Junior Researcher at the EFI Bonn Office, Germany The European Forest Institute (EFI) is an international organisation established by European States. EFI undertakes forest research and policy support at pan-European and global levels. EFI’s Headquarters is located in Joensuu, Finland. EFI has several offices across Europe, and project offices in Malaysia and China. The Institute has app. 100 staff members and has an annual turnover of app. 14 million Euros. EFI is seeking a dynamic Junior Researcher to join its Social Sciences team within the Resilience Programme at its new office in Bonn, Germany. The Resilience Programme is a new research programme at EFI. It aims to advance knowledge on the role of European forests as a green infrastructure in a global change context, delivering key ecosystem services for Europe’s societies. The Programme addresses the impacts of climate change, the need for adaptive forest management strategies, biodiversity as well as the role of forests in fostering resilient rural and urban areas. It will apply an inter and transdisciplinary perspective focussing on socio-ecological systems and will work at the science-policy-society interface. Further information is available here. Key responsibilities will include:   

Conduct empirical social research within a European research project related to forestry/land use and biodiversity conservation with research stays in Spain, France and possibly Scotland/UK Publish research findings in both academic journals and policy and practice oriented media Engage in communication and science-policy interactions activities

Qualifications: • • • • • • •

MSc in forestry or related disciplines, preferably with a focus on social science aspects of forestry/land use/environment Demonstrable interest in social science aspects of forestry/forest management and biodiversity conservation Knowledge relating to forest management, biodiversity conservation and related policies International experience, e.g demonstrated by internships, studies abroad and/or international courses, international work experience Willingness to partially work abroad (field research in Spain, France and possibly Scotland) Interest to work towards both new research findings and recommendations for policy makers Excellent spoken and written skills in English are essential. Knowledge of Spanish or French is desirable; the applicant should be able to do empirical social research in one of these languages.

Duty Station The employee will be based at EFI’s new Office in Bonn, Germany. Employment Conditions The employee will be an EFI staff member. The duration of employment will be three years with the possibility for an extension. This is a part time position equivalent to 70% of a full time position. The acquirement of a PhD related to the project research is encouraged and will be supported by EFI. EFI offers a competitive benefits and salary package.
