An Escape Room is a live-action game in which participants are locked in a room full of clues that must be found and puzzles that must be solved in order to get out within a set time limit. Most have a theme or back story to make the experience a bit more immersive. Teams of six to eight participants were led to the escape room located in a portable classroom where they attempted to solve various puzzles in 20 minutes. The classroom was decorated with old desks, strategically placed locks, and various school supplies that added to The Classroom Escape Room ambiance. This room’s backstory was about classroom prankster, Jimmy DiFranco, who has hidden a stash of pranks throughout the classroom. Student Activities continued This challenge was created through a camp hosted by Eric Ista, co-owner of The Fargo Escape Room, and the Lewis & Clark Parent Teacher Association, which was held in June. During this two-week camp, students used 21st Century Skills of creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication to imagine and construct their Escape Room. “This camp was a reaffirmation that inspiration comes from anywhere; get out into the world and see what your imagination does for you,” Ista said. “Students learned to approach problems in a different way. The experience as a whole was the perfect fit for STEM.” On Thursday night, attendees solved some of the puzzles as Ista, Nolan Roy-Tougas, and Peter Sambo watched and gave hints.

During the 2018-19 school year, the fourth-grade students who participated in this camp will open the room to other students to see if they can utilize their 21st Century Skills to escape The Classroom.
