THE EDITOR’S DESK

Dimensions Of Leadership

W

hile defining the term Leader, It is said that a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It’s about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. Chronically, the definition of Leadership changes with respective to time, place, and situation. Present day trends with leadership are built around the ability to engage people and coach your team. We can find leaders in any part of the society; teachers can be the leader because they guide the society, The politicians- because they create policies for mankind, the government official, Journalists, who may be a vicarious bridge between government and public. Roughly, we can’t limit the term Leadership with any nomenclature. A magazine is only as good as its readership. As we believe in the formula - Readers are the real Leaders. There is no secret sauce or technology which can replace the creative brain power required to produce a magazine. There is no fixed formula. Each issue has to be different and fresh, as it is perishable too. We are standing at the door of trichotomy to celebrate another ceremonial moment. When we had started, there was no such alternative that can become the voice of unsung leaders and produce enterprises of leadership, But we took the baton and decided to produce and rampage information without bounding us in any color(s). This magazine has cross set the barriers of beginning cycle, now as a herald, we will put our efforts to contrive and starved of credible information. The articles in this issue not only make for fascinating reading, they tell you why leader’s role is bigger than we imagine, and why we call them ‘The Marshall of society- Who lead, guide, and Inspire for growth’. Happy reading!

TRIBUTE

Anupam Mishra 8 - January 2017 / Leaders Speak

www.leadersspeak.in

N

oted environmentalist Anupam Mishra wore many hats: he was an environmentalist, a journalist, an author and an authoritative voice in the field of water conservation in India. But after his demise, besides all these adjectives, he will be remembered as a true Gandhian ideologue and an effective communicator of his ideas, who emphasized on India’s ancient and traditional ways of water conservation. Mishra, who belonged to Madhya Pradesh, died on Monday at the age of 68 after a long battle with cancer. Mishra had a witty and wise way to address any problem. He always used to look at issues with a different perspectives. He would use a mix of simple language and emotions to explain the gravity of water related issues with remarkable optimism. The best way of paying tribute to Anupam would be to recognize his body of work and follow his ancient and traditional way of water conservation and rain water harvesting model, rather than blindly following modern technology,” Saraph said. Mishra’s friends and associates remember him as a person, who never had any ego and believed in simple living based on Gandhian principles. “Throughout his life, his lifestyle reflected commitment to Gandhian principles. In one word, he was truly Anupam (unique/incomparable in Hindi). I never saw him getting angry. Even when his views were being strongly opposed, he used to sweetly register his protest, and became ironical when he was sad,” said Ravi Chopra, Director, People’s Science Institute, Dehradun. “What made him different from his fellow men? It was his consistent hard work. He would go to the remotest parts of the country, where we couldn’t, to pursue his mission of water conservation. His uniqueness lay in appreciating the local and traditional ways of rain water harvesting and conservation of water bodies,” he said. Mishra was highly influenced by his father Bhavani Prasad Mishra, a Gandhian poet and litterature A recipient of Jamnalal Bajaj Award, Amar Shaheed Chandrashekhar Azad National Award and many others, Mishra was the editor of the bi-monthly ‘Gandhi Marg,’ published by the Gandhi Peace Foundation. You don’t need money to protect the environment; but you need to tell people about their tradition and they have to live up to it Referring to Mishra’s book titled ‘Talab (Pond) - Aaj Bhi Khare Hain Talab’, which has been translated in many languages including French, Chopra said, “I owe a personal debt to him as I learnt so much from his works. I got immensely fascinated by his traditional ways of water harvesting.” Chopra feels that the country would miss Mishra’s sage advice on matters of environmental conservation. “You don’t need money to protect environment; but you need to tell people about their tradition and they have to live up to it,” Chopra quoted Mishra as saying. But, there is more to Mishra’s ideology. Noted socialist, and former professor of Jawahar Lal Nehru University, Prof Anand Kumar, was a close friend and associate for more than four decades, recalls Mishra’s staunch support to the antiemergency movement and his association with Jayprakash Narayan. “After his education from Delhi University, he got into Lohiya movement. He was close to Jaiprakash ji ( Jaiprakash Narayan) and got to work with him in early 1970s during the surrender of dacoits. He wrote Chambal Mein Atmasamarpan (Surrender in Chambal), and through this work, people came to know about the historical contribution of JP.” Kumar also states that during the emergency, when Jaiprakash Narayan was shifted to Mumbai for treatment, Mishra had even organised a secret meeting with him and other fellows on antiemergency movement, a fact very few people know about him. Swaraj Abhiyan leader, Professor Somnath Tripathi marked while sharing remembrance, “ His worked on water resources, and its conservation is incomparable, even, we have distributed his book on the pound in my organisation Swaraj Abhiyan, so that young generation can learn the ground things. He used to believe in work behind the scenes and always wanted to remain a silent hero” Noted socialist Ramdheera, activist Jagriti Rahi also grieved on the demise of this phenomena.

