Course Syllabus The course is divided into seven sections: INTRODUCTION This section introduces the subject and provides some general background.

PHASE 1 The starting point is to obtain the commitment of senior management to the programme of continual improvement and provide the resources required. Next you need to conduct a baseline review to determine your organisation’s current level of environmental performance. It is important to begin training and initiate the process of continual improvement.

How long does it take? It takes about eighty hours to complete the course. Most delegates spread this time over 6 months.

Assignment If you wish to be awarded the Loreus Certificate in Environmental Management you will have to complete an open book, multiple-completion test. The test is available online and can be taken any time, anywhere.

Passing the course This course operates on a pass/fail basis. The minimum pass mark for this course is 50%.

When you complete the course When you successfully complete the course, you will be awarded a certificate of achievement.

PHASE 2 This phase is concerned with legal compliance. Here you will need to develop procedures for identifying, accessing and complying with legal and other requirements such as industry standards. It is also important to develop compliance indicators so that you can easily check that you are complying with all relevant environmental legislation.

PHASE 3 The baseline environmental review undertaken in Phase 1 will help you to identify and rank your organisation’s aspects and use them to set objectives and targets for improvement. These will inform the environmental policy. The next step is to develop an environmental management programme and operational control procedures to help you achieve the objectives and targets set.

PHASE 4 The management structure for operating the EMS should now be clearly defined along with roles and responsibilities. General environmental awareness training should be conducted throughout the organisation and good communication methodologies put in place. Documentation needs to be controlled and emergency procedures put into place.

PHASE 5 This is the auditing phase of the BS 8555 process. Its function is to check that procedures are being followed and that the EMS is effective. Audit procedures need to be developed and staff trained in auditing techniques. Once this is done a programme can be developed to systematically audit all aspects of the EMS. Audit results should be summarised and presented to the Management Review Committee to check that the EMS is functioning effectively and delivering continual environmental improvement.

PHASE 6 What happens if I have a problem? We can help if you encounter any technical problems whist accessing or using the course. We also operate an e-mail helpline to support you during your studies.

Your organisation’s EMS should now be fully functional and delivering the objectives and targets set out in the policy. You may now wish to have your EMS acknowledged informally by yourself or your clients. Alternatively, you may wish to have your EMS certified to the international standard ISO 14001 or the European standard EMAS.

CASE STUDY This case study gives you an opportunity to test your understanding of the material covered in the course.
