Marlow have had a mixed start to the season, and currently hold a mid-table spot with nine points from their opening seven fixtures; they started the campaign with early wins against Arlesey, Hayes & Yeading and Hartley Wintney, but have slipped off the pace a little in their past few outings. Tuesday’s evening’s visit from Ashford Town turned out to be a real shock for us all; despite playing some decent football in spells, the young Northwood side were made to pay for their inexperience, being undone time and again by mistakes in midfield, defence and in goal, which were ruthlessly punished by the visitors, who it must be said were magnanimous in victory. Following this afternoon’s match, we are back at Chestnut Avenue against next Saturday when we take on Bostik League Division One North side Maldon & Tiptree in an F.A. Trophy preliminary round tie; it should be an interesting game, so don’t miss it! There has generally been a good response to our innovation this season of publishing the matchday programme online, and there have certainly been more downloads of it than we previously sold copies – and without the cost of printing. Download figures to date have been: Moneyfields 134, Hayes & Yeading 103, Egham 127 and Ashford 91 – generally higher numbers than the attendance figures! Many thanks for your support, and we hope to see you here again very soon!

y notes today are rather brief, as I am currently dealing with the Local Authority and the Police following what can only be described as an arson attack on our turnstile area of the club and container in the ground.

This is following issues with individuals earlier in the week, of which the Police are aware. As I seem to be the only one here dealing with any issues, my day will be taken up with this. More from me next time.

EVO-STIK LEAGUE, SOUTH

ROUND-UP SATURDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER

MANAGER

SIMON LANE

G

ood afternoon and welcome to Northwood Park for today’s visit of Marlow FC.

We find ourselves approaching today’s game after a chastening heavy defeat this week against in form Ashford Town. We met a ruthless side who punished pretty much every single mistake with a goal, and who displayed a quality of finishing rarely seen at this level. For our part, since the excellent Harry Voss’s unfortunate departure through a freak injury, we have struggled to replace him with anything like the same standard of goalkeeper. Unfortunately there are multiple reasons for this but the problem was cruelly in evidence this week, with confidence killing performances from the incumbent custodian. We actually played some excellent quality football regularly throughout the whole game, only to make schoolboy individual errors

that has ensured at least a couple of sleepless nights for myself and the players. Going down to 10 men again also clearly didn’t help our cause. I unreservedly apologise to all at the club on behalf of the players and staff for the result on Tuesday. They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and I will be doing all I can to pass on my own strength of character to these young guys to spin this particular period around for this football club. I am extremely positive for the future of this young squad, provided the lessons from games such as against Ashford Town can be taken on board. Up the Woods!

TUESDAY 17TH OCTOBER Bedford Town v Hartley Wintney Hanwell Town v Cambridge City Marlow v AFC Rushden & Diamonds

Moneyfields maintained their unbeaten start to the season, but were made to battle for a point at Hayes & Yeading United on Tuesday night. They trailed to goals from Manny Duku in the 15th and 34th minutes, Steve Hutchings reduced the deficit 10 minutes after the restart and then Brett Poate equalised with what is becoming a trademark free-kick. Fellow new boys Hartley Wintney are second after they won 2-1 at the Runnymede Stadium against Egham Town. Paul Hodges gave the visitors a 19th minute lead that he doubled 8 minutes into the second half. Brendan Matthew replied for the Sarnies, but it wasn`t until the 88th minute. Kempton Rovers were comfortable 4-0 Hillgrounds winners against Aylesbury United. Jake Newman bagged a quickfire brace after the break following a goalless first half and then goals in the final 7 minutes from Sam Johnson and Nathan Tshikuna wrapped up victory for the Walnut Boys. Fleet Town hammered Uxbridge 6-0 to earn their first three points. Hero of the night was Farnborough loanee Pat Ruzicka, who netted a second half hat-trick. Sam Pekun and Matt Bunyan had given Fleet a 2-0 lead at the break, Ruzicka then bagged his first two on the hourmark and then 7 minutes later from the penalty spot, although he missed a chance to complete his hattrick when Paul McCarthy saved his second spotkick. Josh Baines scored another spot-kick and he completed his hat-trick with a third in the 87th minute.

