BERGREN, NAPPER NAMED SEC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Junior setter Morgan Bergren was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week and senior libero Jackie Napper earned Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 6. Napper earned SEC defensive honors for the third time in the last four weeks, while Bergren was named Player of the Week for the first time in her career. The duo helped guide UK to wins over Alabama and then-No. 21 Texas A&M, teams that entered the weekend with a combined 23-5 (.821) record. Bergren directed the Wildcats to a .306 attacking percentage for the weekend with six players averaging 1.29 kills per set or better. Bergren had 43 or more assists in both victories and added 11 on a blistering .579 attacking percentage. She did not commit a single error in 19 attacking attempts. UK posted 54 kills in the win over Texas A&M which marked a three-set record in the 25-point rally scoring era. For the week, Bergren assisted on an average of 13 of UK’s 16.70 kills per set. Napper averaged 4.43 digs per set in the two matches and logged 15 or more digs in each contest. In addition to leading the UK defense, Napper contributed offensively with 10 assists in the two matches – including a season-high six against the Aggies. NAPPER REPEATS AS SEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior libero Jackie Napper has earned three of the past four Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors and is in the midst of a record-setting campaign. Napper has charted 10 or more digs in all but three matches this season. The Louisville, Ky., native has posted 298 digs in 2014 and has moved into fourth place all-time in UK career records books for digs with 1,277. She’s currently averaging a career-high 4.58 digs per set and has logged 15 or more digs in 13 matches this season. Napper earned her first career Defensive Player of the Week honor on Sept. 15 after an 80-dig, 15-assist week. She averaged 5.00 digs per set and posted match-high dig totals in each contest, including a career-best 26 at Louisville and another 26 three days later at No. 17 North Carolina. Napper is the first Wildcat to repeat as Defensive Player of the Week since Stephanie Klefot achieved the feat Sept. 6 and Sept. 12, 2011. LETS PLAY FOUR The Wildcats are a perfect 9-0 in four-set matches in 2014, including six of the last seven contests. Kentucky is 11-5 in the first set and 10-6 in the second, but UK has rebounded to go 14-2 in the third set and 9-1 in the fourth frame. The Wildcats’ lone loss in the fourth set came at No. 17 North Carolina. UK is 5-1 in three-set matches and 0-1 in its lone match to go the distance. SKINNER ATOP THE RECORD BOOKS With UK’s win over Georgia Southern on Sept. 13, tenth-year head coach Craig Skinner won his 201th match at Kentucky to become the program’s all-time winningest coach. With a 218-87 record, he has passed Kathy DeBoer, who went 209-92 in nine seasons from 1984-92. - Skinner won his 200th career match in a 3-0 win at Ole Miss on Nov. 17, 2013 - UK’s 20th win of the 2013 campaign marked the third consecutive 20-win season and sixth in the past seven years, all under Skinner - Kentucky has totaled 17 or more victories in all nine seasons of Skinner’s tenure, setting a program record for consecutive 17-win seasons, previously set from 1977-84 and again from 1987-93. NONCONFERENCE SEASON IN REVIEW Kentucky notched a 10-2 record in nonconference action, highlighted by a 7-1 mark at home and a 3-2 win at Louisville, its first victory at U of L since 1993. UK’s lone defeats came to No. 6 Southern California and at No. 17 North Carolina. The Wildcats opened the season with 3-0 wins over Wichita State and Butler before a 3-1 victory over Virginia Tech to claim the Bluegrass Battle crown. UK then hosted the Commonwealth Classic and went 2-1 the following weekend before a 2-1 showing at the Carolina Classic. UK’s win at Louisville came in record-setting fashion, its first win at U of L in the Craig Skinner era. Junior Shelby Workman erupted for a career-high 21 kills on .348 hitting, highlighted by a program-record 13 kills in the third set. Senior Jackie Napper, a Louisville native, added a career-best 26 digs while junior Morgan Bergren had 55 assists, the most in a four-set match in UK history in the 25-point rally scoring era. Kentucky’s 67 kills also was a modern-era school record. Kentucky closes out nonconference play Nov. 3 at home vs. Morehead State.