Leaders Don’t Create Followers… They Create More Leaders By Shwetank Mishra

10 - January 2017 / Leaders Speak

www.leadersspeak.in

The essence of transformational theories is that leaders transform their followers through their inspirational nature and charismatic personalities. Rules and regulations are flexible, guided by group norms. These attributes provide a sense of belonging for the followers as they can easily identify with the leader and its purpose.

N

oted historian Ramchandra Guha quoted in his book,’India After Gandhi that - What is now in the past was once in the future and that future rooted by none other than our leaders who’s foot has become

notes to follow. At a time we had bounded the term leadership with the stereotype ideologue, but now, leadership term has broadened its vocabulary and crossed the barriers of nomenclatures. In retro time, the Leadership term illustrated by various theories. One of the theories was, The Great Man theory came in 1840, which assumes that the traits of leadership are intrinsic. That simply means that great leaders are born. On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History they are not made. This theory sees great leaders as those who are destined by birth to become a leader. In 1860, Herbert Spencer, an English philosopher disputed the great man theory by affirming that these heroes are simply the product of their times and their actions the results of social conditions. During the 1940s, the trait leadership theory came and it believes that people are either born or are made with certain qualities that will make them excel in leadership roles. That is, certain qualities such as intelligence, sense of responsibility, creativity, and other values put anyone in the shoes of a good leader. In modern theories, The Transformational Leadership theory- states that this process is by which a person interacts with others and is able to create a solid relationship that results in a high percentage of trust, that will later result in an increase of motivation, both

www.leadersspeak.in

intrinsic and extrinsic, in both leaders and followers. The essence of transformational theories is that leaders transform their followers through their inspirational nature and charismatic personalities. Rules and regulations are flexible, guided by group norms. These attributes provide a sense of belonging for the followers as they can easily identify with the leader and its purpose. While at a time, many old-fashioned leaders measure their influence by the number of followers that they can claim. According to noted American writer and business management expert, Tom Peters, the greatest leaders are those who don’t look for followers. Think of Martin Luther King, Jr., Mohandas Gandhi or Nelson Mandela. They were trying to create more leaders in order to help many others to find and create their own destinies.” Mahatma Gandhi never asked to lead from the front and has delegated authority to multiple poles, from Nehru, Patel to Bose all have become the pillars of our rich history under the aegis of him. Gandhi was inhabited with a habit to first improve them self, perhaps, this is the first concept of leadership to first become a source of inspiration by practicing on us. Post Independence eras also saw drastic changes, when so many emerging leadership muscled in to replace pseudo-authoritative power(s). If we dig into the corporate, we find the name of Ratan Tata, the name itself inspires thousands of lives. Many prominent names claim that the legendary businessman, investor, and philanthropist is a boon to India. In cricket, we have entitled, Bharat Ratna, Sachin Tendulkar as a role model for many, as a calm, peace

Leaders Speak / January 2017 - 11

loving cricketer, he has recreated the definition of leadership, he often suggested to young aspirant cricketers that, we should judge on our performance based, and we should reply with our bat or bowl rather than arguments. Noble prize winner, Amartya Sen’s in his popular book, The Argumentative India - encapsulated the different perspectives of leadership. Sen has reviewed the history of two major Indian leaders – Ashoka and Akbar – as examples of India’s pre-colonial embrace of pluralism and multiculturalism. Sen has highlighted the hidden aspects of leadership which equally critical of those who try to promote a sense of Indian national identity by rejecting any economic, social, or intellectual engagement with the West. Ironically, Leadership has no fixed theory or state which can define the leadership thoroughly. Leader can be a person who belongs to any part or the society, a teacher can be a leader because he uses to nurture the young minds, a politician could be a leader who makes the policy for people, a journalist or public servant can be a leader, who acts as a bridge between government and common man. A Marshall, soldier can be a leader who stands around the clock. A doctor can be leader to guide a society to heal. Our Manger or corporate leader, who has innovated vital product or methods to serve the society. A common man, farmers can be a leader who works relentlessly, without caring much about the name, fame, and other fringe elements. In contrast, we can’t frame leadership with any nomenclatures.

So, what makes a leader to a role model? V. Mishra, a young vice president, who has been working on helping his team of vice presidents become better leaders. He is inspiring, challenging and always expects (and usually gets) the best from his team. He says he is in the business of creating leaders. President, Ramnagar Industrial Association, R.K. Chaudhary vehemently believe that real leaders create and inspire other leaders and they have their own style to delegate this” Varanasi-based Social Activist, Jagriti Rahi feels that a leader should be a role model; his role must be bigger than leading team. Getting leadership is the bit easier task while becoming a role model is like eating nuts. Mumbai-based lawyer, Anjana Sharma described,” Leadership goes beyond a person’s formal position into realms of informal, hidden, or unauthorized influence. Moreover, we need to remember that leadership, or the lack of it, is usually better recognized by the so-called followers than by the formal leaders, To some extent, these perceptions depend upon a

12 - January 2017 / Leaders Speak

person’s formal status, but they also depend upon the roles that a person is assigned, chooses, or is allowed to take by others.” “We may find unsung leaders in our family, friends, and any other places.” Anjana added.