TEN YEARS AFTER through to 17-year-old Elliott Buchanan and he created a bit of space for himself before curling a 25-yard strike beyond the reach of goalkeeper Tony Kessell for a fine goal and his first of the season. Dartford looked for a response and started causing some problems with high balls into the box. Liam Watson made a fine instinctive save to deny Jay May but on 35 minutes the visitors levelled when a similar move ended with Eddie McClements fired home from close-range. It was part of a spell where the Woods defence looked particularly shaky and Dartford dominated up to half-time with May spurning a great chance to put his side in front.

WELCOME TO

MARLOW

I

t was on November 22nd 1870 at the Compleat Angler Hotel on the banks of the Thames that Great Marlow Football Club was formed, and so began the history of one of the oldest clubs in the country. In the last century the club was a major force in the game and, as one of the original entrants in the first F.A Cup competition in 1871/72, contributed a share of the £25 that bought the first trophy. Marlow have the unique distinction of being the only club to have applied for entry to every competition since its inception although they were unable to compete once earlier this century. In 1882 they reached the semi-finals where they lost out to eventual winners Old Etonians 0-5 at the Oval. An Amateur Cup semi-final and a host of Berks & Bucks Senior Cup wins were among many honours won in this golden age.

In 1919 a worsening financial situation resulted in the need to play in a more local competition than the Great Western Suburban League and Marlow joined the Reading and District League. The picturesque grandstand dates from 1930’s was built to celebrate the club’s revival and the Spartan League Division Two championship. Apart from a war-time break Marlow continued in the Spartan League up to 1965, when entry was gained to the Athenian League Division

6

Northwood v Marlow

Two. Promotion to Division One was secured in season 1970/71. Here Marlow remained until 1984 when they joined the Isthmian League. Having finished bottom of Division Two in 1985 the appointment of Mike Keen as Manager heralded a rapid rise in status. Promotion to Division One came the very next season and then after just one season in Division One the championship was won after a two horse race with Grays Athletic, and along with it promotion to the Premier Division.

In 1991–92 the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1892, but lost 6–0 to West Bromwich Albion. The following season Marlow reached the third round of the FA Cup. They were drawn at home

However, they had to wait just five minutes after the restart to take the lead when a goalmouth scramble ended as Brendon Cass knocked the ball home to make it 2-1 to the Darts. The Woods needed to up their game of they were to get back into it and as they still looked vulnerable to the high ball, a change was made with Bradley Hewitt coming on for Lee Holland with Jazz Rose moving to right-back. It had a good effect at the back and coincided with another spectacular strike that got them back on level terms. The Darts defence failed to clear a Buchanan corner and centrehalf Adam Theo latched onto the loose ball with a half-volley that arrowed into the top corner (pictured left) for his first goal for the club. The Woods were visibly lifted and began to play their best football of the afternoon with Jermaine Hamilton inches away from touching home a Matthews cross but Dartford still looked

dangerous on the break and Watson made vital saves to deny McClements and substitute Matt Bodkin. Both sides were looking for the winning goal and it came just three minutes from time. Buchanan fed substitute John Lawford and when his shot was blocked it fell to Hewitt and the young defender finished with aplomb to secure all three points for the Woods. For the Boreham Wood FA Cup tie a week later, the injury problem for Liam Watson had flared up again so there was a call up for former youth team goalkeeper Bill Fishenden and Bradley Hewitt was brought in to start the game against his former club. Unfortunately the Woods found themselves a goal down after just five minutes as Greg Morgan sped down the right and delivered a pinpoint cross which was headed home by Simon Thomas. The home side continued to dominate the firsthalf and it took Northwood quite some time to get a foothold in the game but when they did they started to create a number of chances themselves with Kyle Matthews looking most dangerous. In the second-half they the Woods lost Elliott Buchanan to an ankle injury and they shuffled things around several times in an attempt to find an equaliser. But in Noel Imber Boreham Woods had a goalkeeper who looked particularly dominant and chances were few and far between. Fishenden made a couple of good saves at the other end to keep his side in the game but in the end the one early goal proved enough and the Ryman Premier side were through to the next round. We will have more from Ten Years After in our next programme.

