Social Media Manager Lead community engagement and community management Manage, develop and optimize UNHCR’s social media presence. Update platforms with timely, relevant, engaging and innovative content. Strategically utilize social media tools and networks to raise awareness of UNHCR, and encourage audience participation in specific UNHCR themes and campaigns and warm individuals to support the organization financially. i. Coordinate with relevant DER units (chiefly Media, Public Affairs, Photo, Video, Private Sector Fundraising) to develop and oversee the day-to-day maintenance of UNHCR’s presence on social media networks (currently Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, LinkedIn, Klout, Google+, Scribd). Ensure consistent branding and messaging across social media platforms. ii. Oversee the moderation of user-generated content across UNHCR-branded platforms. Respond to user-generated content, whether positive or negative, in a manner that shows that UNHCR truly listens and invites constructive dialogue and commentary. Determine when and how to best respond to critical or inappropriate comments, applying professional judgment and nuanced tone to avoid antagonizing authors or inviting further criticism. iii. Adapt/shape and generate content for platforms submitted from the field. Conduct interviews. iv. Conceive and implement social media strategies to extend the reach and impact of events (such as the Ministerial Meeting in December 2011), campaigns and initiatives on relevant social networks. Develop and promote social media packages for major campaigns and initiatives, including Goodwill Ambassador missions and the Nansen Refugee Award. v. Establish and manage contacts with key thinkers and journalists engaged on social networks. Cultivate social media influencers to help spread UNHCR messaging through social networks. vi. Monitor, measure, and evaluate UNHCR’s use of social media tools. Gather metrics, analytics, and monitor engagement levels on different platforms. Measure what works and make recommendations based upon these measurements using online monitoring and analysis tools. Build the capacity of offices and staff to utilize social media Train and advise UNHCR staff, particularly Public Information officers and field-based staff, to use social media networks as part of their day-to-day work while showing an understanding for news and content. i. Educate offices and staff as necessary. Build on the work already been done and continue to educate and assist UNHCR offices globally in the use of social media as a campaign / communications tool. ii. Set-up training sessions, and when necessary, call in (via Skype) to regional meetings. Provide one-on-one coaching for staff interested in learning more about social media and its benefits both to UNHCR and their work. Encourage mainstreaming and entrenching of social media as part of the overall communication channels used by UNHCR. iii. Develop social media guidelines or 'how to' documents for using specific social media platforms.

Pursue continuous learning and best practices for social media i. Monitor use of social media by other UN and humanitarian organizations, news media, private enterprises and individual trendsetters with an eye to identifying best practices and innovative uses of social media that could be adapted by UNHCR. ii. Test out new social media platforms and assess whether they can provide a practical use for UNHCR (e.g., geo-locating, livestreaming, Pinterest). When appropriate, begin growing and building a presence. iii. Represent and work with counterparts at other UN agencies to share best practices and advice. Also represent UNHCR at relevant local and international meetings, discussions, and panels. iv. Explore new ways to engage on social media networks. Monitor trends in the social media field and respond to developments.

The fees for this Consultancy will be equivalent to P-3 level of the UN Salary Scale, and the determination of the fees will depend on the qualifications and the background of the applicant.
