About Journey to the West: Treasures from the Dragon Palace Adapted from a classical Chinese epic, Journey to the West: Treasures from the Dragon Palace is the story of Sun Wukong the Monkey King, his master Xuanzang, and his friend Pigsy. Through puppetry, follow the powerful but rebellious Monkey King as he goes on a quest around the world and the Heavens to hunt down the perfect weapon to fend off evil.

What is Puppetry? • Puppetry is a form of theatre or performance that involves the manipulation of puppets. • It is very ancient. It is believed to have originated 3, 000 years BC. That is more than 5, 000 years ago! • Puppetry can take many forms but they all share the process of animating (to move) inanimate (lifeless) performing objects. • The person who brings a puppet to life is called a puppeteer. Journey to the West • It is a story about the legendary journey of the Tang Dynasty Buddhist monk, Xuanzang • He travelled to the Western Regions (Central Asia and India) to obtain Buddhist sacred texts • He is accompanied by three disciples who were his companions during the journey. Traditional Glove Puppet Stage

This is a traditional Chinese glove puppet stage. Make a guess: - How many light bulbs light up this stage? - How tall and wide do you think this stage is? - How long do you think it takes an experienced troupe to dismantle or assemble the stage? Traditional Glove Puppet Stage This glove puppet theatre stage used to belong to Xin Sia Le, a Fujian troupe that came to Singapore in the 1930s. It is elaborately carved and decorated with gold and brilliant colours. This stage is typical of the Chinese glove puppet theatres that audiences would encounter in mid 20th century Singapore. It was used in many of their street performances.

More than 1,000 light bulbs light up the stage.

The stage can be set up or taken apart within an hour.

1. Bunraku is the common name for ningyo-joyuri which means puppets and storytelling. 2. It is a form of rod puppetry. 3. Was created in1684 in Osaka, Japan. 4. Usually requires three puppeteers: a) The main puppeteer uses his or her right hand to control the right hand of the puppet and the head. b) The left puppeteer controls the left hand using a rod that extends from the elbow of the puppet. c) A third puppeteer operates the feet and legs.
