No. 1 of Term 4, 26th October 2017

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome back to Term 4, before you know it we’ll be singing along at our F-7 End of Year Concert (a twilight event this year) or cheering on our award winners at our secondary Celebration of Success Assembly. This Term will continue our kindy to school transition program and look forward to meeting with our new parents later in the term. We will also host our Year 7 Graduation, with planning underway already for this. Our Year 7s will be involved in a Year 7 to Year 8 transition program. Add to the mix our usual assemblies, F-7 swimming, Festival of Arts, 9/10 Drama production to name a few, a busy term for sure. I’d like to also take this opportunity to acknowledge our Year 12 students who finish official programs/lessons at the end of the week and will head into study mode for final exams. This is no-doubt a high pressure time for our Senior Students, but I have every confidence and faith they will study hard, do their best and be rewarded for their efforts. I want to commend them all for a fantastic year and wish them luck over the next few weeks as they complete their exams and finalise their major projects. I also want to acknowledge Ellie Jones on her recently being awarded the Order of Australia Association Student Citizen of the Year. This is an amazing accolade for Ellie and we know it's been awarded to such a deserving person. We’re so proud of you Ellie! Congratulations! STEM Works Building Start Delayed unfortunately we’ve been advised by DECD that the anticipated start date of the STEMworks building will be delayed due to the tender process taking longer than anticipated. They’ve revised the start date to late November / early December.

Fund My Neighbourhood You may have noticed our school has a project in the Fund My Neighbourhood initiative by the SA Government who will fund community projects that receive enough votes. We’ve put in a project for our garden area in ag to be transformed into a School and community garden. Please support this project by visiting and voting at https:// fundmyneighbourhood.yoursay.sa.gov.au/.

Toilet Smells We’ve begun using a new cleaning product in our student toilets to address the unpleasant smells that have been experienced, especially in our boys toilets which despite daily cleaning have been difficult to shift. This product has come highly recommended and since using it from the end of last term, early indications are a dramatic improvement. Hopefully this will improve the experience for our students. Take Care,

Tobias O’Connor Principal

From the Secondary Assistant Principal—Mr Ben Lamont Student Citizenship Awards On Wednesday 18th October, the South Australian Governor, Honorable Hieu Van Le AC, hosted the Order of Australia Student Citizenship Awards at Government House in Adelaide. We were lucky enough to have our very own Ellie Jones to be nominated and make the final top 12 for this award. Ken Coventry OAM - chairman of the South Australian Branch described the Awards as the flagship project to the Association. 'There are many wonderful young people out there doing some really great things. The Awards provide the opportunity to highlight those and provide an example to their peers. Invitations are sent to all Schools and Colleges that have year 11 and 12 students across South Australia inviting nominations of up to 2 students per school in any one year’. Mr. Jacob Curnow wrote the nomination for Ellie this year and after each student was presented their award for reaching the final, they announced Ellie to be the overall winner and Student Citizen of the Year for 2017. This is a fantastic achievement and is another example of the amazing things Ellie has been doing this year. A citation from Ellie’s nomination reads; "Through school, district sports and community leadership roles Ellie interacts with various clubs, service groups, childcare centers and town café to improve youth and adult well-being. She voluntarily organises community and fund-raising activities in advocating for health and wellbeing of a local and regional rural community. Ellie models positive citizenship”. From all the people at the SA branch of the Association and from all of us here at KAS, well done Ellie and best of luck with exams and the next stage of your life. Mr. Lamont Secondary Assistant Principal

From the Business Manager—Mrs Gae Sandford FACILITIES NEWS! External painting. We are very excited to have the school looking so fresh with the Tolmer Terrace and Naracoorte Road sides of the primary building being painted over the holidays. Thank you so much to Bill Dunn and his team for all their work - it looks fabulous! Further changes will be made to these sections of the school throughout the STEM works, so “watch this space”. Our facilities committee will continue with the painting of the external areas of the school in 2018, reserving funds in our 2018 budget for this work.

“Car Play” Thank you to Jamie Harper and his team for completing our new Car Play area at the Naracoorte Road side of the COLA. This looks fabulous, and the students are very excited to have this new play space available to them. A sand pit is also going to be created in this area, making this previously unused area a very creative and vibrant space for our students.