Alan Evans looks back at Northwood events of a decade ago PHOTOS by PAUL EVANS

T

oday we continue with our popular feature where we look back to events here at Northwood Park from exactly a decade ago. This means our first season back at Step 4 of non-League following the firstever relegation in the senior club’s history as we succumbed to the drop in our second season of Southern Premier Division football having been transferred across following two years of Isthmian Premier competition.

There had been yet another surprise from the FA during the summer. We had expected to remain in the Southern League with relegation to play alongside the likes of Hillingdon Borough and Brook House who were both in the then South & West Division of the Southern but no, the FA had other ideas once again and

of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory over big rivals Uxbridge where former boss Tony Choules was in charge of a side that included six exNorthwood players. The reward for that was an away tie at Boreham Wood, one of Northwood manager Colin Payne’s former teams. That was a couple of weeks away though and before that was the need to start picking up some league points in a Saturday home game against highly-rated Dartford who were high up in the list of promotion favourites.

It was Matthews who played a clever ball

But the start of the season had not been too spectacular with just one point from the first for matches before success in the opening round

22

Northwood v Marlow

Season 2008/09 saw the Club moved yet again into the Midland Division and another inconsistent season followed finishing with a defeat to Windsor & Eton in the final of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup at MK Dons stadium. The following two seasons saw some good results against the top sides but indifferent

costs and the loss of some key players and several local derbies, making life much more difficult than it really needed to be. In the circumstances a mid-table finish was achieved and a return to the Central Division for 2016/17 aided a finish in 4th place (on goal difference) and achieved a play-off place, but third-placed Barton Rovers running out 2-0 victors at their ground.

They had recently moved into a brand-new purpose built stadium with over 1,000 seats as they look to recover from years of nomadic existence to return to the top of the non-League Pyramid. A browse through the programme for the match reported that goalkeeper Ashley Harris, who had been at fault for two of the goals in an earlier defeat at Brentwood, had been released after Liam Watson had returned after injury. There was a change to the team as the injured Jerome Hall was replaced by Kyle Matthews who had returned to the club after a spell at Harrow Borough. There was a distinctly lowkey start to the game but that changed on 18 minutes when the Woods took a shock lead in spectacular fashion.

we found ourselves back in the arms of the Isthmian League and in Division One North with many trips round the M25 and into Essex! Our tenants Wealdstone had also been moved and would start their third and final season sharing Northwood Park with us in the Isthmian Premier where we would have loved to have stayed a couple of years earlier.

to Tottenham, but the match was switched to White Hart Lane, where they lost 5–1. Two seasons later they reached the third round again, defeating Oxford United in the first round, before losing 2–0 at Swindon Town in the third. They remained in the Premier Division until being relegated at the end of the 1994–95 season. Two seasons later they were relegated again. In 2004 they were transferred to Division One West of the Southern League, and later moved to Division One Central.

