CENTRE FOR ENGLISH LEARNING AND TEACHING

LEXICAL TEACHING CONFERENCE SATURDAY 11 MAY 2013 10AM – 4PM, FYVIE HALL, 309 REGENT STREET, UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER

WHY SHOULD I ATTEND? The conference celebrates the 20th anniversary of the publication of Michael Lewis’s ‘The Lexical Approach’ and the teaching of lexis. A lexical approach to learning languages emphasises the importance of being able to understand and produce collocations, lexical phrases and chunks of language that frequently occur in conversation and writing. It emphasises exemplifying vocabulary as it is used with grammar. The conference will introduce you to the lexical approach and developments in recent years and consider lexical teaching in areas such as EAP and exams, teaching the four skills, modern languages and teacher training as well as providing practical techniques and tasks for the classroom. With ever increasing numbers of students requiring high levels of English for work and study, more than ever there is a need for teachers to understand and teach lexis well. WHAT WILL THE CONFERENCE ENABLE ME TO DO? This one day Saturday conference will enable you to: • Explore how lexical approaches to language teaching may improve learning outcomes – especially at lower levels and in skills development • Consider vocabulary choice and how to exploit vocabulary better in materials and word lists • Learn some practical techniques immediately applicable to the classroom • Make use of online sources and technology for teaching and learning vocabulary • Learn how lexical approaches can work in IELTS, EAP, CLIL and other specialist settings • Make links between modern language teaching and ELT and discuss the value of translation.

EVENT OUTLINE Key note presentations from: • Professor Michael Hoey, Baines professor of English Language and Pro-Vice Chancellor for Internationalisation, University of Liverpool. Author of Lexical Priming and Patterns of Lexis in Texts, on insights into teaching language from the experience of a lexical approach to learning Chinese. • Hugh Dellar, Senior Lecturer in ELT at the University of Westminster and author of the course book series Outcomes and Innovations, on teaching grammar lexically and the value of a lexical approach. There will be a series of workshop sessions by writers and teachers which address their own experience of teaching vocabulary and using lexical approaches. Workshops will cover a variety of aspects of teaching vocabulary and include practical ideas and strategies for teaching and teacher training.
