7 day Kalahari Desert Experience: General Information on the region: All over Africa space for intact eco-systems and humans to exist in harmony are shrinking. These spaces have become islands in an ocean of human encroachment. Southern Africa is still blessed with a variety of exceptional regions which truly makes provision for the preference of each individual. One of these outstanding regions is the Kalahari-land of the Kgalagadi – land of little water and much sand. Place of silence, extremes and immeasurable vistas. Animals, plant and humans are part of the greater whole and give shape to the unique atmosphere of the Kalahari. Kalahari is a word that grips the public imagination. It is a land of huge vistas, climatic extremes, and fascinating adaptations to harsh conditions. The Kalahari offers visitors the opportunity to see one of the last essentially intact eco systems in Africa. This part of South Africa is of significance to the broad eco system as it forms part of the biggest continuous sand mass in the world. This system stretches over nine countries from the Orange River in the south to the equator in the north. The mighty Orange River is a lifeline that runs through an essentially sparsely populated and very dry landscape, becoming desert like on the fringes of the Kalahari and Karoo. The Green Kalahari may sound like a contradiction in terms. But it is here that the sun-drenched, parched desert yields to the influence of the bountiful, mighty Orange River. Here the unforgiving desert, gashed by this lifeline river, plays host to vineyards, date palm graves and pecan nut plantations, stud farms, sheep, dairy and fish farms. The Augrabies Waterfalls, one of the six largest in the world, comprises 19 separate falls and drops 92 meters into a granite gorge, creating the “place of the great noise” of the Khoi. Beyond the effects of the thirst-quenching waters, the land reverts to thorn-tree savannahs, red dunes, black mountains and vast white sands, all under a cloudless canopy of the deepest of blue skies. These same shimmering sands and sky by day mark the onset of call nights with breathtaking sunsets and finally, with the last of the afterglow gone, the stars of Scorpio and the Southern Cross appear. So clear and bright, so close you’ll reach out to touch them. If you’re looking for a truly extraordinary experience, the chance to see one of the last essentially intact ecosystems in Africa, embrace the Kalahari with Kanabo Safaris. Follow the sun, not the crowds, through a land of huge vistas, climatic extremes, and fascinating adaptations to harsh conditions. Kanabo Safaris have experienced just that, for the last 20 years, thus making us one of the most experienced operators in this region. We have adapted and explored to bring this to the friends that we take to this Kalahari-land of the Kgalagadi. A desert experience is personal; we are one of a few true experts in this region