Assistant Steve Croxford took over and although performances and results improved towards the end it was not enough to avoid relegation. Season 2012/13 found Marlow in in the Uhlsport Hellenic League with a new management team headed by Mark Bartley eager to recapture some of the glories of the past and this they did, winning the league championship by a 16 point margin and scoring 123 goals in 36 games to return to the Southern League where the next two seasons saw them consolidate with finishes in and 17th and 11th positions respectively. This was an FA Cup-tie with all the right ingredients with the ten-man Woods storming to an unlikely victory at Hemel Hempstead with three goals in the final ten minutes. Hemel lead by two goals close to the break, but Andy Sherry (pictured) slotted home on 44 minutes. However, early in the second half Micky Durkin made it 3-1 to Hemel for his hat-trick. Things got worse when Paul Watkins was red-carded with 15 minutes left. But Woods weren’t beaten, and Lawrence Yaku netted to give them hope then with six minutes left Steve Hale hit the equaliser. And with ten-men Northwood looking to hang on for a replay, on 94 minutes, Hale go on the end of a Fitzgerald flick to hit the winner- 4-3! Northwood: Paul Riordan, Gavin Hart (Gary Issott), Gary Williams (Mark Buchanan), Danny Butler, Dave Sargent (Scott Fitzgerald), Dave Nolan, Andy Sherry, Steve Hale, Lawrence Yaku, Mark Hook. www.northwoodfc.com

ALAN EVANS Buildbase FA Trophy Next Saturday we start the last of our FA competitions for the season as we play in the Preliminary round of the Buildbase FA Challenge Trophy with a home game against Bostik Isthmian League Division One side Maldon & Tiptree. It will be the first meeting between the two clubs since Maldon Town merged with Tiptree United in 2010 but we did meet regularly with Maldon Town when we were both members of the Isthmian League between 2007 and 2010; six times in all with the Woods winning three, drawing twice and losing just once. Last season the Jammers had a superb season under the management of former West Ham and Manchester City midfielder Kevin Horlock but missed out on automatic promotion to Brightlingsea Regent. They enjoyed home advantage for the play-off games, first beating Haringey Borough 5-4 in an exciting tie but then losing the final just 0-1 to Thurrock. They lost ace striker Liam Nash, who bagged 34 league goals last season, to Football League side Gillingham in the summer and they have had to do a bit of rebuilding for the new campaign. They started slowly but climbed to fourteenth in the table with an impressive 5-2

success at Brentwood Town on Tuesday night and they play at home to Tilbury this afternoon. Manager Horlock, who also played 32 times for Northern Ireland, is also assistant manager of his Country’s Under-21s and Colchester United’s Under-23s. We have won our opening FA Trophy game in each of the last two seasons. Last year it was probably our best performance of the season which saw the Woods record an impressive 6-3 victory at Dorking Wanderers in the preliminary round. The Surrey side were right at the top of Division One South of the Isthmian League at the time and went on to get promotion through the play-offs so history suggests it was a real success. However, we then faced an even tougher game in the next round, away against Royston Town, who of course ran away with our own league title! We notched a creditable 2-2 draw though before losing the replay 4-1 here at Northwood Park. Prior to that we defeated Potters Bar Town in a replay in 2015 but then lost disappointingly 1-3 at home to Bedford Town. In 2014 we got one stage further defeating Waltham Abbey 3-1 and then following that with success in a penalty shoot-out against Guernsey. In the Second Qualifying round we travelled to Wimborne Town down in Dorset but went down narrowly 2-1. The Woods’ best-ever season in the FA Trophy came in 2009/10 – eight years ago – when Abingdon United, Evesham United and Basingstoke Town were all beaten before a draw at Carshalton Athletic was followed by a heavy 0-5 defeat in the First Round proper. The winners of next Saturday’s tie will be at home in the first qualifying round to either

he Woods lost their form completely as in-form Ashford Town (Middlesex) stormed to a stunning victory as an ideal warm-up for their forthcoming FA Cup tie against Leatherhead at the weekend. The visitors came storming out of the traps and quickly had the Woods rookie defensive line-up under pressure. Jack Beadle got forward well in the left and slipped a neat ball into Dan Fleming whose shot was well blocked by Robinson for a corner. From that Romario Jonas was allowed a totally free header but he powered the ball the wrong side of the post.

