How long does the course take? It will take approximately 40 hours to read the course content and take the test.

Online test and certificate Those wishing to be awarded the Loreus Environmental Legislation Certificate, will have to pass an online, open book, multiple-choice test. The pass mark for the test is 70% but you can have as many attempts at the test as they wish.

Course Syllabus This course is divided into 11 sections as follows: Environmental legislation Firstly, we introduce you to legal compliance, changing legislation and legislative instruments. International law This section covers the structure of international law along with the main international environmental conventions and developments stemming from the Stockholm Declaration. European law This section discusses the structure and institutions of the European Union. It also discusses EU regulations and directives, EC legislation and its relevance to the UK and the principles of the EC Environmental Policy. UK law In this section, we examine UK law and list the main UK environmental statutes. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 (EPA) is discussed in detail, as is the Environment Act 1995. The UK legislative process, case law, criminal and civil law and the court system are also discussed. Help with UK environmental law is provided through multiple links at the end of this section. UK law: controls on emissions to the atmosphere This section explains the major pieces of legislation regarding atmospheric pollution. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is discussed, as is the EC Air Policy, before moving onto more specific areas of legislation such as road vehicle pollution, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), waste incineration, ozone depleting substances, fluorinated gases, solvent emissions and greenhouse gases. The Climate Change Levy, emissions trading, environmental permitting, building energy performance certificates and the renewable heat incentive are also discussed in this section. UK law: controls on waste This section starts by discussing the main pieces of legislation regarding waste within the UK. It touches again on environmental permitting with respect to waste as well as discussing the different forms of waste and the role of the regulators. The treatment, storage, regulation and disposal of hazardous waste is also discussed. This section explains the responsibilities of the waste holder, including the duty of care regulations, waste storage, waste licensing, landfill tax, techniques for waste minimisation, waste surveys and the waste strategy for England. UK law: controls on discharges to water In this section, the main discharge regulations are discussed as are monitoring programmes, discharge controls, licensing, monitoring, legal enforcement and environmental permitting with respect to water. Control on discharges to sewers, use of the Mogden Formula, examples of discharge control and the ‘polluter pays’ principle are introduced. UK law: controls on contaminated land This section discusses the main regulations on contaminated land, the classification of special sites and remediation notices. Management, monitoring and remediation of contaminated land is also introduced here. UK law: nuisance In this section, the legislative instruments for nuisance are discussed as is other relevant legislation. UK law: producer responsibility In this section, regulations that deal with packaging waste are discussed, as are the Packaging Waste Regulations (PWR) and monitoring. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation is described, as is how to comply with these regulations. This section finishes with a discussion of the end-of-life vehicle regulations. UK law: wildlife & countryside legislation This section covers the main pieces of wildlife and countryside legislation such as the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, including schedules, offences and the law on nonnative species. The Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations are discussed as is badger protection, the bird directives and tree preservation among a wide variety of other regulations. This section finishes with information on complying with these laws and the typical penalties, fines and prosecution cases, as well as a list of the UK regulators.
