Fabrics & Geotextiles Root Protection

TERRAM Rootguard Plus is used to protect buildings, walls, paths, drainage pipes, cables and lawns from potential damage caused by root development. Made from a geotextile and membrane, it can withstand even the most vigorous of tree roots.

Geosynthetics for Sustainable Drainage Made from synthetic fibres, a geotextile is a permeable sheet used within sustainable urban drainage to provide either separation (preventing layers of a sub-base from migrating into one another), filtration (improving the quailty of water which flows through) and drainage (allows water to escape back to the water table).

GeoGrids: A grid is a mesh structure (usually made from plastic) which is included in the sub-base of a permeable pavement to confine elements of sub-base aggregate and provide additional stability to the structure. Grids are employed on projects where ground conditions are poor, or where sub-base depth needs to be reduced.

Tree Root Protection Geoweb® The problem: Construction-related tree damage Critical Root Zone/Tree Protection Zone is the minimum area beneath a tree that must remain undisturbed to preserve a sufficient amount of root mass in order to give a tree a chance of survival. When construction equipment and vehicles intrude a tree’s Critical Root Zone, they can cause negative impacts to the soil environment including compaction of the soil, damage to near-surface roots and ultimately endanger the structural integrity of the tree. The majority of a tree’s root system is contained within the top three feet of the surface, and construction excavation and compaction can damage or even destroy roots to the point where trees may not survive. Sustainable Driveway Solutions The straightforward guide to driveway design within the guidelines of legislation Everyday decisions such as creating vehicle parking areas on our properties can have environmental consequences.

You simply need to decide how you would like to manage the rainwater that lands on a driveway.

In times of heavy or sustained rainfall the drainage system can become overloaded and cause catastrophic flooding. This has resulted in changes to Government legislation and it is becoming increasingly important to focus on well balanced, sustainable driveway design.

Here are three options you might choose to manage the rainwater that lands on your driveway, along with some product ideas for each option.

Achieving a well balanced driveway design within the guidelines of the legislation need not be complicated.

Option 1

Use permeable paving which allows rainwater to drain through the driveway into the ground below – NO PLANNING PERMISSION REQUIRED Install a suitable*, permeable driveway sub-base, which allows water to travel between the blocks into the ground. *Please see technical specification for details.

Sustainable Driveway Solutions Option 2

Direct rainwater from the driveway to a flower bed or another area of the garden which has been designed to allow water to drain away – NO PLANNING PERMISSION REQUIRED This option may involve using linear drainage or a driveway channel. Do not make any provision for the rainwater that falls on the driveway. PLANNING PERMISSION IS REQUIRED This is the least sustainable option and may contribute towards a build up of rainwater on the property during times of heavy rain. However, if you choose this option and the Local Authority grants Planning Permission any Marshalls impermeable concrete block paving can be used.

Permeable Paving In times of heavy or sustained rainfall drainage systems can become overloaded and cause catastrophic flooding. Changes in legislation mean that dealing with the rain water which lands at the front of a property is now the homeowner’s responsibility. One way of dealing with this surface water without gaining planning permission or using linear drainage is to use Permeable Paving, which allows rainwater to drain through the driveway into the ground below. Providing a specially calculated sub-base, the structural performance of the driveway will not be compromised. See page 21.

Permeable Paving not only looks good but manages surface water run off with the minimum amount of fuss. It is available in a number of attractive styles and finishes from the traditional ‘Drivesett® Tegula® Priora®’ (page 21) to the modern ‘Drivesett® Argent® Priora®’ (page 23), and for those who want to retain some grass within their parking area ‘Bioverse®’ (page 25) is perfect.

Grassguard®

An innovative, sustainable alternative to traditional concrete block paving. Grassguard® has an open grid pattern that allows grass to grow through the blocks giving a “green” option for driveways and hardstanding areas in front gardens. Grass can be cut and maintained as a conventional lawn hiding the concrete. Ideal for that 2nd car parking space it doubles as a lawn when not in use. Marshalls do not recommend that this product is installed as a circle feature. Driveway Construction: Once installed, compact blocks using a vibrating plate with a neoprene (rubber) mat before jointing. Failure to do this will result in damage to the face of the blocks.

Sleepers Reclaimed Railway Sleepers Sleepers have a multitude of landscaping uses, including decking, planters for raised beds, walling and edging.

