and innovative thinking to capitalize on opportunities and minimize risks while managing multiple priorities  Demonstrated experience in successfully leading and managing a diverse team, enhancing motivation, development and performance via constructive feedback and ensuring strategic alignment with organizational goals  Working experience with a humanitarian aid organization and knowledge of humanitarian aid programs is a strong asset Skills and competencies  Genuine interest in and commitment to the humanitarian principles of MSF  Demonstrated success in roles requiring good judgment, analytic, systematic thinking while managing multiple priorities  Excellent written and oral communication skills in English demonstrated in previous roles that require communication with diverse actors, strong oral French skills preferred  A public relation orientation: tact, diplomacy, strong instinct for social protocol.  Excellent team builder, with experience collaborating across internal departments (communications, finance, etc.)  Computer literate and familiar with MSF applications and fundraising software  Ability to stay calm under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and highly dynamic environment.  Flexible hours and ability to travel including to MSF overseas projects

Domestic and international travel and jetlag The office environment is open concept and the Fundraising Director has a separate office space.