Updates from our Volunteer Liaison—Mrs Cathy Dix The Learning Assistance Program Background Information The Learning Assistance Program (LAP) began at Banksia Park High in 1976 and is now a nation- wide support program for students in both government and non- government schools, across all age ranges. Volunteers will work on a one-to-one basis for one or two regular sessions per week. This individual time creates more learning situations where students can experience success. The volunteer becomes the student’s friend and mentor, sharing in the challenge and excitement of learning through a variety of experiences. The main aim of the mentor is to support the development of the child’s self-esteem and confidence. Success The success of the program is based on five simple principles: Is always about one-to-one  Is about relationships  Builds confidence and self esteem  Takes a creative approach to learning  Promotes parent and community participation in schools Who are the students? Any student who would benefit from one to one time with a caring mentor. These students have been referred by their teacher and a parent consent form has been signed by parents. Students can also make their own decision to be part of the Program. The LAP Program will run for 6 weeks this term. We have carefully matched the students who will work with volunteers on a one to one basis. Currently we have 6 volunteers involved in this program and I am hoping to extend this to over 20 volunteers next year. If you are interested in participating in this program or know of anyone that might be interested in 2018 for 50 minutes only once a week, then please contact me at school or email me on [email protected] RAN Training at Keith Area School To volunteer at Keith Area School, RAN (Responding to Abuse and Neglect) Training must be updated every three years. If you completed your RAN training in 2015, you are due for a quick update. This can be done online either at home or we can assist you at school. Two update RAN training s will be offered this term at school. If you need to do this update training either home or at school, please contact Cathy Dix to confirm which type of training you would prefer. Year 11 Outdoor Education Camp In week 10 of term 2, the year 11 Outdoor Education class went on their Bushwalking Camp to the Grampians. This camp makes up 40% of their course and the students spent a large part of term 3 getting organised. Day 1 was spent driving before arriving in Halls Gap at lunch time. After getting our gear organised it was time to hit the trail and begin our walk in spectacular weather conditions. What had initially been touted as the “easiest” part of the walk, actually turned out to be one of the harder sections, as we walked through many steep, short hills. After covering the first 8kms fortunately the landscape did flatten out and it was a relatively easy walk into our first campsite. On arriving at camp, we were greeted by an array of wildlife (Kookaburras, kangaroos, emus and a deer) and after deciding on the correct spot, students put their tent skills to the test. Once tents had been erected, it was time to see what everyone had brought for their evening meal. There were some interesting concoctions (Jack and Tom), with most people opting for some form of pasta. Unfortunately one group (Kyle and Zac) had a small miscommunication and their protein was missing, leaving them with a very healthy salad wrap for dinner. Day 2 began with a healthy serving of porridge, before packing up and moving off towards our next campsite. In order to reach our destination, we were required to summit Mount Rosea. This was a challenging task, but all students managed to get through the grind and enjoy the spectacular views of Lake Bellfield. After lunch at the peak, we changed our leadership roles around and we were off again. Our new leadership team (Jack) was setting a cracking pace; however, did manage to lose their bearings at one point and after a brief detour, we were back on track. The afternoon consisted mostly of walking down off the other side of the mount and then on to our campsite. Again dinner choices consisted mostly of pasta with a few rice options thrown in there. Day 3 began with drying out the tents after some overnight rain. Fortunately there was plenty of wind to help this along, but did make conditions a little unpleasant in the morning. The day then consisted of making our way up to the top of The Pinnacle, where we were again treated to some spectacular views. The walk down the other side was beautiful and challenging as we made our way through Silent Street. The final walk back into town followed a gorgeous creek and before we knew it, we were back at the bus. With tired legs, sore feet and smelly clothes, we began our journey back to Keith. After a quick stop at KFC for refuelling, we made it back on time with everyone having had a successful 3 days. A thank you must go out to Nick Lang and the Naracoorte class who also attended the camp and did much of the work behind the scenes getting things organised. It was great to get back in the outdoors this year after Outdoor Ed did not run last year and I look forward to future adventures. Look out for our Rock Climbing Excursion later on this term! 5-A-Side Soccer On Tuesday the 26th of September (Term 3, week 10), 16 students from the year 8, 9 & 10 classes competed in the 5-A-Side soccer round robin competition in Coomandook. It was a cracking day, with the sun shining and a slight breeze! The boys started off well with a win in their first game, but couldn't come away with another, but were very close! The girls were very successful on the day. They come out of the minor rounds in the top 4 so played in the final round. The girls ended cup drawing their final game and ended up equal 3rd! Congratulations to the girls for their top efforts. Thank you to Wendy Gogel for coaching the boys for the day and to Clarry Martin for coaching the girls games, your help on the day was very much appreciated. Miss Bailey

Keith Theatre Group—Disco Inferno! Keith Theatre Group is made up of more than 30 dedicated local volunteers ranging in age from 14 to “somewhere in their 60s” who come together each year simply for the love of live performance. We actively encourage participation from our young people, and Keith Area School students always make such a positive impact in our organisation. This year’s performance was open to the whole community, with the only criteria for involvement being a willingness to commit to the twelve-week rehearsal process. Enthusiasm and dedication is valued above all else, so anyone with a desire to get involved was welcomed aboard. This year’s show Disco Inferno, based on the German legend of Faust where a young man sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge, fame and fortune, reimagined this classic tale in a London disco, circa 1976. Our cast and crew consisted of eleven secondary students and six staff from our school, along side over twenty other community members. KAS students and staff sizzled on and off stage, and delighted audiences with their skill, energy and talent. Tanya Allen
