PRIMER: NO. 16 KENTUCKY AT NO. 24 LOUISVILLE The No. 16 University of Kentucky volleyball team travels to in-state rival Louisville for a mid-week matchup Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center. The Wildcats concluded their six-match season-opening homestand by going 2-1 at the Commonwealth Classic. UK earned wins over Northern Iowa and Creighton, and suffered its first loss of the season to No. 6 Southern Cal. Senior Jackie Napper and junior Shelby Workman earned All-Tournament Team honors. Kentucky owns a 26-25 edge in the all-time series against its in-state rivals after a 3-2 victory in Lexington last season. The Wildcats have won three of the last four contests and the two teams are an even 3-3 in Craig Skinner’s 10 years as UK head coach. UK is looking for its first win at U of L since 1993. Tuesday’s match will be a homecoming for Napper, a Louisville native. In the second match of the season, Napper became the 13th player in school history to total 1,000 career digs. She has led UK in digs five times this season, including four match-high totals. Workman, who has led UK in kills in each of the last four matches, has notched 10 or more kills in each contest, setting a career-long streak of 10 or more kills in a match. In UK’s win over Northern Iowa, she posted a career-high 18 kills, followed by 13 against USC and 12 against Creighton, all match-high totals. Live stats from Tuesday’s contest in Louisville can be found at UKathletics.com, while a live video stream will be available on GoCards.com. THE MARCH TO 210: THREE WINS AWAY Tenth-year head coach Craig Skinner is three wins shy of becoming the program’s all-time winningest coach. With 207 victories, he is second on UK’s all-time wins list, four behind Kathy DeBoer, who tallied 209 in nine seasons from 1984-92. - Skinner won his 200th career match in a 3-0 win at Ole Miss on Nov. 17, 2013 - Skinner’s 200th career win was also UK’s 20th of the 2013 campaign, which marked the third consecutive 20-win season and sixth in the past seven years - Kentucky has totaled 17 or more victories in all nine seasons of Skinner’s tenure, setting a program record for consecutive 17-win seasons, previously set from 1977-84 and again from 1987-93 RECORD WATCHING - Head Coach Craig Skinner, with 207 career victories, is three shy of becoming UK’s all-time winningest coach - Senior Jackie Napper has 1,083 career digs, fourth in the UK record books in the rally scoring era and ninth in the all-time top 10, four away from the top eight. - Senior Lauren O’Conner, who leads all current SEC players with 878 kills, is 122 shy of becoming the 15th Wildcat to notch 1,000 career kills - Junior Morgan Bergren is third all-time in the rally scoring era in UK history with 1,581 career assists

SCOUTING LOUISVILLE In its first season in the ACC, Louisville is 3-2 on the season after going 2-1 at the Active Ankle Challenge, hosted by U of L. The Cardinals swept Tennessee State and Cincinnati before a 3-1 loss to Appalachian State. Louisville’s signature win came at the ACC/B1G Challenge, where the Cardinals downed No. 12 Minnesota, 3-1, in Minneapolis. Maya McClendon leads U of L with 57 kills for a 3.35 kills per set rate on .209 hitting to go along with 54 digs and nine blocks. Katie George has a team-best 49 digs and 193 assists with 15 kills, while Tess Clark’s .479 hitting and 16 blocks leads the team. McClendon and George were named to the All-Active Ankle Challenge All-Tournament Team. Anne Kordes is in her fourth season as head coach of the Cardinals and owns an 80-23 record. Louisville went 23-8 in 2013 and captured the American Athletic Conference championship in its only season in the league. KENTUCKY-LOUISVILLE SERIES HISTORY Kentucky owns a 26-25 edge in the all-time series, dating back to the first meeting in 1977. The Wildcats have won three of the last four, including a 3-2 victory in 2013. UK is 11-13 all-time against U of L in Louisville, but winless on the road since 1993. In the Craig Skinner era, each team has won three contests, all since the series resumed on an annual basis in 2009 after three seasons off. Last season in Memorial Coliseum, Kentucky won a five-set thriller (17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11). Anni Thomasson led UK with a team-high-tying 13 kills and a team best 16 digs, both career highs at the time for the outside hitter. Alexandra Morgan also contributed 13 kills and a team-best .407 hitting clip, while Shelby Workman added 11 kills. A then career best 51 assists from Morgan Bergren was a match high. On the defensive side, Morgan had five blocks to lead the Wildcats. UP NEXT: AT CAROLINA CLASSIC Kentucky stays on the road and travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the Carolina Classic, Sept. 12-13. The Wildcats will face No. 17 North Carolina in the opener Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET, followed by VCU and Georgia Southern Saturday at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively. LAST WEEK: UK CONCLUDES HOMESTAND AT COMMONWEALTH CLASSIC Kentucky concluded a six-match homestand by going 2-1 at the Commonwealth Classic. UK earned wins over Northern Iowa and Creighton, and suffered its first loss of the season to No. 6 Southern Cal. Senior Jackie Napper and Junior Shelby Workman were named to the All-Tournament Team. Workman led UK in kills in all three matches and has a career-long streak of 10 or more kills in four-straight matches. In a win over Northern Iowa, she posted a career-high 18 kills in the win. Napper led UK with 59 digs in the three matches. The libero averaged 5.90 digs per set and registered 20 or more digs in two matches. Napper picked up 23 digs in a win over the Panthers – one shy of matching a career-high. She followed that with a career-best total in a three-set match with 20 digs vs. No. 6 Southern Cal. In a three-set win over Creighton she picked up 16 digs and added an ace. NAPPER THE LATEST MEMBER OF THE 1,000 CLUB With 45 digs in the season’s opening weekend, senior libero Jackie Napper topped the 1,000-dig plateau for her career. Now with 1,083 digs in her career, Napper is the 13th player in school history to amass 1,000 digs and sits ninth in the all-time UK record books and third in the 25-point rally scoring era. She totaled 10 or more digs in all six matches and has posted 10 or more in a match on 50 occasions in her career. MAKING QUICK WORK The Wildcats have earned three 3-0 victories this season in their first six matches, with two in the opening weekend before a sweep of Creighton to cap the homestand. Last season, Kentucky posted 15 victories by a 3-0 margin a season ago. The 15 sweeps were fueled by a seven-match winning streak, where UK posted five 3-0 wins. The streak included a run in which Kentucky recorded victories in 19 of 20 sets. After claiming the fifth frame in their upset win over No. 4 Minnesota, only Alabama was able to win a set against the Wildcats. MEMORIAL MAGIC Memorial Coliseum has been the home of the Wildcats for all 38 volleyball seasons, and the historic venue has provided the Wildcats with a home court advantage unlike any other. Last year, Kentucky went 14-4 at home. The record included a 7-2 mark in SEC contests, a 3-2 upset win over then-No. 4 and undefeated Minnesota and a five-set win over in-state rival Louisville. TOUGH NON-CONFERENCE SLATE Among teams ranked in the AVCA Preseason Top 25, UK faces the second-toughest strength of schedule, based on the 2013 winning percentage of teams’ non-conference opponents. Kentucky’s non-conference foes went 324-104 in 2013, and seven made the NCAA Tournament, headlined by USC’s trip to the Regional Finals.