What Researcher Says? In a study by Louis B. Barnes and Mark P. Kriger, mentioned that “We began our study by focusing on decision making in large organizations because we believed that effective decision making is part of effective leadership. As with leadership, our concept of decision making differed from some prevailing views. We defined it as the entire “decision process” surrounding a complex issue. This definition includes follow-up actions and implementations, not just the actual decisions themselves. We wanted to understand how people formally and informally transformed decision ingredients into decision actions in pursuit of agreed upon or competing goals. This process resembled complex spirals of formulation and implementation. It took time, was difficult to measure, and often involved hundreds of organizational producers, directors, actors, and audiences. We came to think of on the below conclusions: We need to stop talking as though executive leadership in decision making is primarily a one-person drama played by CEOs or leaders only. That’s an illusion, not an accurate report of how organizational leadership works. We also need to observe and use paradox as a clue. For example, it takes a hierarchical leader to take the step toward exaggerated trust. Only such a step can begin the complementary networking process. That means stepping outside of one’s hierarchical role to create potentially competitive networks. Hierarchical leadership is needed to create and support useful networking leaderships. Though less obvious, the opposite is also true. Managers need to consider and work on developing complementarily skills. They need to create bases of trust across formal boundaries, built more upon what one is willing to give up than upon what one can take away. Managers must also face up to the meaning of networking leadership as complementary to hierarchies so that people in both roles maintain some autonomy while also looking for ways to shoelace across the gaps. They might begin by looking beyond any critical tension, dichotomy, or opposite. Networking leaderships offer flexibility for exploring uncertainty and ambiguity, as when hierarchical leadership wishes to search out an uncertain environment or explore new areas of opportunity

www.leadersspeak.in

which will eventually need hierarchical leaderships to run them. The two perspectives must be shoelaces actively back and forth so that neither, especially the more dominant hierarchical perspective, prevails when the other would be more useful. The skill is to keep each independent and yet complementary. That is easy to say and very difficult to do.

A teachable point of view: The idea of having leaders develop leaders has been formulating for years. In the late 1980s, Noel Tichy and Patricia Stacey, a principal of Action Learning Associate in Ann Arbor, Michigan, worked at General Electric Medical Systems to design its Work-Out program. Later at Ameritech, HaperCollins, and Shell Oil, leaders were asked to develop leaders. For example, at Ameritech in 1993, 1,000 managers participated in a program, called Breakthrough, to develop their leadership skills. To kick off the experience, senior executives taught three-day workshops to 50 managers at a time. The executives discussed the threats and opportunities from accelerating changes in the telecommunications industry. They also taught managers about Ameritech’s response – a renewed focus on growth, reorganization into customer–focused units, and an aggressive drive for cost leadership. The senior leaders also introduced and helped people deal with a massive culture change to focus on customers, to encourage risk-taking and initiative, and to break internal barriers and bureaucracy. Last, managers received tools in teamwork, problem-solving, and change management. The 1,000 managers were challenged to return to their work units and do two things: Hold workshops with their people to explain Ameritech’s strategic and cultural shifts and launch action projects for practicing new behaviors, such as working across organizational boundaries. The action projects were both learning opportunities

www.leadersspeak.in

and a financial benefit, in the form of $700 million through cost savings or new revenue. Breakthrough also helped develop the executives and the 1,000 managers into better leaders by making them teach and develop others. Senior leaders developed the 1,000 managers. Then, the 1,000 managers developed their staffs while running the action projects. When we integrated that work with our research, we made an important connection: The most powerful experience is when leaders teach their own points of view. You can’t just hand leaders a deck of slides and tell them to go forth.

Essentials of Leadership: Lead by example – People take their cues from the leader. It is critically important to living the values that you espouse. In other words, be authentic. When you have made a mistake, own up to it. Notice acts of leadership by people that you work with and say thank you Celebrate the achievements of others every chance you get Encourage others to put their ideas forward and defend them Listen twice as much as you talk Stay available and accessible for people to discuss both problems and solutions with you Encourage people to challenge you and your ideas, and praise them for doing so Facilitate, don’t preach Give clear and helpful feedback to everyone

Time To Recuperate From Hooliganism

Union Minister of State for Tourism & Culture, Mahesh Sharma, bashes on the opposition parties and marked, ‘Dalit’s Daughter has now become the ‘Daulat ki Beti’ and BJP is the only solution of growing hooliganism in Uttar Pradesh. By Shwetank Mishra

Q&A Q:What is the idea to select Varanasi as a destination for the national event? A: After achieving grand success in the last year’s Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav (RSM)-2015 which held at Delhi, we thought to rampant this across the nation and selected five destinations. Though, Varanasi is the cultural capital of the nation. The other destinations are Tawang from Arunachal Pradesh, Banglore, and J&K. Varanasi is just another destination in the series. People from rest part of the country visiting this

place between 17-24 December, in BHU to analyzing the cultural diversities of the nation. The festival has been receiving continuous gratitude each day for playing a major role to effectively connect the audience to the rich, diverse and undiscovered culture of India. It will showcase the rich and varied dimensions, viz Handicrafts, Cuisine, Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Documentation and Performing ArtsFolk, Tribal, Classical, and Contemporary- all in one place.

