GET THE WORD OUT – TO AUSTRALIA! HI THERE! Are you ready for your all-Aussie adventure? We’re going to go exploring around our very own country to see all the places that the Bible is used and the difference it makes in people’s lives. This year, we’ll be getting the word out to people all around Australia – and it’s a big job.

Did you know… Australia is about 7.7 million km2 in size. That makes us the 6th biggest country in the world! Australia has three times more sheep than people! Kangaroos and emus can’t walk backward

But first, what’s Get The Word Out about? Very simple – it’s about getting the word (the Bible) out to all kinds of people. Bible Society translates Bibles, prints them and distributes them all around this country (and other countries!). Over the next few pages, you’ll learn how you can help Bible Society Get The Word Out to Australia.

So… how much do you know about Australia?

The Great Barrier Reef is the biggest structure on the whole Earth made by living creatures Believe it or not… in winter, Australia has more snow than Switzerland! Wow! So you can see… it’s a BIG and colourful country! Getting the Bible to all 24 million people living here can be a challenge. But you and your group can help Bible Society do a lot in 2017!

Did you know that the Bible is called the Good Book? Why do you think that is? The Bible is called the Good Book because it does such good things in people’s lives.

The Word of God is good because: It tells us all about the amazing things Jesus did for us

It tells us the story of how God created the whole world

It tells us how special and precious we are to God

BRINGING THE WORD TO SCHOOLS

There are lots of kids just like you in schools around the country. Can you picture them now? Some are in schools near the beach, some are in the middle of the desert. Some are in small country towns, others are in big city schools with hundreds of students. But do you know that some have never seen a Bible, or heard about Jesus? This year, you have a chance to help them hear and read the word of God. That’s right, YOU can make a difference in THIS country when your group fundraises to Get The Word Out.

You’re going to help people like Allan and Dawn Peacock who teach Scripture classes in primary schools. Before Bible Society stepped in to help, they had to photocopy pages of the Bible and hand them out to students. Bible Society provided them with free Bibles to use in their classes. What a difference! Their students love the Big Rescue Bible and find it exciting to be able to explore the whole Bible for themselves.

Can you help? Think of what you can do to raise money for Bibles – like selling lemonade! Split up the activities and set yourself a goal. It’s going to be fun! See page 10 and 11.

Pray For your fundraising idea – that God would bless it and help you out.

THE GOOD BOOK IN A HEART LANGUAGE Imagine growing up with one language that you spoke at home and another language that you had to speak out on the street, in the shops and at school. That’s what it’s like for many Indigenous Australian children in remote communities. They know some English but they have another ‘heart language’ that they grow up with and which they use around family. Do you think you would want to read the Bible if it wasn’t in a language you understood well?

Discuss with your group: How can you help the Bible Society pro vide God’s word in more Indigenous languages?

Jesus had a heart language, too! It was called Aramaic. When he was on the cross, he called out to his Father saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani”. What do those words mean? Look at Matthew 27:46 or Mark 15:34 and write your answer below:

In the story below from Matthew’s Gospel there are words which are not found in Australian Aboriginal languages. These words are in bold type and underlined. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to collect his fruit. Matthew 21:33-34 Write each underlined word below, then draw a line to what you think it refers to in the same story to the right. (The story has been translated back into English from the Murrinhpatha language which is spoken at Wadeye in the Northern Territory). l and o w n e r

This is the story about a boss who planted many grape seeds on his land. And after that he stacked up rocks surrounding it. And he made a hole in a rock to squash (by foot) the juice (of the grapes). And he also stacked rocks high up for a man to watch out to see if anyone might steal those grapes. After that he left that garden for other men to look after and he went off to another place. Later on when those grapes were ripe, he sent his men to collect a share of that fruit.

How do you think you would do at translation? Can you match the English words with these words from some Aboriginal communities? Boorie-Boy Cooee-Come here Deadly-Great or Awesome Lingo-Language Mob-Family or group of people Moola-Money Yabber-Talk Yakka-Work Answers

CHAPLAINS LIGHTING THE WAY WITH THE GOOD BOOK Walking in the Light We’re so privileged to have the word of God in our lives. We’re also blessed to have chaplains to help us understand its wisdom and bring us comfort from the Bible when we need it.

