March 2017 Project Performance Update

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are an important part of OPG’s strategy to ensure our commitments are met, evaluate performance against plan and guide our decision-making regarding any necessary course adjustments. Canada’s largest clean energy project – the Darlington Nuclear Refurbishment – remains on schedule and on budget, as workers have now safely and successfully separated Unit 2 from the rest of the generating station. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has completed the first of four substantial segments of the Unit 2 refurbishment and is moving into the next phase of work. Our March 2017 KPIs show improved safety performance on Unit 2 refurbishment, as the project closed out the Defuel and Containment Isolation segment and has now moved into the removal phase, which major reactor components are removed to make way for the new parts. Strong schedule performance was achieved in March. The project remains ahead of schedule for the 40 month Unit 2 project. Safety performance was also excellent in March with no significant safety issues. The project currently stands at 2,646 days without a lost-time incident and over 5.1 million hours worked safely. Quality performance remains good. Costs are slightly below plan, largely due to favourable cost variances and timing of work. Cost control continues to be a focus. In early April, OPG successfully completed the first segment of refurbishment, safely separating from the operating units. This represents a major milestone and moves the refurbishment into the construction phase which involves removing reactor components while the rest of the station can continue to safely produce power. View the project performance key indicators. Key upcoming activities include:  Install bulkhead shielding in the vault to protect workers  Start draining moderator water  Remove fueling machine bridge and install re-tube tooling platform.
