DELIVERS DEDUPLICATION RATE OF 97 PERCENT Kotak completed a successful Proof of Concept (PoC) for EMC® Avamar® deduplication backup and recovery software and chose to deploy Avamar on its laptops and desktops to deliver fast, daily deduplicated backups. Avamar servers implement redundant array of independent nodes (RAIN) technology with two terabytes of licenses to ensure high availability of Kotak’s data and eliminate single points of failure. Kotak is currently using Avamar for daily backups of its VIP users’ laptops and its virtual machine environment connected to an EMC VNX®5500 unified storage system. As a result, Kotak has freed up significant disk space usually reserved for backups. “Our disk space has been greatly reduced by achieving a deduplication rate of 97 percent, which means the backup disk storage can be extended to a larger number of users and for critical applications in the data center,” says Kashyap.

HIGHLY RESPONSIVE SERVICE WITH FIVE TIMES FASTER RESTORATION When users are faced with an issue with their laptops, the time taken to restore data means delays in the service delivered to customers, such as the processing of claims and dealing with inquiries. And if data can only be restored to a later time stamp, the resulting data loss means Kotak risks non-compliance with industry regulations. The company was previously taking 10-12 hours to complete a full restoration. Now a restore can be completed by users without having to contact Kotak’s IT team. This means huge benefits for a workforce that is often offsite. “Users are in control of the restore process and it is a one-step recovery through a simple click. Users know exactly when the last backup was performed and can have their data back within two hours without disruptions. This means as a company we can remain highly responsive to the needs of our customers,” says Kashyap.

COMPLIANCE IS ASSURED Kotak must secure its data for seven years to meet regulatory compliance requirements for the insurance industry. The company has eliminated the risk of not being in compliance due to tape corruption or backup failure. Quick restoration times mean that Kotak can provide authorities with data within specific service level agreements and provide the assurance of data protection within its data center. Kashyap says, "Regulatory authorities require rapid access to data and tape takes an enormous amount of time to restore and access the data. In our industry we need a cost-effective, reliable recovery strategy and Avamar delivers a fast, highly reliable disk-based solution that ensures we remain compliant.”

PERSONALIZED SERVICE DUE TO EASE OF MANAGEMENT With the time now freed from the management of backups and time consuming restoration processes, Kashyap and his team have focused their efforts on proactive activities that improve the effectiveness of Kotak employees. “With more time available our team can redistribute resources towards monitoring and providing personalized support for employees. For example, we send individual alerts to mobile users informing them of their backup time stamp so users know the exact status of their data protection.
