The City Apprenticeship Programme Apprenticeships in the City An Apprenticeship is a training programme which mixes real work with training. Apprentices are employed by a company, earning a wage and gaining experience whilst learning the practical skills needed for their job. The length of an Apprenticeship depends upon the degree of specialist skills that the Apprentice is required to learn: a Business Administration Apprentice can be achieved within 12 months, but a Surveying Apprentice takes two years to be trained.

Apprenticeships – Good for Business Apprenticeships are good for business: 80% of employers who employ Apprentices currently agree they make the workplace more productive and 81% of consumers favour a company that takes them on. Not only are Apprentices good for business but they ensure trained, hard working staff are prepared for the real world of business now and for the future.

What does the City Apprenticeship programme offer employers? In addition to covering the costs of training, our service is able to offer employers a package that includes: • Advertising the vacancy • Initial screening of candidates • An Induction and ongoing mentoring support • Training the Apprentices on a day-release basis • Teaching Literacy and Numeracy skills where needed • Assessing Apprentices’ progress. • A memorable Graduation in the City of London’s prestigious premises

Pre-Apprenticeships Are you 16-18 years old and don’t quite have the qualifications and/or employability skills needed to start an Apprenticeship, then a pre-apprenticeship is for you!

Contact us If you are an employer, or someone interested in becoming an Apprentice or Trainee, and you want to find out more information then please contact our Apprenticeship team on: 020 7332 1212 or 020 7332 3209. English & Maths SpEC

Speaking English with Confidence Volunteering programme in the ESOL sector Good for Individuals, Good for Communities The Speaking English with Confidence (SpEC) project is helping improve the lives of local people by developing a network of language clubs all over London. Led by trained volunteers and delivered in venues at the heart of the community such as schools, libraries, children’s centres and places of worship, this project helps London residents from all backgrounds who have little or no English come together and make friends from outside their immediate family or community. Learning for as little as two hours a week in a relaxed environment helps promote health, happiness and builds stronger communities. Volunteering Opportunities Volunteering with SpEC is a great opportunity to help improve the lives of people across London while developing valuable skills. All our SpEC volunteers are offered a place on a training programme, which equips them with the relevant skills to lead their own conversation club. As a volunteer, you’ll also have the opportunity to accredit your training to gain a City & Guild Level 3 Award in Learning Support. You will learn about effective facilitation techniques, build relationships within a professional network and gain an insight into possible pathways into community development and teaching. In return, we ask that all volunteers commit to

Speaking English with Confidence

delivering a minimum of 30 hours of club time within their local community. There are a number of opportunities to join our volunteer training course throughout the year. If you are interested, please get in touch for more information on how to get involved. French Advanced Conversation

The course aims to build on learners’ understanding of listening and reading skills gained from a beginner’s course and improve confidence in speaking. The emphasis will be on improving conversational fluency in social and more formal situations. Grammatical constructions will be revised and further developed. This is for people who have completed a year long French Beginners course or equivalent.

This course is aimed at learners who wish to maintain and improve their conversational skills and fluency in French. A wide range of subjects and issues will be covered through reading texts (including poetry), doing comprehensions, translations and debating or discussing a topic. At the end of most sessions written homework is set for the next session, and there may be a research project set which is shared in class at the end of term. This may be a topic or about a person chosen by the learner. This is an advanced level course and learners need to have good fluency in French.
