ABOUT WSUP WSUP is a not-for-profit company that helps transform cities to benefit the millions who lack access to water and sanitation. We were created in 2005 as a response to the unprecedented urban explosion that has left cities unable to provide basic services, such as access to a toilet or drinking water, to low-income communities. We are based in the UK with offices in seven countries in subSaharan Africa and Asia. Since inception we have helped over 10 million people access better water and sanitation services. WSUP has grown rapidly to a £10-12m organisation and has plans for greater expansion over the next few years. The organisation is now at a pivotal stage in its growth. In the business plan period 2016-2020, WSUP’s ambition is to raise £65 million (an annual turnover of up to £18-20 million in FY2019-20), but more importantly be recognised as a key player in the water and sanitation section sector globally. It presently operates six well-developed, respected country programmes in Africa and Asia to strengthen public and private sector service providers to improve the delivery of affordable services to low-income consumers. WSUP has recently expanded its portfolio of operations to include the building and strengthening of private sector provision in urban water and sanitation services and the sale of consulting services on all aspects of low income urban WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) to disseminate learning and increase impact. All of these operations are supported by research, communications, funding and finance and resources teams. For more information about WSUP's vision and approach, see www.wsup.com

ABOUT THE ROLE This is a paid internship based in the ERL (Evaluation, Research & Learning) team. The core function of this role will be to support two activities that are key to WSUP’s monitoring and evaluation (M&E) strategy 2017-2020: 1) planning, design, roll-out and analysis of 6 major citywide surveys of water and sanitation service levels in WSUP’s six focus countries, and 2) development and roll-out of an assessment of urban WASH sector functionality in WSUP’s six focus countries. This internship is thus suitable for people building a career in M&E, in survey-based research, or in development research more generally. Work in these areas is anticipated to take up 50-75% of the intern’s time; the remaining time will be spent on other tasks across the ERL team, likely with a focus on M&E and M&E-related areas. We believe this internship offers a great opportunity for people who want to build a career in development focused on data analysis and management, or on research. WSUP takes internships very seriously: we recognise that interns work for minimum wage in order to gain useful experience, and we therefore pay very serious attention to ensuring that the internship experience is satisfying, coherent and interesting. We believe the WSUP office is a great place to be an intern. We note that we welcome suitably qualified candidates who do not have existing academic training or employment background in the development sphere: we are primarily looking for a candidate with strong numeracy skills, an ability to learn fast, and a results-focused working attitude. We note that this intern will provide support to the M&E Coordinator around technical issues (e.g. survey design and data analysis), but also in administrative tasks and logistics (e.g. coordinating email correspondence with WSUP country team around survey logistics); this role requires someone with strong numeracy, but will also involve more administrative tasks. This internship may involve one or more short (one week) trips to WSUP focus countries, to support survey roll-out and/or sector functionality assessment; full travel costs will be paid if such trips are required. SALARY UK National Minimum Wage (currently £7.20 per hour, expected rise to £7.50 per hour in April 2017) ANNUAL LEAVE ENTITLEMENT 25 days per year pro rata, plus public holidays APPLICATION PROCEDURE To apply, please complete our online application form. CLOSING DATE We will not consider applications received later than Thursday, 26 January 2017 at 5 pm UK time.

INTERVIEWS Interviews will be held at the London office on Wednesday, 1 February 2017. We are happy to offer interviews by skype if shortlisted candidates cannot travel to interview. We do not pay travel expenses. This job is based in the UK. We are unable to sponsor a visa application for anyone who cannot supply the original of one of documents accepted under the Asylum and Immigration Act (1996) as evidence of the right to work in the UK. Please do not apply if you cannot fulfil this legal requirement.

If invited to interview, you will be required to bring proof of your right to work in the UK.

JOB DESCRIPTION Job Purpose To support key M&E tasks including a) planning, design, roll-out and analysis of 6 major citywide surveys of water and sanitation service levels in WSUP’s six focus countries, b) development and rollout of an assessment of urban WASH sector functionality in WSUP’s six focus countries, and c) diverse other tasks related to WSUP M&E. Main Responsibilities Support for citywide surveys  Supporting the M&E Coordinator in development and roll-out of the household survey methodology for WSUP’s 2017 citywide surveys. Development of the survey methodology is being supported by a specialist consultant who will help WSUP develop the methodology and apply it in the first city; the subsequent surveys in the other 5 cities will be managed by WSUP. This work component may involve use of the programming language R (either writing code, or checking code written by the M&E Coordinator or others); however, knowledge of programming is not an essential requirement for this role. This work component will likely also include logistics/administration components. Support for sector functionality assessment  Supporting the M&E Coordinator in development and roll-out of an approach for evaluating urban WASH sector change (government policy, institutional capacity, etc) in WSUP’s 6 focus countries, and WSUP’s contribution to any such change over the coming 5 years. Development of the detail of this approach, and evaluation using this approach over the coming 5 years, is being done by an external consultancy; but this will be in close liaison with WSUP, requiring both technical inputs and logistics inputs from WSUP teams. This work component will likely also include logistics/administration components. Other tasks  Supporting the M&E Coordinator in routine quarterly M&E activities, notably involving liaison with country teams as they submit their quarterly reports on progress to the London office.  Diverse other tasks as may arise in support of WSUP’s M&E function and wider ERL (Evaluation, Research & Learning) function.
