Otago University and Kaikorai will go head to head at the University of Otago Oval as 1st place meets 4th. Otago University have returned to the top 4 after a hiatus in 2017. The bookworms have had a near perfect season and finished 7 points clear at the top of the standings and 14 clear of their semi-final opponents. Kaikorai enter tomorrow’s semi-final on a wave of momentum. Down and out after the first round of the competition, registering just the 3 wins, Kaikorai surged in the second round, winning 6 out of their last 7 fixtures to lock in 4th spot. It is the 3rd consecutive year that Kaikorai have finished 4th and you only have to go back to 2016, where a very similar 2nd round surge ended with a Championship at seasons end. Player Watch: Kilipati Lea (Otago University) is enjoying a great year on the field. Kilipati is a dangerous man with ball in hand, he has the ability to bust tackles with ease, impressive speed and a great offload. If Kilipati is given space up the middle, then expect the elusive University backs to loom on his inside and outside shoulders. Sam Wyber (Kaikorai) is fast becoming a cult hero for the Demon faithful. The big man has one of the best running games in the competition, and is often found roaming in the wide channels. Wyber possess great speed and foot work, and the uncanny ability to create something out of nothing.

Semi Final footy returns to the Peter Johnstone Park on Saturday when Taieri (2nd) host Harbour (3rd). Taieri is the most successful Metropolitan Premier 1 team in the last 10 years, playing in 5 straight finals from 2011-2015, winning 3 (2011, 2012 and 2014), whilst Harbour are no strangers themselves having been a part of the finals in 5 of the last 8 years including the final in 2011 and 2017. Taieri started the season with a bang, going through round 1 with a 6 win, 1 draw 1 loss record and winning the Speights Jug. Taieri’s return to finals footy hasn’t been as smooth as they would have liked. 3 straight second round losses had the Eels sitting in 5th spot with 3 games to go, however, they steadied the ship and secured 2nd spot on the back of 3 straight wins. Harbour who sat outside the 4 at the halfway mark, made huge strides in the 2nd round winning 6 out of their 8 matches. They averaged a whopping 37 points per game and have no issues in scoring from anywhere on the field. Vinnie O’Connell will bring up his 50th game for Taieri. Harbour won the last fixture between the two at Peter Johnstone Park 33-10. However, this is now knock out footy, whichever side lifts for the occasion the most, will find themselves at Forsyth Barr Stadium next week.
