Intended Audience: Mental health providers, social workers, counselors, physical health providers, within UnityPoint and in the community.

Purpose: To educate mental and physical health care professionals on best practice when providing mental health care to patients within the LGBTQ community.

Educational Objectives: Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to: 1. Increase understanding of sexual identity and sexual orientation. 2. Examine ways to help clients navigate issues regarding sexual orientation and the “coming out” process. 3. Increase understanding of gender identity, gender expression, and gender dysphoria. 4. Describe the WPATH standards of care for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and gender affirming surgery. 5. Examine the assessment procedures and how to write letters of support for individuals seeking HRT or gender affirming surgery.

Presented By: Jacob B. Priest, Ph.D., LMFT is an assistant professor of Couple and Family Therapy and the Director of the LGBTQ Clinic in the College of Education at the University of Iowa.

Registration & Cost: No fee for first 30 registrants. Subsequent registrants will incur a fee of up to $10 if requesting CEUs or a certificate of attendance. Please direct all other questions regarding the training to Libby Fry.

Credit: This program has been approved for 0.45 CEUs through Allen College, Iowa Board of Nursing provider #127 and 3.75 social work CEUs through NASW-Iowa Chapter. Participants must attend the entire session to receive credit.
