About – Laurie Landa
Laurie Landa Candidate for Library Director, New Fairfield Laurie is currently a New Fairfield Library Director. Laurie moved to New Fairfield from Moorhead, Minnesota, in 2009. She holds a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Botany from the University of California, Davis, and a Master’s Degree, also in Botany, from the University of Iowa. She worked in medical research at the University of Michigan, taught botany labs for Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, and worked as a teacher’s assistant in a second-grade classroom in Indianapolis. She and her husband, Keith Landa, have one son, Erik. She began volunteering in school libraries when Erik was in grade school. She continues volunteering in New Fairfield through the Friends of the Library, where she serves as Treasurer, and on the Library Board, as an elected member for the past 6 years. If elected, Laurie pledges to: Work with the Library Board, the Friends and library staff to enhance the children’s library so new families can bring their children to a welcoming active learning environment. Continue to support program funding for adults and children. And, no small thing, she wants to push the administration to stripe the handicapped parking space behind the library so patrons have easy access to our new elevator.
“I am focused on the future of our library. Town libraries are the education centers of their communities for both children and adults. Our library should be considered the crown in town center. New Fairfield’s present leadership continues to be disconnected from the library’s needs, despite the Library Board’s efforts to maintain basic funding. Every year the library’s budget is cut, including a whopping $30,000 last year, which cost 2 employees their positions. It’s time New Fairfield polished our crown.”