Leaders Speak / January 2017 - 15

Q: Whether the event is limited to BHU audience only? A: No, this isn’t BHU’s event; this is the national festival which is open to all. Earlier, we tried to do this on Assi Ghat or nearby place but as the local administration denied to give the permission, so we move towards BHU, which is a place convenient to all.

environment, roads, and other basic needs. We have given them 250 Cr. rupees fund to the state to encourage tourism. Sadly, there is no appropriate work. We have given the contract to TCIL (Thomas Cook (India) Ltd.), to promote Uttar Pradesh’s tourism and awareness and raised 150 cr, 154 cr. for Ayodhya. We have raised the amount for Krishna Circuit and Buddha circuit too.

Q: What are the issues there? A: The Local administration warned that due to the presence of various popular artists like Kailash Kher, Manoj Tiwari, and Malini Awasthi, They can find difficulties to manage the crowd.

Q: What are the other plans to attract inbound tourism? A: We have extended visa on arrival facility to 161 countries, our national tourism increase with 9.6 percent growth while the worldwide average is only 4.5 percent growth. The numbers of Foreign Tourist Arrivals in India during 2013, 2014, 2015 were 6.97 million, 7.68 million and 8.03 million, respectively.

Q: Is there any corruption charges on Lalit Kala academy’s secretary, Sudhakar Sharma? A: Still, I don’t have any information regarding this and If anything comes to me, we will certainly do the justice. Q: What’s your other plan to encourage tourism? A: We chalked out some plans to attract Buddhist too. Though Varanasi has the biggest airport so we are targeting to make Varanasi a center point of these Buddhism destinations. We want to make Sarnath as a center of Buddhism culture and from here, to start the tour of Gaya, Kushinagar. So that any Buddhist devotee can camp here and from here we’ll plan their journey to other religious destinations. Q: Even after raising the budget, there is only talk in spite of implementation since two and half years? A: We have raised the fund and ironically, all lapses without use. The amount ultimately returned to center without use. And the state government didn’t act on our sent money. Earlier, I have raised 30 cr rupees for the Mathura circuit, but the amount return by state government without any work. The state is not giving appropriate support to center to encourage Uttar Pradesh’s tourism. There is three circuit, Krishna Circuit, Buddha Circuit, and Ramayana Circuit. We have raised 43 Cr. for Chitrakut. However, this fund is not returned but they are delaying in starting the project. Q: Despite various schemes to Varanasi like Hridaya, Prasad, and other, things are going even worse, and even the town has to struggle with basic necessities such as roads and transportation issues? A: I told you honestly, the state government has no intention to develop state’s tourism. If they only develop the tourism part, the state can improve their

16 - January 2017 / Leaders Speak

Q: What’s your plan to launch Visa on arrival facility in Varanasi? A: We are planning for this and hopefully soon launch, and we are planning to make Lucknow and Varanasi an international hub for Uttar Pradesh tourism. Like recently, we have started Airways service in Allahabad. Agra, Chitrakut, and Ayodhya would be next including our target to make at least 9 airports. We are analyzing the demands and not in Varanasi but even we are planning to increase the number of international flights in all the 16 international airports and to give visa on arrival facility. Q: Recently, your government raising campaigns for the cashless economy? Do you think is it feasible? A: Since we talked about electronic fund transfer, it boosted ten times from earlier period. The income increases by 20 times. Q: Don’t you think this happen because of Demonetisation move? A: No, this happened in routine, it increases; there is no such effect of demonetisation. Q: So many day’s passes away after Demonetisation decision and only a few days are left; people are still struggling, people are still standing in the queue? A: The prime minister already said that, if you find any difference in my thought and words, give me punishment on signal. There were some disorders, and even some bank officers found guilty, are we are in process to penalize them. But the people of the country supported this scheme with the whole

www.leadersspeak.in

heart, even they have to face pain and suffering but they are with the pure intention of our prime minister.

I have strong believed that we will replicate the success of Loksabha election where we won 73 out of 80 parliamentary constituencies.

Q: Is it corruption within corruption, as you said some bank officers found guilty? A: Prime Minister said ‘Ek-Ek paise kaa hisab hoga’, we have found the guilty people and ready to punish them. We will keep the book of those banks who are involved in corruption. Q: You sought for ‘ParivartanYatra’ in Uttar Pradesh, What kind of Parivartan is it? And how are you strategizing the things? A: Bhartiya Janta Party believes in good governance, we are working for U.P. election since last one year. BJP is a cadre base party. We have delegate the authority to various heads and all are working towards. Prime Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh, is doing various rallies. Firmly, I have strong believed that we will replicate the success of Loksabha election where we won 73 out of 80 parliamentary constituencies. In past times, Uttar Pradesh has seen the government of two corrupt parties, on one side the daughter of Dalit turned as Daughter of Wealth and become the synonyms of corruption, while on the other hand, The Akhilesh Yadav, stuck in the middle of family disputes. Even, Netajee has accepted that their party workers, leaders indulge in corruption and land seizure. There is no future of SP in U.P. Congress is struggling since the last 20 years in U.P. and there is no hope left with them. So, Apparently, BJP has bright future in U.P. under the leadership of Our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, and BJP President