Eco Sleepers Manufactured mainly from Northern European Hardwood taken only from sustainable sources. Kiln-dried and pressure treated to Use Class 4 (Ground contact) and certified accordingly. Wallbarn Support Pads Wallbarn support pads are designed to hold paving slabs and decking off the waterproofed deck to allow adequate drainage. They are a fast, easy-to-install alternative to bedding slabs down into mortar. They are manufactured with positioning lugs which hold the paving or decking in place, ensuring uniform spacing across the area. The cavity beneath prevents standing water causing a slip hazard and the drainage below is uninterrupted. Roofs built to falls can still have completely flat upper surfaces using adjustable supports, creating high quality finishes. For your reassurance, the preservative systems used on our timber comply with and are applied to modern industry standards. Our timber is preserved in controlled industrial treatment operations at any one of our strategic locations or at carefully selected third party timber suppliers.

Specifying Preserved Timber Preserved timber products can be produced with the appropriate preservative system that meets the British and European standards. The colour of treated products may vary due to natural variations in the timber and will fade with time. To preserve the original appearance, we recommend regular further treatment with a suitable treatment, such as Cuprinol Timbercare. Dip Treated products should be allowed to mature first, should you wish to change the colour. As with all treated timber, we recommend that if further cutting, drilling or notching is carried out, the freshly exposed areas should be treated with Cuprinol Trade Wood Preserver.


PT Pressure Treated Products Products marked with the Pressure Treated symbol have been pressure-impregnated with a preservative, giving an expected service life of 15 years. Subject to correct installation.

DT Dip Treated Products Products marked with the Dip Treated symbol have been surface-treated with a preservative, giving an expected service life of 10 years, subject to correct installation and to being isolated from direct contact with the ground. Dip Treated fence panels should be isolated from the ground by means of Pressure Treated or concrete gravel board.

Travis Perkins plc have recently achieved the Carbon Trust Standard certifying that we have genuinely reduced our carbon footprint and

are committed to making further reductions year on year. We have committed to reducing construction supply chain waste and signed WRAP’s Halving Waste to Landfill commitment. We are members of the WWF Forest and Trade Network and have certified timber and timber products available at branches across our network. In buying FSC® certified products, you are supporting responsible forest management around the world.

Sustainable Products We are already embracing the changing needs of the market by providing a range of technologies and products designed to help reduce the impact on the environment. These include low energy lighting, solar panels, rainwater harvesting and ground sourced heat pumps. Successfully reducing carbon emissions Marshalls was the first company in the world to measure and publish the carbon value of the 2000 plus hard landscaping products it manufactures. Awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in 2009 for its work in measuring, managing and reducing its business carbon footprint. In 2011 Marshalls was the first company in its sector to re-certify, demonstrating a 15% reduction in carbon emissions; a really proud achievement for the organisation. The Carbon Trust Standard provides a benchmark and independent measure of best practice for those organisations making a real impact by reducing their carbon emissions. Matching the Government’s pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050, Marshalls is well on its way to helping our country make a real difference in fighting the causes of climate change.

For those wanting to compare products, Marshalls carbon labels are leading the field, not only by providing independently verified carbon footprints for domestic products but also by demonstrating proven reductions in carbon emissions. This enables customers to make informed decisions about the products they buy, and therefore about their own impact on the environment.

Carbon Calculator As part of this ongoing commitment to carbon and energy reduction, Marshalls was the first company in the hard landscaping industry to devise and launch a Carbon Calculator to enable customers to measure their carbon impact. The Carbon Calculator works by asking for the quantity of each product you wish to use, instantly giving a figure for the CO2 impact and letting you see how many trees are required to offset the carbon produced in the creation of your driveway or patio.

Carbon Footprint A carbon footprint is the sum of the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases created by a single unit of product during its life from raw material extraction, production, through the supply chain, to use and disposal. Reducing CO2 Emissions Marshalls is committed to reducing its carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency. There have been significant cuts in carbon emissions since 2008 through energy efficiency, more investment and cultural change. Marshalls was also the first company to publish the carbon footprint of all the products it makes in the UK, so customers can make informed decisions about the carbon impact of their purchases.

Protecting the Environment

Child labour should not be used

The biodiversity of Marshalls, manufacturing sites is carefully managed to support local flora and fauna and the learnings are shared with other environmental organisations and local communities. Marshalls is the proud recipient of The Wildlife Trust’s prestigious Biodiversity Benchmark Award for three manufacturing sites. Protecting the environment is a key part of Marshalls’ sustainable strategy.