After just eight minutes the Woods backed off and gave Mark Bitmead too much space just outside the box and the Tangerine’s sharp-shooter took aim and fired low inside the post with McCorkell stranded. The Woods ‘keeper did save well when Fleming got his head on the end of a Jonas cross and the side tried to play their way out of trouble but they were hit on the counter-attack again on 20 minutes. A ball from Michael Buckley was intended for Tom McDonnell but he failed to control the ball and was robbed. It was quickly played across to Bitmead, once again in space and this time he picked the top corner with unerring accuracy. Northwood needed to get themselves back in the game and Meshach Williams flicked a header that flew across goal but well wide before also latching onto a long-ball with a shot that was well saved at the near-post by goalkeeper Tyler Tobin. Unfortunately, in between those efforts, Rose was adjudged to have fouled thirty yards from goal and Bitmead seized upon the opportunity to complete a first-half hat-trick with a free-kick that was floated over the wall and through the hands of the diving McCorkell. Harry Newman tested Tobin with a long-range effort just before the break but Ashford led 3-0 and there was a mountain to climb for the Woods in the second-half. No yellow cards in the first-half but suddenly it all changed as first Rose and then Ashford’s Tommy Brunton were cautioned within four minutes of the restart. Newman made some inroads down the left and knocked in a dangerous cross that wasn’t cleared and in the scramble that followed Williams had a shot blocked and then Buckley’s effort deflected and looped up into the arms of Tobin. Ashford grabbed a fourth against the run of play after 55 minutes. Evans Kouassi was robbed by Alex Fisher who broke quickly to feed Bitmead who continued his personal field day with a fourth goal. The Woods did respond quickly and with the introduction of Mahlondo Martin for Williams and a slight adjustment to the formation, they suddenly put the visitors under pressure. On the hour Robinson got forward down the left and knocked in a cross that Newman headed past Tobin for his first goal for the club. For about ten minutes, there was a few thoughts of a stirring comeback. Lewis Hobbs made a strong run from out of defence and slipped in Newman but his effort was well saved by Tobin. Then Pat Kelly attacked from the right but shot well wide. But Ashford were able to restore their four-goal advantage after 72 minutes when some defensive errors presented substitute Jabir Laraba with a simple task of scrambling the ball home from closerange. Northwood continued to show some great spirit and a long-range effort from Chingoka again brought Tobin into action as he just held on under pressure while an excellent exchange of passes between Martin and Kelly seemed to get the substitute in on goal but he delayed too long and was tackled. After 82 minutes Kelly put in another cross which saw Chingoka’s shot whistle just wide of the post. But the horror show wasn’t finished yet. After 85 minutes Rose picked up a second yellow after a tussle just outside the box to leave the defence even more short-handed for the closing stages and it showed. Laraba’s shot from distance somehow eluded defence and ‘keeper as it crept in for number six and in stoppage-time Jonas again got his head to a corner and this time made no mistake. www.northwoodfc.com

Walton Casuals or Canvey Island, both sides enjoying pretty good seasons at the moment. Canvey Island, who were relegated last season, are currently seventh in the same division as Maldon & Tiptree having lost just once in eight games while Walton Casuals, who are now playing in a brand-new stadium, are sixth in Isthmian League Division South. Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup We are not far away from also starting our final cup competition of the campaign – the Middlesex Senior Cup which the Woods won for the second time in 2016 when beating Enfield Town in the Final. This time we kick-off the Senior Cup with an away tie at AFC Hayes who were relegated from our League a couple of years ago and now play their football in the Combined Counties League. The game takes place on Tuesday 17th October 2017 with kickoff at 7.45pm. The winner of that game plays at home to Staines Town in the Second Round, then at home to one of Hanwell Town, Uxbridge or North Greenford United in the quarter-finals. Season Ticket Offer Once again the Club have made our cut-price season ticket available to all supporters for the new season. For only £40.00 you can gain access to all of the remaining League matches being played by the first-team this season, so less than £2.00 per match. There are application forms available in the clubhouse this week and if you fill it out and pass the money to us, you will get entry for today’s League fixture as part of the package. Alternatively you can order it direct by card at your leisure via the website. It will remain on offer for the next couple of months as it continues to provide value for money for some time. The price also includes admission to each of our Under-18s midweek youth league matches too. There are other benefits of the Season Ticket too. It gives you access to the Clubhouse at any time and also allows you to book it for private functions should you wish. We still have a few remaining Season Tickets available for collection from me this afternoon. Programme goes Digital ONLY If you were here for our opening home league games you will already be aware that if you are reading these notes in the programme, you are almost certainly reading it on your phone, tablet or on a PC screen as from the new season we are no longer producing a paper version. The League changed their rules this season to