Q&A Q: Tell us about the initial stage of your life and when did you become interested in current profession? A: My current profession is not a thought through and planned objective , infact during my college studies in Gurgaon I became interested towards joining defence forces and cleared my exam in first attempt , joined Indian Air Force in ground duties. I soon realised that I may not enjoy overall progress and limited exposure here therefore took volunteer discharge after serving around 7 years. I did complete my M.Com by that time wanted to contribute in IT field , managed to learn basic programming as I wished to move to US however that wasn’t where I destined to be , 1999 Visa cap & other issues made me think to start my carrier towards administration and facility management and joined Shoppers Stop to setup their first north India store in South Delhi Ansal Plaza. Rest is history where I have contributed in setting up best of BPOs and Telecome support Center in NCR. Q: What are driving forces behind your decision to go for the current profession? A: My experience during my Air Force tenure made me a better resource & crisis manager , these are some of the main requirements to be better facility management professional and I have been successful due to these skills mainly.

An Epitome Of Knowledge

Dr.A.K Bakhshi Vice-Chancellor PDM University Bahadurgarh Haryana.

He is a founder Vice Chancellor at PDM University, Bahadurgarh, Haryana, India. Also, he is a Chairman of Centre for e-Learning as well as Chairman of Guru Angad Dev Teaching – Learning Centre at SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi. He also worked as Executive Director (CEO) of Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), Mauritius. In an interview with Leaders Speak, Dr. AK Bakhshi, founder Vice-Chancellor of PDM university spoke about his inclination towards teaching.

22 - January 2017 / Leaders Speak

www.leadersspeak.in

His Journey Born and brought up in an average middle class family in Delhi. Dr. Bakhshi did his schooling from a municipal corporation school thereafter he got in Ramjas Higher Secondary School, New Delhi. He was gravitated towards Chemistry and therefore he did his graduation and master in Chemistry from Ramjas College, University of Delhi. “I topped in M.Sc. examination breaking all the previous records of the University. As a result I got my first job as a lecturer at the age of 21 and thus from here began my career as a teacher. And then there was no looking back. Teaching became not only my profession but also my passion.” He elaborate. He is a recipient of several awards and academic honors including two times felicitation by the former President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam for e-transformation of the University of Delhi as Director, Institute of Life long Learning in 2009 and for distinctive and outstanding contributions to Education with Capital Foundation National Award in 2011.

and quality of education. It would be highly desirable that we increase the gross enrolment ratio (GER) which at present is only around 23% and along with it increase the quality of education.

Role of university in shaping future technology Technology will have huge impact on the two major functions of a university on creating knowledge and disseminating knowledge in the 21st century. ICT enabled education in the form of e-learning and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is going to prove a game changer for higher education. Similarly ICT in the form of electronic databases is proving a boon for researchers. Our universities need to modify the current curriculum to cultivate student interest in innovation and research. The teachers should also, instead of promoting rote learning, must encourage thinking, innovation and creativity amongst the students. All this will go in a long way in shaping future technologies.

Innovative practices

Though teaching profession is not a very lucrative profession, I took up teaching for two reasons. Firstly, I have a unique ability to explain difficult topics in a very simple learner friendly manner which always helps me in teaching profession. Secondly, I believe teaching profession to be the only profession which gives you a unique opportunity and responsibility to transform the lives of the youth.

At PDM University, we believe in regulating and updating the curriculum and facilities to cater to the needs of the students for achieving quality and excellence in higher education. We also plan to set up Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) to review the quality dimensions of the university. Along with this, we emphasize on overall development of the students. Our university is committed to provide the students with ample opportunities to express and present their creativity and talent.

His Leadership style

Message for government

A man with positive attitude, good management and worked with determination to achieve his goals and never discourage with to meet the new challenges is a leader. Every challenge is an opportunity for me to prove myself. I believe in doing my best. If my action inspired others to dream more, learn more and achieve more then I may be called a leader.

India’s education system has expanded considerably during the last 70 years. At present we have more than 700 universities and 40,000 colleges. But despite all this, our GER is just 23%. Opening a new university or a college is not an easy task. Further there is an acute shortage of competent faculty in various colleges and universities. Taking this in view government needs to promote “Digital Education” with a focus on e-learning, MOOCs and virtual universities. With spread of technology, our teachers and students today are quite tech savvy. One can take advantage of their ICT skills for imparting learner centric digital education which is based on the motto of anytime, anywhere and anyone learning (3A’s). This virtual teaching learning approach is going to be the future of education in India as it has the potential to change the face of higher education in India.

Inclination towards teaching

Suggestions for aspiring teachers Teachers need to take teaching very seriously as their interaction with young students is going to make a big difference in their lives. Teacher affects eternity. Teaching is a unique blend of academic expertise with skills such as good communications, innovation, creativity and connectivity. Today, teachers need to be tech savvy.

