JONATHON MUCH CTS VICE PRESIDENT The Proust Questionnaire has its origins in a parlor game popularized (though not devised) by Marcel Proust, the French essayist and novelist, who believed that, in answering these questions, an individual reveals his or her true nature. What is your idea of perfect happiness? The elusive balance between work, family and martial arts training (which is a surrogate for my social life) – if anyone cracks the code, please let me know. What is your greatest fear? Not having enough time to visit every country I would like to see in the world with my wife. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? I’m overly critical and unforgiving of my own actions. What is the trait you most deplore in others? Being late. Which living person do you most admire? Bill Gates. A technologist turned philanthropist, his effect on mankind is remarkable. What is your greatest extravagance? Pre-cut, dried pineapples. What is your current state of mind? Preoccupied. What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Form without function. On what occasion do you lie? Never. Or, only if I need to protect my family. I know that makes me a hypocrite. What do you most dislike about your appearance? My height. Longer limbs would serve me well in martial arts. What is the quality you most like in a man? Loyalty (and respect). What is the quality you most like in a woman? See the previous question. Which words or phrases do you most overuse? “Absolutely” and “it’s okay.” I say them so much my youngest daughter repeats them constantly out of context.

ANSWERS THE PROUST QUESTIONNAIRE

What or who is the greatest love of your life? Without a doubt, my wife and kids – I am nothing without my family. When and where were you happiest? Right now. Watching daughters grow up into strong young girls is the most rewarding experience of my life. I look forward to seeing them continually progress. Which talent would you most like to have? I’d like to be able to do long division in my head. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would like to be able to “completely” relax. Get back to me on that in 20 years. What do you consider your greatest achievement? Losing 67 pounds over the course of 18 months through discipline, diet and exercise. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? A jazz musician during the height of hard bop transitioning into fusion; it would be amazing to experience all of the impromptu collaborations after the jazz clubs closed for the night. Where would you most like to live? What’s better than Chicago? What is your most treasured possession? I have a set of large wooden and glass bookcases that were my grandparents; they are rather tall but not very deep – I haven’t seen anything like them anywhere and people always ask me where I got them or if I want to sell them. What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? Life without love.
