FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome back from our recent school holidays. I trust everyone has come back refreshed and ready for the busy term ahead. There is already lots on the go and a lot more planned. NAPLAN Good luck to our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students over the next 9 days as they participate in NAPLAN testing. Our school has been selected this year to participate in the NAPLAN online tests which is a first for NAPLAN since its inception in 2008. With the exception of the Year 3 writing component, all aspects of the NAPLAN will be completed within a secure, online testing environment. This will be a bit of a change for our students who are used to the pencil/paper method but I'm confident they'll adapt well. I'm sure all students will do their very best and have a good go at all the questions and be extra resilient with the tricky ones. I'm sure they will be brilliant. NAPLAN as you know is only one of the tools we use to use to assess student progress in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. We use a range of tools to inform us about student needs, progress and the next set of teaching moments needed to progress. Thanks IGA A big thanks and shout out to our local IGA for their generosity by including our school in the IGA Community Chest program. When specific products with the Community Chest logo are purchased at our local IGA a percentage is credited to the store’s IGA Community Chest account which is then used to support the local community. Over the years our IGA have supported a number of worthy causes and local groups. We're very appreciative of their donation of $656 which we will put towards garden bed improvements in our Ag area. 2018 Public Education Awards Nominate, celebrate and recognise an outstanding educator in the 2018 Public Education Awards. Get involved and say thank you to a leader, teacher or support staff member making a significant difference to the lives of their students and their communities. An educator’s influence continues beyond the classroom and supports children and young people to reach their full potential in life. We all remember a teacher who inspired and motivated us to enjoy learning, and the awards honour the dedication and passion of individuals who deliver the best possible outcomes for young people and their families. The Public Education Awards are entering their 8th year and we’re excited to share excellence in South Australian public education and invite you to celebrate and recognise an educator who makes a positive impact every day. The Public Education Awards recognise excellence in South Australian public education, and nominations are open 1 to 31 May. From the Leadership team

From the Secondary Assistant Principal—Mr Ben Lamont As always Term 1 was very busy with many various sporting events and other extra curricular activities taking up much of our time. It was great to see the students getting involved in these, while maintaining high standards around their learning. One highlight was Joe Watts winning this year's Lions Youth of the Year. Unfortunately Joe did not progress past the regional stage, but he represented the school with distinction and we are very proud of him. Along with Joe, there are a few other special mentions to those who helped out throughout last term. A huge thank you to Paul Makin and Liz Rowsell who went to Canberra with the year 7 and 8s in week 11. This is a massive effort, and for them to volunteer their time to help support the school and all the students was amazing. Also well done to Mr. Wade, Miss Bailey and Miss Weyland for coordinating this camp. Another special thank you to Mark Llewellyn who went with Miss Gillet, Mrs Vickery and Chloe Flint to Murray Bridge for 3 days to help support our year 9 aquatics camp. It certainly looked like a lot of fun! Thank you to all the parents who came along to Teacher/Parent/Student conferences in week 7 and week 10. It is great to see so many dedicated parents getting involved in their child's learning and we hope to see even more of you next time around. University Expo In week 6 this term, Uni SA and Flinders Uni are coming to the school to spend time with our year 10 – 12 students. They will be offering a range of programs to help students start exploring future career options. As part of this process, they will be holding a parent information evening on Tuesday June 5 th at 6:30pm, here at the school. Invites will be sent out to all parents of year 10 – 12 students; however, if you have children in younger year levels and would still like to attend, please contact me here at the school at [email protected] or by phone (08) 87551177 and this can be arranged. Other Term 2 events Although Term 1 is often considered the busy term, we also have a number of events happening in Term 2. Look out for the following events on the calendar as the term progresses:  8/9 and Open boys knockout Football Cross Country NAPLAN Pupil Free Day in week 7 Upper South East Ultimate Frisbee Year 11 and 12 exams Year 11 Work experience Lastly, as you may well be aware I will be having some time off this term due to the pending birth of our first child. I just want to say thank you to everyone in the community for your support of Erika and myself. We have been overwhelmed with your kindness and generosity and we are very excited! I will continue to help support the school and all the secondary students through this time and I am sure we can make term 2 even more successful than term 1.

KAS On Loan Clothes Do you have any KAS ON LOAN clothes? We would really appreciate any items of clothing labelled ‘KAS ON LOAN’ to be washed and returned to the Hive as soon as possible. We’re happy to help kids out with something to keep them warm and dry for the rest of the day, but we need it back asap so we can do it all again for someone else. We would also really appreciate any donations of Size 6, 8 or 10 school uniform tops or bottoms that your child may have outgrown. Many thanks.

Save the Date—Smiles All Round Are you a parent of a Pre-Teen, Tweenager or Teenager? Workshop on Resilience, Managing Stress & Anxiety with your adolescent by Lana-Joy Durik, Psychologist and Director of Smiles All Round Keith Area School, Wednesday June 20th at 7pm More details soon.

