LANDSCAPE AND PLANTING PROPOSALS

PLANTING STRATEGY The planting is designed to enhance the complex and make it feel part of the site. Indigenous hardy perennials and grasses will complement the planting already on site and nod to both what the site is (a brownfield site) and what it will become (a new landscaped area of the city). Inspired by similar examples such as the New York High Line and the Olympic Park Wildflower Meadow, careful note has also been taken of local details such as microclimate, the need to reduce bird visitors due to the nearby airport, and the movable nature of the project. Because the development on this site is temporary and we want the whole complex to be portable, all planting will be done in large containers which are able to be forklifted around the site and beyond. Outdoor seating is built into these planters so that people can enjoy the unique landscape of which Silvertown Studios will form part.

INSPIRATIONS

Innercity gardens which incorporate indigenous plants and hardy perennials in a wildflower type planting arrangement but designed strongly around the buildings and structures of the city: London Olympic Park (left); New York High Line (right). Enclosed gardens such as the Serpentine Pavilion by Peter Zumthor & Piet Oudolf (above). Further inspirations include: The Royal Docks themselves. Brownfield Sites. Existing Silvertown Pioneer Perenials.

PLANT TYPOLOGIES Native pioneer trees with indigenous grasses and wildflowers. Green walls compliment container plantings with mixed plant typologies. Container copse planting.

HARD LANDSCAPING An industrial look to metal staircases, walkways and railings is softened by extra wide stairs in public areas to form seating and encourage social relaxation time, as well as by planting areas on different surfaces at different heights. Steel Cable railings complement the railing already on site and nods to the nautical heritage of the site. Planters are designed to be portable and are made using recycled steel-formed water butt containers.

TEMPORARY STRUCTURES We want our artists and tenants to be part of building Silvertown Studios. Here are some examples of creative installations using temporary materials.
