Celia McKeon has recently been awarded an exciting fellowship opportunity by the Social Change Initiative. We are very sad that she will be leaving the Trust after nearly eight years. Celia will continue with her current role of Assistant Trust Secretary on a full time basis until the end of August and then will work two days a week until November, managing our Northern Ireland programme. We will greatly miss Celia’s contribution to the grants programmes and work of the Trust as a whole. We are delighted that Dave Magee will be joining the Trust as our new Assistant Trust Secretary in October. Dave is currently programme officer at the International Committee of the Red Cross in Belfast. He brings a wealth of community experience, and has also taught Peacemaking for the School of Open Learning at Queen’s University, Belfast. We look forward to welcoming Dave to the Trust. More detail will be sent to relevant grantees about interim arrangements. Janet Slade will be sitting in on trust business from September, with a view to becoming a trustee. Janet is a chartered accountant with many years’ experience of working with charities and other not-for-profit organisations at Slade and Cooper. She is a former Chair of the Ecology Building Society and has also worked as a policy accountant at the Charity Commission.
Charity Commission report on JRCT finally published In September 2013, the Charity Commission opened an operational compliance case in respect of JRCT’s funding of Cage and in May this year it published its final report. The Charity Commission rigorously scrutinised grants made by the Trust to Cage in 2007, 2008 and 2011, in order to ensure that we had acted within our responsibilities as a charitable trust. The Commission’s long and detailed report makes it clear that our trustees acted in good faith, and that the grants were made to further our charitable purposes. There is no evidence that any funds have been misused. We are pleased that the Charity Commission’s enquiries have now finally concluded and that no further regulatory action is planned. Some of the media coverage of this past funding has been very hostile. Most recently, the Daily Mail published an article attacking long-time JRCT grantee Operation Black Vote, and in an early edition used a headline that referred to JRCT as ‘pro-terrorist’. The Trust submitted a complaint to IPSO that resulted in a clarification and apology. The Trust would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the past two and a half years. The solidarity and backing of so many individuals and groups has meant a great deal to us.