Student Spotlight—Max Kamp! During the Easter holidays I went to Sydney. I competed at the Royal Easter Sydney Show in the Australian Whip Cracking National Titles. I had qualified to do this by competing earlier in the year at the Victorian State Titles and the New South Wales State Titles. I had a very successful day. The competition is marked on four components. 10 tricks that I choose, accuracy where you cut polystyrene cups in half with your whips, and a freestyle routine which goes for half a minute, you are also awarded points for your dress, your presentation and the amount of entertainment that you provide. After a long day and all the scores were added up I came first. Which means I am the Australian Juvenile Whip Cracking Champion in the age group of 12 and under. I was very lucky to have help in funding my trip through busking in the Southeast and several generous donations. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Keith Area School Governing Council for their generous donation to help me with my travels. Max Kamp.

Red Cross Pillowcase Project On Tuesday 1 May Glenny Hunt came in to teach our year 3/4/5 classes about the Red Cross Pillowcase project. The project involves engaging discussions and interactive activities to help students:  Understand and discuss the importance of being prepared  Prepare their mind for the thoughts and feelings that may arise before, during and after an emergency  Know the difference between need and want items and what to pack in an emergency kit Each student is then given a pillowcase to decorate and take home, to start their own personal emergency kit.

Pastoral Care Worker—Chloe Flint I have really enjoyed the start to this year! During Term 1 I had the privilege of meeting many of you at the Lions Club Youth of the Year, iNight and school assembly. Your ongoing support of this role is greatly appreciated. Aside from visiting various classrooms throughout last term, the Outreach to Schools Group and the Tatiara Ministers Association arranged for ‘Life Matters’ to come down from Adelaide to present their ‘All for One, One for All’ Easter Story here at Keith. The day went really well. Thank you to everyone involved for your help, support and participation along the way. Another highlight from last term was the Year 9 Aquatics camp. It was also a lot of fun and particularly great to see everyone participate and have a go at all the activities, especially the ones that some of the students have never tried before. Well done to all the Year 9s for their cooperation, team work and encouragement of one another throughout the camp! Brekky Club started back up during Term 1 and continues to be a big hit this term. It is available to all students from Foundation – Year 12s, which makes it a great way for our team of volunteers to interact with a wide age range. We are looking for some extra volunteers to help us continue running Brekky Club. If you are interested or available, please ring me (Chloe Flint) via the school. I am available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and would love to hear from you to run through the process. I look forward to this term, it looks like it will be another great one! Miss Chloe Flint Pastoral Care Worker

Year 9 Aquatics Camp Last Term in Week 10, the Year 9 class went to Murray Bridge for a 3 day Aquatics Camp. What an action-packed camp it was! Students participated in kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, small boat handling, kneeboarding, water-skiing, rowing, and windsurfing. They sailed catamarans and some students had the chance to try single water-skiing and wakeboarding! The weather was beautiful (if a little warm!) and there was plenty of time in the afternoons for some footy, fishing and Frisbee throwing. On our first night, students had the chance to show off their cooking skills on Trangias. There were some great dishes, including chicken stir fry and burritos. After dinner on the first night, we all went bowling and the second night we watched a movie. We celebrated Raff’s birthday on Tuesday and played a prank on Eli (you’ll have to ask him about that though!). All students had a wonderful time, Miss Gillett particularly liked watching all of the stacks! A big thank you to all the teachers and instructors involved in making the camp possible, and a big thank you to the students! You were all very well behaved and represented the school with pride. Miss Ellen Gillett Year 9 Homegroup Teacher

“What ANZAC Day means to me” During Term 1, Mrs Lamont and Miss Weyland’s classes investigated the meaning of ANZAC Day and then all completed a writing piece on ‘What it means to me’. Well done to Sara Rowsell who was willing to read her work out at the ANZAC Day breakfast. She spoke with confidence and expressed her feelings of ANZAC Day to a large audience. Thank you to Frank Mugg who made a generous donation to Sara for sharing her writing with the community. Mrs Erika Lamont

Year 6/7 Tree Planting & Latitude excursion With most of the year 7’s off to Canberra in Week 11, the remaining students from Mrs Lamont and Miss Weyland’s classes had a busy week back in Keith. Monday saw the students visit the Kindy and do some finger painting. On Tuesday, they ventured to the Menz farm to plant some trees to help with the Sherwood Bushfire Recovery. The students worked hard all morning to plant over 100 trees on the property. A big thank you to Sophie Campbell, Bruce Loller, Cathy Hutchings, Sherryn Bunnett, Cassandra Rockett and Ashleigh Davis for transporting and supervising students. Also thank you to Trish Menz for organising all the plants and setting us up for a morning of community service.

On Thursday it was time for a bit of fun with a trip to Latitude in Adelaide. We are very grateful to Paul Ruchs, Jill Wood and Sal Hedges who kindly drove us to the big smoke for a couple of hours of bouncing and climbing. It was great day enjoyed by all, with students (and adults) pushing their limits and overcoming fears on the rock climbing walls, flipping into giant pillows and taking on their peers on the gladiator wall.
