Fostering a sustainable PMO - Breaking the Boom/Bust Cycle The constantly evolving landscape of the PMO is often marked by disruptions that can ultimately affect successful delivery outcomes, particularly when dealing with the boom/bust cycle that often accompanies a PMO. To remain competitive and succeed in this dynamic landscape, breaking out of that disruptive cycle, PMO leaders must focus on sustainable strategy and maturity, innovation, and using superior stakeholder management to build the influence needed to generate organisational buy-in for the long-term. Taking a proactive approach to communicating and defining their value, PMO leaders must develop key goals that easily engage stakeholders, build effective coaching techniques to drive change and learn to build strong relationships across the organisation. This full-day, interactive workshop will explore best-practice techniques to strengthen PMO longevity. Our expert facilitator, Georgina Rowe, will provide practical insights to improve stakeholder relationships, expand your leadership influence and establish sustainable, long-term innovative change. Through her hands-on approach, learn the tools necessary for you to lead a successful, proactive and long-lasting PMO. Building a sustainable approach to projects, programs and portfolios • Understanding the boom/bust lifecycle of the PMO • Establishing and maintaining key strategic plans • Building on success and bouncing back from failure Defining and communicating the ongoing value of the PMO • Strategies for effective communication • Developing key influencing and negotiating skills • Engaging stakeholders across all levels of the organisation Developing your individual approach to leadership • Authentic vs adaptive leadership • Fostering a culture of collaboration • Building and maintaining credibility Evolving your PMO - Making innovation a priority • Effective strategies for determining critical tasks • Overcoming objections and obstacles • Identifying and leveraging your team’s strengths

Expert Facilitator: Georgina Rowe Project Management Capability Consultant Georgina Rowe Independent Consultant Georgina is a Certified Practising Project Director and an experienced consultant, trainer and workshop facilitator who has worked with clients from a range of industries including local government, banking and finance, mining, telecommunications, construction, and community groups. Her focus is on identifying gaps in project management performance, process and capability including project maturity project reviews. With a focus on continuous improvement and innovative solution solving Georgina specialises in delivering energised and focused workshops for the development of skills and knowledge in the project environment. Two areas of workshop focus are: Project Governance, where Georgina works with project governance boards to identify effective but time efficient project governance practices; and business benefits management which are still neglected areas of project/program management. Georgina works within a number of project methodologies and frameworks to identify the best approach to project performance for the organisation and the project. However, like many, Georgina has recognised that while methodologies and frameworks can provide a solid baseline for a project, success depends on leadership and stakeholder management, both within and outside of the broader stakeholder community and this includes the coaching and management of team performance.

Defining critical skills of the future PMO

Day One

22 August 2017

11.45 - 12.20 EXPERT COMMENTARY

Defining your journey - Establishing long-term strategic plans

2017 Theme: ‘Leading the future PMO’

A successful PMO needs to have the forethought to create a long-term plan and the conviction to stay on track through challenges and periods of change. Without these key ingredients, any PMO will suffer from the boom/bust lifecycle that’s all too common. Drawing on key industry experience, Jon will explore how you can create a long term plan and lead your PMO down the path to ongoing success. Jon will discuss: • How you define your long-term objectives • Understanding the measurements of success • The pendulum effect • Building and controlling momentum in line with expectations

The future is beckoning, bringing with it a new generation of technology, methodologies and innovative strategies that can be leveraged to improve PMO performance and sustainability in our organisations. A successful PMO will lead its organisation though this change, balancing traditional procedures with modern methods that match stakeholder attitudes and behaviours. But what does a PMO need to achieve these outcomes? How does it maintain its relevance for the future? This forum will address these question and much more.

In this session, Yvonne will reflect on her successful career across public, private and not for profit sectors, exploring: • The strategic context of the modern PMO • How PMOs add value • The lifecycle of the PMO

PMOs are in a constant state of flux, accountable for managing the responsibilities of projects, budgets, benefits and people. Changing the perception of the PMO away from a temporary body to a valuable core requires an active approach to defining and re-defining its purpose and value proposition as objectives are achieved. Drawing on his experience at AGL, Mark will discuss: • Centralising core business processes • Demonstrating value through the PMO • Aligning strategy and objectives

Establishing credibility - Leading by example in the PMO

Establishing credibility is an essential part of leading a PMO. Without credibility the task of strategically aligning objectives, benefits and projects is an impossible task. Just as an organisation relies on their PMO to lead their projects, programs and portfolios; the PMO also relies on those above and below to trust their direction. In this case study, Wayne will explore: • What credibility really means • Strategies to help you lead by example • Dealing with and resolving conflict

More than ever, organisations are seeking to make themselves more efficient and ultimately more effective. To lead this process, PMOs must incorporate new and innovative procedures. In this session, our esteemed panelists will draw on their own careers to explore the newest and most current methods, including: • Agile PMO - Is it the way of the future? • How to drive value in a sustainable PMO • Implementing change for the long-term

Concluding Remarks from the Chair and Summit Close

ABOUT THE EVENT More than ever, today’s PMOs are seeking to rise above the boom/bust cycle that threatens their own sustainability and the productivity of their organisation’s operations. Incorporating new methodologies, including agile techniques and operational transformations, will position the PMO for ongoing success as trailblazers of their organisation’s objectives and strategic alignment. A leader’s focus determines the reality of their team’s success, by driving productivity, efficiency and incorporating new techniques to achieve excellence through delivery. To add real value and cement a sustainable future within the organisation, PMO leaders must develop this focus alongside a culture of adaptability and flexibility, which is essential to transition smoothly through a volatile environment. The 4th PMO Leadership Summit 2017 creates a forum for leaders and professionals in the PMO, project, program and portfolio space to discuss strategic techniques and experiences that are key to overcoming challenges and disruptions that threaten the role and value of the PMO. This event will provide the platform for participants to learn from, interact and network with high-performing PMO leaders and professionals across all industries, major corporations and government departments.