Challenges in education system The biggest challenge in education sector in India today, especially in higher education is accessibility

Interview

Imparting Education Not Only For Sake

Dr. Arun Kumar Principal HIMS, Varanasi

Coming from farmer’s family, Dr. Arun Kumar spent his early days in a village of Bihar. He got his inspiration to become a doctor from his grandfather, who always wanted to see him as a doctor. He did his graduation in medical sciences from the then Prince of wales medical college, Patna, Bihar. Thereafter he did post-graduation in Anesthesiology. Being a strong believer of Guru- Shishiya Parampara, he believed that teaching is the noble profession and always fascinated about it from the very beginning. He feels that imparting knowledge is a challenging as well as satisfying job. In an interview with Leaders Speak, Dr. Arun Kumar shared his leadership quality and expresses his concern on disparity in Indian education system.

24 - January 2017 / Leaders Speak

www.leadersspeak.in

His Journey Started his career as a medical teacher in 1982. At present, Dr. Arun Kumar is working as Principal and Chief Medical Superintendent, HIMS Varanasi, UP. He also worked as Director and Vice Chancellor in Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna, Bihar.

and skill. The education system needs to be integrated in a timely manner to meet new skills needed. The critical component of industry linkage with formal education is missing in the Indian ecosystem. The government should formulate a system which insures the regular feedback from the industry and technical vocational education institutions.

His leadership style I always believed that good team work can do wonders. So the team leader should not only be capable but must have such inherited qualities to motivate and inspires the whole team. Unless and until the team members have confidence in their leader, they can’t give their best. I firmly believed that if you have faith in yourself and resolve to achieve what you intend to, then most of the times you can overcome the challenges. This is what I exactly practiced as director of IGMS. Initially they looked complex but I could find solution to most of them with discussion, persuasion and sometimes by using force within the frame work of rule and law. As regards leadership skill I do simply believe that to be a leader you should have the knowledge, dedication, ability to communicate effectively, capability and patience to listen to your criticisms and absorb the shock of failure along with always giving credit to the team and when situation arrives defend and protect the team members.

Achievement

Suggestion to young minds What I believe that field of medical sciences is totally a different field because its takes care of living human beings. This profession is also very demanding in terms of time and attention of the doctors. Before opting for this field they must evaluate themselves that whether they have the aptitude and patience for this field and whether they are really ready to dedicate themselves to the cause of the ailing mankind. A doctor must be sensitive to the misery of the patients and agony of their near and dear ones. Hence a little human touch along with good skill can do wonders.

Message to government Government must concentrate on providing good infrastructure along with qualified and component teachers who have the aptitude for teaching, otherwise we will just create an educated but no productive young masses.

View

My achievement can be described in two parts, as a trainer and teacher in my field of specialty and as a Senior Executive of super specialty hospital at Patna. As a teacher I guided many young students in their research and thesis leading to award of PG degrees and as Director and Vice Chancellor of Indra Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna.

Challenges Scarcity of qualified teaching members along with good infrastructure is the most important. Most of the government sector institutions do not have either of the two. Whereas in private sector institutions are too costly. Therefore we need good number of qualified teachers along with cost effective good infrastructure.

Skilling the unskilled The country has to gear up to meet the demand for skilled work-force. The important roadblock currently includes low women worker population ratio along with poor quality of education or a mismatch in the demand and supply of education

Restoring Opportunity

Dr Pankaj Gupta Professor, Vice Dean & Director (EMBA) Jindal Global Business School

By Shalini Shukla In an exclusive interview with Leaders Speak, Dr. Pankaj Gupta, Professor, Vice Dean & Director (EMBA) Jindal Global Business School has shared challenges & importance of teaching profession

26 - January 2017 / Leaders Speak

www.leadersspeak.in

Q: Tell us about the initial stage of your life and when did you become interested in teaching profession? A: I always had great admiration for my teachers who played an important role in my life. They were my role models. I noticed their selfless service and love for their students, which inspired me a lot – specially my early teachers such as Indrajeet Singh and Shashi Bhushan Pandey. Later, I started taking tuitions when I was only 16 year old and studying at class 12th with a view to support my studies and I found that experience very exciting and meaningful. Thus, I got attracted to teaching profession at quite an early stage in my life.

Q: What are driving forces behind your decision to go for the teaching profession? A: The joy of learning and sharing, making a difference in the lives of my students and the great respect and love from my students. In my 25 years of academic career, I feel great satisfaction and joy that my previous students are doing very well in every walk of life and have already reached top level positions in corporate, social sector, politics, academics etc. both nationally as well as internationally – and making a big difference in the world. They are still connected to me by facebook & linkedin and interacting with them and seeing them grow is a great joy which can not be explained. No other profession can give you this great inner joy and satisfaction.

Q: How would you describe your leadership style? What are some ways you have dealt with challenges, and how did you find solutions? A: A man with positive attitude, good management and My mantra is ‘work with full passion, dedication, awareness and ownership along with taking full care of one’s team and other stake holders’. Right motivation behind the work and ‘the being of self’ is very important. I always think of success only and donot think about any challenge as a challenge. Whenever any challenging situation comes, I take it head-on in full current awareness and without any baggage of past. When a problem is handled with an open mind and heart and with full understanding and awareness, then the problem itself dissolves and a win-win solution emerges without much effort or struggle.

