Spring 2016

Leslie Barns is home to Toronto’s new low-floor, accessible streetcars. The TTC undertakes daily maintenance at the newest streetcar facility, including: sanding, sweeping, vehicle washing and preventative maintenance to keep the new streetcar fleet moving. TTC crews perform all required repairs, painting and overhauls of the new streetcar fleet at the Barns. Designed by Strasman Architects Inc and engineered by AECOM, Leslie Barns also serves as a training centre for operators and will house a state-of-the-art operating simulator.

On Sunday, November 22, 2015, the new streetcars began regular service from the Leslie Barns facility.

Landscaping Upgrades In early April, landscaping work began around Leslie Barns. Toronto-based firm Brown & Storey Architects with STLAi designed the landscaping plan that includes hundreds of plantings and new trees. The acoustic wall outside the Barns will be transformed with red decorative panels and greenery. Two large full-height viewing panels will be installed, one on Lake Shore Boulevard, and one on Leslie Street.

Streetscaping Improvements An important component of the project is streetscaping upgrades, including sidewalk widening to improve accessibility, new street lighting and installation of the Leslieville BIA’s new benches. Corners of Queen Street East at Leslie Street, Hastings Avenue, Curzon Street and Rushbrooke Avenue were upgraded to include new pavers, tree plantings and seating.

Doors Open Toronto 2016 Please join the TTC as we open the doors to Leslie Barns as part of this year’s city wide Doors Open Toronto 2016, presented by Great Gulf. The Barn’s doors will open on Saturday May 28, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., providing the community with an opportunity to peek inside the newly opened facility. During the event, visitors will be able to take a streetcar tour of the grounds and view a display of vintage streetcars. Inside the Operator’s Lounge will be the children’s activity table, a TTC-inspired Lego display and a subway simulator computer game