SEC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

RANKED IN THE PRESEASON, AGAIN At 19th in the preseason top-25, UK is ranked in the AVCA Preseason Coaches’ Poll for a program-record third consecutive year. It is the fifth time in six years Kentucky has earned a place in the preseason poll, all under head coach Craig Skinner. Before 2009, Kentucky’s first preseason ranking under Skinner, UK had been ranked in the preseason just three times dating back to 1982. - Skinner’s Wildcats have been ranked in the preseason, weekly or final poll 61 times by the AVCA - In 2013, Kentucky debuted at No. 17 and was ranked in the top 25 every week for the seventh time in program history. - UK will face five teams ranked in the preseason poll: No. 5 Southern California, No. 10 Florida, No. 15 Missouri, No. 20 North Carolina and No. 23 Creighton. UK will face USC, UF, Mizzou and CU all at home in Memorial Coliseum. SUMMER BEGAN WITH CHINA TRIP At the beginning of the summer, the Kentucky volleyball team and staff went on a two-week trip to China, where they combined competition, education and culture into a oncein-a-lifetime experience. The Wildcats visited five cities, played seven matches against some of the elite Chinese professional teams and went on an educational journey along the way. The team visited historical sites and landmarks and took a class that began a week before they left and continued in China. For the student-athletes, the trip was not only an opportunity to bond with their teammates and get better on the court in preparation for the 2014 season, it was a chance to experience an entirely different culture and lifestyle and get out of their comfort zones. PRESEASON ALL-SEC HONORS Junior Morgan Bergren was named to the Preseason All-SEC team, as voted upon by the league’s head coaches. Bergren started all 31 matches for the Wildcats in 2013 and ranked fourth in the SEC with 1,215 assists. She was second on the team with 24 service aces to go along with 192 digs, 130 kills and 77 blocks. This summer, she traveled to Beijing, China, to compete with USA Volleyball on the U.S. Collegiate National Team. UK was also voted to finish second in the

LUCKY THIRTEEN UK is one of just 13 teams in the country to appear in each of the last nine NCAA Tournaments. UK joins the following schools in achieving that feat: California, Colorado State, Florida, Hawaii, Louisville, Minnesota, Nebraska, Penn State, Southern California, Stanford, Texas and Washington. CLUB ROOF UK has totaled 39 blocks for a 1.95 blocks per set rate. Kentucky has out-blocked its opponent in four matches, with wins in each contest. Head Coach Craig Skinner Since being tabbed Kentucky’s head coach in December 2004, Craig Skinner has rejuvenated the Kentucky volleyball program into a national prominence once again. Skinner has directed the Wildcats to NINE consecutive NCAA Tournaments - a feat only 12 other schools in the nation have achieved. That run includes THREE Sweet Sixteen appearances in the last five seasons. Furthermore, the Wildcats have captured 17 or more victories in all NINE seasons under Skinner’s direction, including tallying 20 or more wins in SIX of the last SEVEN, including 2013. He became the fastest coach in school allure to total 100 career victories in just his fifth season, and is the only coach in program history to advance to postseason play in each season at the helm.