Working hours should not be excessive

Marshalls is also a proud signatory of the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest voluntary corporate responsibility initiative based upon principles of human rights, labour standards, environment and anti-corruption.

Workers should not be verbally, physically or sexually abused or disciplined.

General Technical Information Efflorescence

Colour Variation

All concrete products may, in their early life, appear to lose some intensity of colour and experience a milky-white stain on the face of the product. This is efflorescence staining. It is a temporary phenomenon and is in no way detrimental to the performance of the material and responsibility cannot be accepted for its occurrence.

The colours shown in this literature are as exact as photographic and printing processes will allow. We strongly recommend that the colours are judged and chosen from actual materials rather than photographic representation depicted herein. Although every effort is made to ensure consistency of product colour, variations between production batches can occur. We therefore recommend that, when purchasing materials, especially in the case of larger quantities, they all come from the same batch and that products are thoroughly mixed on site by drawing from a minimum of three packs.

Clay products may also suffer from a temporary white stain called efflorescence. This is quite different from efflorescence in concrete products and is caused by soluble salts within the clay being transported by water to the surface as they dry out. Responsibility cannot be accepted for its occurrence.

Maintenance Paving materials require periodic cleaning to maintain their appearance. Regular sweeping to prevent the build-up of detritus is recommended. Light coloured blocks, whilst structurally sound for driveway use, are liable to emphasise tyre marks and oil spills on the driveway. It must be accepted that these products will need more maintenance if the overall appearance is to be maintained. Ask in your local branch for care and maintenance products. Care should be taken when buying cleaning agents as some varieties contain a concentration of acid, which can adversely affect the appearance of concrete products, clay and natural stone. For general cleaning of dirt and algae, vigorous brushing with a stiff yard broom with plenty of hot detergent solution (washing up liquid or nonbio washing powder), thoroughly rinsed with clean water should suffice. Repeated treatment may be required for paved areas sited beneath trees or in permanent/near permanent shade. In certain circumstances, prolonged contact with wet leaves can result in staining of the paved area. Such contact should be avoided wherever practical. Certain common garden chemicals such as Ferrous Sulphate can stain paving. Please check the information given on the container holding the chemical. If chemicals are spilt on the paving remove immediately by rinsing away with clean water.

Power-washing Power-washing with high-pressure equipment is not normally required. Should these methods be employed, the following precautions should be observed: Paving should be thoroughly swept to remove detritus (loose debris) that could act as an abrasive agent when moved by the force of a power jet. A trial area should be tested before larger scale power-washing takes place. No more than a medium pressure should be applied when washing paving. The power-washing lance should be held at an oblique angle to the paving and at least 200mm (8”) from the surface. If excess sand is washed from the joints during the washing exercise, it is important that the joints are re-sanded with similar materials upon completion. If mortar joints between pavings are damaged during power-washing they should be re-pointed/made good with fresh pointing as required, to maintain the integrity of the paving.

Silver Birch like all Natural Stone Sandstone products vary with differing geological conditions. Such variations can lead to small particles of ironstone within the product creating a darkening of the surface with natural weathering. Being pale in coloration, this natural weathering is more obvious with Silver Birch as against the other natural stones in the Marshalls range.

Sizes & Joint Widths All dimensions quoted in this catalogue are nominal and are for guidance only. Actual sizes will vary, particularly on the products designed to replicate natural stone which have features such as riven profiles and fettled edges. Where space is critical, we recommend dry laying the product to check area required (especially circles and patio feature kits). The sizes and quantities given in the paving pages usually allow a nominal 10-15mm joint width.

Conditions required for Priora and Tegula® Priora The grade of Priora featured in this brochure is only intended for normal domestic vehicles and pedestrian traffic, though occasional delivery vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross weight can be tolerated. For full conditions and guidelines for use ring the Marshalls Technical Advisory Service on 0870 411 2233 should you require a more detailed discussion on the intended use of the area. Installers can call for a technical pack on 0845 820 5000. We strongly recommend that this product is installed by a professional tradesman.

Grassguard® Easy to lay with recommended sub base of 150mm MOT Type 1, hardcore, and a bedding regulating layer of sharp sand or pea shingle 25mm thick. This sub-base is to contain some humus type material to support root development and maintain growth during dry periods, although grass may still brown. A fine soil or loam with a peat mixture or proprietory compost should be poured in to approximately 30mm below the top surface of the slabs. Seed with tough coarse rye grass which as it grows binds the slabs and base materials together to progressively improve structural strength and loadbearing.