state that the need to produce a programme for each match no longer had to be a printed version and for lots of reasons, we made the decision to end it. It is a change that will be strange for both Ken Green and myself as between us we have produced virtually every printed Northwood programme since Ken first started them in the 1970s. The quality of the programme should remain much the same though and to download it will now be free so savings all round. It also makes it more available to everyone. We have already had a massive increase in downloads of people reading the programme. You can either download it in a format that is easy to read or to print it out yourself at home should that be your preference. We hope you will embrace the change and enjoy it. However, we are aware that some people would prefer it to remain a printed edition and indeed, we have even received an offer from one of our loyal and regular supporters to cover the losses that the club makes when producing a printed version. So, we will consider it further over the next few weeks but please let us know what you think, either in person at a game or by email to the club email address [email protected] Under-18s – FA Youth Cup Following their excellent 5-1 defeat of Haringey Borough in the opening round of the FA Youth Cup, the Under-18s travelled to Chesham United for the First Qualifying round last Thursday night. They started at blistering pace and missed a host of chances before eventually taking the lead after just seven minutes through Femi Azeez. But just ten minutes later Chesham were level when Ollie Lawford, son of John Lawford one of the best predatory strikers of the last twenty years who played briefly for the Woods ten years ago, levelled after a defensive error. The same player then scored with a clever flick to make it 2-1 and it remained that way through to half-time. The Woods hit back on the hour when Azeez notched his second with a tap-in from close-range after a good header but Lawford completed his hat-trick almost immediately to leave the Woods behind again. But they weren’t finished yet and substitute Sam Netscher headed home an equaliser and the game went to extra-time. Kyran Worrell had a free-kick that came back off a post while Callum Bedwell’s header was cleared off the line but it was the home side that snatched the 4-3 victory with a goal on 107 minutes. It was an entertaining and competitive game and while the Woods should really have won having dominated for long spells, they can be proud of the win with ten of the starting eleven

CLUB MATTERS players still only sixteen and with another year at youth level still to come in 2018/19. However, after a glut of home games, they don’t play at Northwood again until November 2nd when they face Camberley Town in the Lucas Fettes League Cup and follow that at home in the Middlesex County Youth Cup v. either Ashford Town (Middx) or Bedfont Sports a week later. Groundshare – London Tigers FC You will have heard over the summer that we have allowed Spartan South Midlands League side London Tigers to have a one-year only groundshare arrangement here at Northwood Park this season. Their ground at Avenue Park on the Western Avenue (formerly Viking Sports) was pretty much ruined following a visit by a travelling community last season and they needed somewhere to play while they have the ground cleared and decontaminated. We had already decided to look for a new League for our reserve side after the Suburban League had involved increased travelling over the years and we have put our backing into a new Middlesex

Under-23 Development League which is now planned. That doesn’t start until next season, 2018/19, so the groundshare suits all parties and next year we will revert to the important “reserve” side that will be a stepping stone between our top youth side and senior football. Anyone with a Northwood Season Ticket can gain admission to their Spartan South Midlands League games for half-price, which will be £3.50 for adults or £3 for OAP’s. Like our own games, Under-16s are admitted free so if you can’t get along to the first-team away games then please pop along to see the Tigers. Their next fixtures here at Northwood Park are on Saturday 14th and Tuesday 17th October when they take on firstly Biggleswade FC and then Fergus Moore’s Edgware Town side. Player Sponsors As the season is still fairly new, why not work out who your favourite Northwood player is and then choose to sponsor them. Elsewhere in today’s programme you can see the full squad and only a handful of players are already sponsored. It would be great to get the page filled up as early as possible this season.