Chancellor etc. and making a significant contribution to the success and growth of organizations I have served. I have won several awards such as ‘Notable Contribution to Profession Award’, “Most Innovative Idea of the Year Award’, ‘Rashtriya Shiksha Gaurav Award’ etc. A top International Search Firm identified me as one of the top ‘Academic Leaders in India’. IIM Ahmedabad wrote a case study highlighting few of transformative initiative taken by me. I also feel very happy and proud that I was Founding Director of two Institutions SIBM (Symbiosis) Bangalore and JRE (Educomp Raffles) Group and they are doing very well. SIBM Bangalore is doing exceptionally well and is now rated among the top-5 Business Schools in South India attracting about 18000 applications for its 180 seats – which is a rare achievement for a new Institution which was set up just in 2008. However, my biggest achievement rather joy is that I have my ex students in every part of the world and they are doing exceptionally well in every field.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for aspiring teachers? A: The biggest challenge in education sector in India Teachers should know it is a great privilege to be a teacher. They should take great pride in being a teacher and they should have great self respect no matter what others think about them. When they are fulfilled with self love and respect, they will take up their job very seriously and with passion – then fame, love, respect, money all will follow. Teachers are more powerful than any king – but they should believe in this and take appropriate actions to realize this vision. They should follow examples of great living teachers and researchers such as Dr. R. A. Mashelkar – who is a great inspiring role model highlighting the possibility what a great teacher can become. He also said ‘teacher should know how to convert ‘Saraswati ji’ (intellectual capital) into ‘Lakshmi ji’ (material wealth)’.

Q: How have you built leadership capacity in your institution ? What exactly are “leadership skills”?

Q: Tell us about your achievements?

A: Job of a true leader is to create more leaders by trusting, nurturing & empowering their team members and creating an enabling eco system in the organization. A leader who is secure from inside can only create such leaders. One of such finest academic leaders I have seen is Prof. C. Raj Kumar.

A: All achievements are only relative. I have a few humble achievements including being the Professor, Fulbright Scholar, Director, Director General, Vice

Q: Please share with us the initiatives undertaken by your organization ? What are the measures

www.leadersspeak.in

Leaders Speak / January 2017 - 27

taken to ensure quality education to the larger population? A: We follow a multi-disciplinary, research driven, industry centric and global approach to education. We also nurture social and life skills in our students, so that our students are ready not only for today’s requirement but they are future ready as well. We focus on national and international accreditations, quality assurance systems, faculty development and research to ensure good quality. Our students work with us as partners in learning and with our joint endeavor, we are able to generate enormous value for all stake holders.

Q: Is there any message for government to improve the education sector in India? A: Focus on creating good, passionate and self aware Gurus – and the whole academic eco system will transform on its own. Govt. must create a special select task force with people of great eminence and innovative ideas such as Prof. R . A. Mashelkar, Prof. Shyam Sunder (Yale), Prof. C. Raj Kumar ( JGU), Prof.

28 - January 2017 / Leaders Speak

Sri Sridharan (Kellogg), Prof. Kashi Ramanathan (Washington), Prof. Rishikesh Krishnan (IIM Indore), Prof. Vijaya Sherry Chand (IIM Ahmedabad) etc. and the select group be given required freedom and they can create innovative solutions to transform education sector in India. Prof. Shyam Sunder had created wonderful idea and road map for ‘From Grain revolution to Brain revolution’ and Prof. Kashi Ramanathan wanted to bring lot of Indian born top academics to India to conduct several capacity development programs / doctoral workshops in India, but their efforts went unnoticed due to apathy of earlier Governments. Now, is a time to take such wonderful initiatives to create a new India with new breed of innovatives and passionate Gurus who will make a difference in India and the world. There is also a big need to change how selections are made and performance is evaluated in Govt. education Institutions including IITs and IIMs. Good Private sector Institutions need special encouragement to become world class etc.

EDUCATION & NATIONAL POLICY

There will be no peace until happiness is equally distributed. May there be no one with much lavishness and may there be no one with scantiness.