Get together in groups of 4 or more for this activity. You will need: a blindfold, small objects on a table like paperclips, spoons, plastic cups, and a stopwatch. You’re going to create an obstacle course. Then, in pairs, you’re going to do the following:

Try 1: With their partner shouting out instructions like ‘left’, ‘right’, and ‘straight’. Try 2: With their partner taking their hand and guiding them through. Use the stopwatch to time each try. Which was faster?

Make sure you’re both seated at the table. Set up a mini obstacle course of objects on the table, and choose one object that will have to get through it. Blindfold one person, who will have to try and move the object through the obstacle course without bumping anything. They’ll have two different tries.

When you did the activity: Try 1 was like trying to understand the Bible all by yourself – good, but… Try 2 was better, wasn’t it? That’s because we sometimes need help to understand the instructions in God’s Good Book!

Where do you think you’d meet a chaplain? You’re probably thinking – “at school” – and you’re right! But that’s not the only place.

Chaplains in Hospitals Hospitals are places where doctors and nurses do their very best to help, but sometimes sad things still happen. Young kids can find out that they will be sick for a very long time or that they won’t be able to play like they used to. Chaplains in hospitals visit sick kids and their families. They pray with people and show them that God is always good – no matter what the situation looks like. We know the Good Book is wonderful at encouraging people and is full of God’s love – so let’s Get The Word Out in hospitals together. Chaplains speak to people about the word of God every single day, right across Australia. It’s really important that they have Scriptures to give away in their work. Your group fundraising activities will help to get Bibles into the hands of chaplains so that they can provide the hope of God’s word to others. Take a look at Pages 10 and 11 for some fun group fundraising ideas! If you were writing a letter to someone your age in hospital, what would you say? Choose one of these three scriptures and use it in an encouraging note as if  you’re writing to someone who is sick in hospital:

Psalm 30:2 “Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.” Jeremiah 17:14 “Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved.” Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Did you know that what you just did is the kind of thing a chaplain does every day to encourage people? Well done! When you help to get Bibles into people’s hands, they can encourage others too. It can change sadness into happiness, and also give people hope (which is looking forward to good things in the future). Isn’t that powerful?

CAN YOU HELP OTHER CHILDREN IN AUSTRALIA GET TO KNOW THE GOOD BOOK? Here are some great fundraising ideas! Guess the Jellybeans Fill a big jar with jellybeans (remember to count them in first!) Anyone who makes a donation can take a guess at how many jellybeans are in the jar, and write the amount on a scrap of paper (together with their name). Whoever comes closest at the end of the competition wins the jar of jellybeans!

Bake off Why not try your hand at baking, with an adult to supervise? Make cupcakes, muffins or other desserts and ask if you can sell them at school or church to raise funds.

Movie Night Ask your church or school if you can run a movie night – screen a film and have popcorn and drinks available to purchase. All funds raised from ticket sales can go towards your fundraising gift.

Trash and Treasure Get together with your group and see if you have old toys, games or clothes to sell (check with your parents – they might also have things they can add!) Then run a garage sale together. It’s a great way to get rid of all that extra stuff you aren’t using any more and help some amazing kids at the same time.

Make your own DIY Bath Bombs…and sell them! You will need

(You can find the first six at the supermarket.) 1 cup baking soda 1/2 cup citric acid 1/2 cup Epsom salts 2 tsp. essential oil 3 tsp. oil (olive oil) food colouring (any colour you want) 1 tsp. water bowl, whisk and jar bath bomb mould* Place the dry ingredients in a bowl and then mix them all evenly with the whisk. In a separate container, mix the liquid ingredients together. Slowly add the liquid mixture to the dry mix, one small spoon at a time.

When well mixed, you simply pack this mixture into a bath bomb mould* and pack tightly, then let it dry. Work quickly so the mixture doesn’t dry out. Would you like to do more fun activities? Ask your teachers for more! (Teachers, please download Lesson Plans from biblesociety.org.au/gtwo2017) * You don’t need to buy special moulds – just use muffin baking trays, lined with cling wrap – simple!
