Step into a classroom today, and you’re just as likely to see interactive whiteboards or projection screens as you are traditional blackboards. They offer a smarter way of displaying and exploring information, and their introduction goes hand in hand with the adoption of digital learning environments. Lakelands Academy is a U.K. secondary academy for students aged 11 to 16. IT manager Chris Hodson is responsible for ensuring that teachers and learners have the best IT resources available to them. On the lookout for new screens to use in some of the academy’s classrooms, he took his search to BETT, Europe’s largest education technology fair. While visiting Dell’s stand, Hodson began talking to representatives from Dell’s Enterprise Partner of the Year, Nviron. “The academy uses Dell laptops, so I was keen to see what Dell had on offer,” says Hodson. “We initially talked about student devices, but I learned about the new interactive projectors, I jumped at the chance to install one at Lakelands Academy.” Shortly after this, engineers from Nviron came to install the projector. “That day was a learning experience for everyone,” says Hodson. Deciding which classroom to install it in was easy, as he explains, “We chose one of the languages classrooms, because we knew that the head of world studies, Karen Preece, would be excited to use the projector in lessons. The obvious choice is in an IT classroom, but we wanted to try somewhere a little bit different.” “I use technology in all of my lessons,” says Preece. “It’s a much more engaging way of learning and leads to better results and more motivated students. I offered to trial the projector because I thought it would provide more opportunities for interactivity in lessons. We use it for vocabulary learning games — like simple match-ups and identifying the correct phrase. Because the image

is so clear compared to a TV or other projectors, I can even project texts onto the board that students can work from.” Hodson says, “One of the benefits of the Dell Projector is that it provides a much larger image than any comparable large-screen TV. It works interactively on any existing wall or whiteboard, with no special surface required. I didn’t see that capability in projectors from other vendors. It means students can use a stylus or their hands to control what they see.” Preece continues, “The students have responded positively to the Dell Projectors and most of them love getting involved in the lessons.” Following the success of the pilot, the academy has plans to turn some of the walls in its drama studio into interactive walls for performances. “Nviron has been a great partner and we’re already talking to the team there about several other projects,” says Hodson. “We’re looking forward to a bright future.”