A SET FOR THE RECORD BOOKS In UK’s 3-1 win at Louisville on Sept. 9, junior Shelby Workman erupted for 13 of her career-high 21 kills in the third set. The 13 kills in a frame is a program record in the 25-point rally scoring era. Workman’s 21-kill outing was fueled by a career-best .348 hitting percentage, and she turned in the first double-double of her career by chipping in with 12 digs. TOUGH NON-CONFERENCE SLATE Among teams ranked in the AVCA Preseason Top 25, UK faces the second-toughest strength of schedule, based on the 2013 winning percentage of teams’ non-conference opponents. Kentucky’s non-conference foes went 324-104 in 2013, and seven made the NCAA Tournament, headlined by USC’s trip to the Regional Finals. RANKED IN THE PRESEASON, AGAIN At 19th in the preseason top-25, UK is ranked in the AVCA Preseason Coaches’ Poll for a program-record third consecutive year. It is the fifth time in six years Kentucky has earned a place in the preseason poll, all under head coach Craig Skinner. Before 2009, Kentucky’s first preseason ranking under Skinner, UK had been ranked in the preseason just three times dating back to 1982. - Skinner’s Wildcats have been ranked in the preseason, weekly or final poll 61 times by the AVCA - In 2013, Kentucky debuted at No. 17 and was ranked in the top 25 every week for the seventh time in program history. - UK will face five teams ranked in the preseason poll: No. 5 Southern California, No. 10 Florida, No. 15 Missouri, No. 20 North Carolina and No. 23 Creighton. UK will face USC, UF, Mizzou and CU all at home in Memorial Coliseum. SUMMER BEGAN WITH CHINA TRIP At the beginning of the summer, the Kentucky volleyball team and staff went on a two-week trip to China, where they combined competition, education and culture into a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Wildcats visited five cities, played seven matches against some of the elite Chinese professional teams and went on an educational journey along the way. The team visited historical sites and landmarks and took a class that began a week before they left and continued in China. For the student-athletes, the trip was not only an opportunity to bond with their teammates and get better on the court in preparation for the 2014 season, it was a chance to experience an entirely different culture and lifestyle and get out of their comfort zones. PRESEASON ALL-SEC HONORS Junior Morgan Bergren was named to the Preseason All-SEC team, as voted upon by the league’s head coaches. Bergren started all 31 matches for the Wildcats in 2013 and ranked fourth in the SEC with 1,215 assists. She was second on the team with 24 service aces to go along with 192 digs, 130 kills and 77 blocks. This summer, she traveled to Beijing, China, to compete with USA Volleyball on the U.S. Collegiate National Team. UK was also voted to finish second in the SEC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. LUCKY THIRTEEN UK is one of just 13 teams in the country to appear in each of the last nine NCAA Tournaments. UK joins the following schools in achieving that feat: California, Colorado State, Florida, Hawaii, Louisville, Minnesota, Nebraska, Penn State, Southern California, Stanford, Texas and Washington.

Head Coach Craig Skinner Since being tabbed Kentucky’s head coach in December 2004, Craig Skinner has rejuvenated the Kentucky volleyball program into a national prominence once again. Skinner has directed the Wildcats to NINE consecutive NCAA Tournaments - a feat only 12 other schools in the nation have achieved. That run includes THREE Sweet Sixteen appearances in the last five seasons. Furthermore, the Wildcats have captured 17 or more victories in all NINE seasons under Skinner’s direction, including tallying 20 or more wins in SIX of the last SEVEN, including 2013. He became the fastest coach in school allure to total 100 career victories in just his fifth season, and is the only coach in program history to advance to postseason play in each season at the helm.

The Wildcats have enjoyed unprecedented success which has included a school-record run of 31 consecutive weeks ranked in the top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, record-breaking attendance marks and a six time host of NCAA Tournament play including serving as one of four host sites for the 2011 and 2013 NCAA Regionals.
