Tech Devices & Apps for Seniors Statistics show seniors are increasingly embracing technology. There is a divide in use between younger and older adults, but seniors are seeing benefits of increased connection with loved ones, learning opportunities, and lifestyle enhancement through technology.

July Highlights

Chaplain’s Corner…. My family's roots go all the way back to Stomping Branch Plantation which was located in southern Hanover County, Virginia. That part of the county was also the birthplace and later the home of a man by the name of Patrick Henry. Patrick was named after his uncle who was also a Pastor and who had left England in 1737 to serve St. Paul's Parish in Virginia.

Did you know? Blueberries are where it's at! This super fruit has the potential to lower the risk of heart disease and cancer, and help to improve memory and cognitive function in some older adults. In those with cognitive impairments, it may be more effective. In a study of 47 adults over age 68 who had mild cognitive impairment, a blueberryconsuming group (versus placebo-consuming) had improved memory and access to words and concepts, per a study cited in 2016 by the American Chemical Society, an organization chartered by U.S. Congress.

Patrick Henry is most remembered for a speech that he made at St. John's Church in Richmond, Virginia on March 23, 1775----it was a speech that impassioned all those who heard it....it was a speech that ended with these memorable words: "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!" It's no wonder that Patrick Henry has been called "the prophet of the revolution." But Patrick Henry was more than just an impassioned patriot....he was also an impassioned follower of Jesus Christ. His dedication and devotion to God began when he was a child and continued throughout his life. After his own death on June 6, 1799 these words were found with his will....words that provide us with an appropriate conclusion to his life: "This is all the inheritance I can give to my dear family. The religion of Christ can give them one which will make them rich indeed." As an impassioned patriot and an impassioned follower of Jesus Christ, Patrick Henry truly shared a lot in common with a resident at Ashley Pointe who went home to be with his Lord earlier this year. Chuck Johnson was born December 2, 1930 to his parents, Alice and Horace in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Chuck joined the military at the age of 17. He “fibbed” about his age and said he was 18, so he could join the Army. During his enlistment physical, the officer put his foot on the scale so Chuck could make “weight.”

I first met Chuck in the fall of 2016 after he became a resident at Ashley Pointe. It didn’t take me long to discover that Chuck had a deep love and commitment to his country. His love for his country was made clear by the various items in his room relating to his many years of military service around the world. He also encouraged me to make a copy of a 20 plus paper that he wrote entitled "Nay, a Ghost Ship!! The Hancock CVA-19 Story." It is a fascinating story of an aircraft carrier that was in service from 1944-1973.

It also didn’t take me long to discover that Chuck had a deep love and commitment to Jesus Christ and His church. And even though we did not share the same church tradition, it didn't take long for us to discover that what we did share together was a love for Jesus. He started attending my weekly Bible study at Ashley and the men's group that I helped facilitate. We also enjoyed many one on one meetings that were always closed with a time of prayer for his needs and the needs of his family. As our friendship grew, he started calling me "Father", something that had never happened to me in my 40 plus years in the ministry. It's a memory that I will always treasure.

Chuck chose to focus on the things that united us as followers of Jesus Christ and not on the things that divided us. We found common ground at the cross of Jesus Christ. We would all do well to follow his example as an impassioned patriot and an impassioned follower of Jesus Christ!