MATCH REVIEW

T

he Woods slipped to their fourth defeat in succession with this self-inflicted defeat in the Middlesex derby at rivals Uxbridge, who came from behind to notch their first home win since the opening day of the season. The Woods were slow out of the blocks and the opening stages belonged to the home side. After just three minutes former Woods midfielder James Burgess was the first to record a shot that flashed wide but soon after a ball over the top saw Dylan Kearney through on goal but though he beat McCorkell the ball was wide of the far post.

There were ten minutes on the clock when Northwood breached the Uxbridge defence for the first time as Harry Newman got in a dangerous cross and defender Dave Thomas sliced his clearance high over the bar for a corner. But it was only a brief respite and Uxbridge got their first effort on target after 20 minutes when Joe Wright hit a goalbound shot that was cleared off the line by an alert Buckley. Just three minutes later Wright got his head on the end of a Thomas cross but the ball came back off the crossbar. Northwood’s attempts to form some attacks of their own came mainly through Newman but he was brought down in full flow on two occasions, earning yellow cards for both Ben Peden and debut defender Sam Aggrey-Adam with free-kicks coming to nothing. Meanwhile Uxbridge were still putting the Woods defence under pressure with McCorkell saving well from a Matt Sinclair effort and then a mazy dribble from Rhys Rabess saw him beat two defenders but shoot over the bar. The half came to an end after a similar run from NoyanTajbakhsh got him into the box and this time McCorkell did well to save with his legs. The Woods coaching staff must have got their points across well at half-time because their side looked a different prospect after the break. They attacked down the hill in much more organised fashion and were quickly on top. The opening goal came on 48 minutes as Evans Kouassi sped down the right past his marker and knocked in a perfect cross to the near-post where Meshach Williams headed powerfully past Paul McCarthy. Northwood should have doubled that lead eight minutes later as Newman did well on the left and Tom McDonnell played the ball off to Tayshan Hayden-Smith who shot over the bar with just the ‘keeper to beat. Two minutes later Newman and McDonnell combined well again with the ball running loose to Kouassi whose powerful shot was well blocked by Burgess. After 61 minutes a good run from Pat Kelly set up Williams for a good shot on the turn that flew over the top and Uxbridge changed things around by bringing on experienced striker Anthony Thomas for the tiring Wright who was just coming back from injury. Williams gave away a free-kick and picked up a booking for a clumsy challenge after 74 minutes and it was from Sinclair’s excellent delivery towards the near-post that Dave Thomas met with a deft flick which left McCorkell flatfooted and levelled the scores. It was Uxbridge who were pressing more for the winner in the closing stages. A long cross pumped in by Luke Warner-Eley saw Kearney’s header directed straight at McCorkell while Anthony Thomas picked up another yellow for the home side after hacking down Jack McDonnell. After Kearney had worked the ball across goal, Warner-Eley then let fly with a good strike from distance which wasn’t far wide but time was running out when McCorkell made a good save from a Sinclair shot on 86 minutes. As the Woods ‘keeper lay on the ground, Kearney followed in and appeared to make minimal contact with his boot but inexplicably McCorkell reacted badly as he recovered his feet and swung his arm at the striker. The result was a penalty followed by a red card and with Buckley donning the green shirt and keepers gloves to make his debut more memorable, he could do nothing to stop Anthony Thomas from scoring from the spot and putting Uxbridge in front. Despite six minutes of added time, the ten-men could do nothing to try to rescue the point as the home side managed the game through to the finish and the Woods were left pointless.