By Dr. Arunodhay Kumar

32 - January 2017 / Leaders Speak

I

n today’s world as soon as you hear the word politics, a suspicious thought stirs somewhere in your mind; similarly a scene of a nasty and deadly debate appears when we think of nationalism. In simple words nationalism can be defined as loyalty and devotion to a nation, especially a sense of national consciousness exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations. Now, if we accept politics in its simplest sense, nationality and prosperity is nowhere. The world, politics is a blend of three Greek words Polis (State /City) Polity (Government) and Policia (Constitution) where there is an existence of stategovernment and constitution too. But prosperity is no where. Basically the word ‘politics’ is not an expression of nationality rather government Policy of a king or ruler of a specific city or area. Although ‘Nation’ is a comprehensive word in itself. Although it can be thought to be a synonymous terms for ‘State’ country or community but the real meaning of the word ‘nation’ is the mass of people and others of a particular piece of land. The uniformity of the people, language, tradition, character, thought collectively is called nation and continuous endeavor for their prosperity and excellence is national ethics. And the hearty and emotional acceptance of all their endeavors and thought in the real sense is nationalism. Calling nationality a specific thought, rule, or ethic is quite misleading in any view because it will be a blunder to see it in context of the principles of socialism, Gandhism, and Marxism. It is not at all appropriate to accept nationalism as slogans, movement or thoughts because it is the innermost consciousness/ feelings of the mass of a particular piece of land. We should never forget that relation of unity is not with thoughts but with emotions thus even if uniformity of thought is developed it might not last for ever but emotional unity is often long lasting. It means emotion is more important than thoughts to ensure national integrity, suppose there is no uniformity of thoughts among the members of a family but all the members unite when there is any trouble or crisis. This is true with nation too. Just because of this the Indians, forgetting all differences, presented the proof of amazing unity while fighting with China

www.leadersspeak.in

& Pakistan. It is very important that unity might be appropriate or inappropriate because as useful and fruitful things play an important role in uniting the nation similarly unfruitful and harmful objects also play a vital role in uniting the nation. As on one hand the statues of Shankracharya, Buddha and Gandhiji unite the nation on the other hand the betel nut of Kerala and Bihar also are able to connect/unite too for apart corners of the nation. Both have their roles in the diversified unity of our country-India. The matter of great worry is that a disgusting game is being played in the guise of nationalism. How painful it is that handful of selfish people are playing with the tender emotions of humble and weak people of this pious land of India, just for their selfishness. Nationality is an undivided emotion and nationalism is a consciousness but when we divide them into pieces and manipulate the words cultural nationalism, conceptual nationalism, Hindu nationalism according to our own choices and the consequence is that the innocent people of the country are bluffed and become directionless. Gandhiji rightly evaluated our meanness. It was his concern that everyone talks about their personal benefit but no one is concerned about the nation. If people of Punjab, Bihar or Gujrat consider a specific piece of land as their own then who does this country belong to? Does today’s Politics want to begin communalism and confined nationality by giving more importance to regionalism? Are we desirous of creating Indian picture same as that before independence and moreover desirous of dividing the nation in to six hundred kingdoms and state and spoil the endeavor of Ballabh Bhai Patel? Before independence when there were kingdoms and at that time Politics and kings were required to run state but when all these small states were combined to make one nation then how is it possible to reign today’s nation with the politics of those days? Because nationality is needed to run a country and not politics, and today there is no king so assumption of politics is meaningless. I think it is our own principles in the root which is working superficially e.g. caste, religion etc in the guise of politics. We make different principles for diminishing a particular class, caste or a specific region and different for the remaining others, such principles are neither scientific nor practical. The worst condition is that of our education system. Today there are as many syllabi and Education boards in the country as states, and the fact is this

Leaders Speak / January 2017 - 33

that in a single state there are almost 8 to 10 boards which have their own curricula as per their own choice. Alone in Bihar there are many boards and in the other so called developed states condition is even worse. We are experiencing dire consequences of their different syllabi and education Policies. Suppose a boy, who is getting education under a board of Rajasthan, is well aware of the eminence and patriotism of Maharana Pratap, but does not know Veer Kunwar Singh, will there be same honor and respect/reverence for Veer Kunwar Singh in his heart later? Same is applicable in the context of boys who are under the syllabi of Gujrat, Bengal, Orissa and Kerala. And the clash or rift becomes inevitable when people of different mentalities (because of different syllabi of a state) assemble on a centre stage and they try to prove their syllabi stronger and more practical. We must think about the reason why antinational slogans in the big universities are common today? Isn’t it the different education system or just because of different ideologies we do not consider them antinationalism. Argumentation, fact and analysis are different things. Therefore here this hint will be enough that our leaders should go above the selfish benefit and must introspect. We talk of full sovereignty and single nation but how come is it possible to think that people who have come out

34 - January 2017 / Leaders Speak

from different national and regional boards of 29 states of the country can think of single nation. Basically when a person is obsessed with different education, community and culture he can never think of uniformity of nation. The fact is that although we have got freedom but the work of English slavery is stilly pestering us. Instead of finding the positive aspects of our tradition and ancient culture we are gazing toward west. As far as scientific development is concerned it is alright to adopt the techniques of others but for spiritual uplift we have to suck sap from our root. Today our politics is nothing but greed of power and satisfying one’s selfishness and not at all in the interest of nation. To go so low without caring for one’s self respect just for vote bank is neither politics not patriotism. The fact is that this is nothing more than a compromise with one’s morality. In the age of downfall power lies in organization but it does not mean that by any means we can organize to win the heart of nation (mass). The fact is that the power of a nation lies in itself, and the spirit of freedom, uniformity and fraternity is indispensable for its acquisition and management. Therefore real nationalism is that where cooperation, care and prosperity for all lie. And that speech or ideology is real patriotism in which prosperity for all is at the top. According to Dinkar (a renowned Hindi Poet.)
