devices to work. Please use this area if you need to charge up your devices – there are power points and USB connections available on the bench tops.

We are taking this opportunity to move the shelves a little and create a sitting space for our Mt Claremont Library users.

We would like to remind you not to leave your valuables unattended. Please take them with you because there is no assurance they will be there on your return.

We are looking forward to this minor revamp. The library re-opens on Saturday 30 June. At Nedlands Library, we had a little revamp on the mezzanine level. The study carols were removed and a new long work bench was installed. This is very popular – students study here and adults set up their laptops and mobile

We are busily planning adult and children’s events for the rest of the year. Watch out for our upcoming Subjects of Note booklet. Don’t miss out on the exciting events by reserving your place before they get booked out. – Nedlands and Mt Claremont Library staff

Nedlands: from naughty to natty with Anthea and Ro

Edward Bruce planned to make Nedlands Park an attractive holiday destination with its swimming baths, hotel and tea-houses – but the area was soon given the moniker ‘Naughty Nedlands’ by the press. Larrikins who hired the Carnaby boats were largely to blame for this but, when the hot pool was created further along the foreshore, the naughtiness continued. In attempts to gentrify the area, developers coined the term ‘Natty Nedlands’ – but does this reflect the changes in the community? Join our Local Studies Librarians, Anthea and Ro, on an exploration of the different facets of Nedlands’ history, both naughty and nice. Wednesday 22 August 10.30 am – 11.30 am Nedlands Library Free event. Bookings essential at nedlands.evanced.info/signup

Enter Darren Lomman, who has set out to create WA’s first waste plastic reprocessing facility. If you are passionate about recycling, then this talk is for you. After six months of extensive on-the-ground research and hundreds of meetings and phone calls, Darren was unable to find a single waste plastic reprocessing facility in WA. This meant not a single plastic bottle put in a recycling bin in WA was being reprocessed here in WA. Instead, most of it was being sold on the international waste market where its future is less than certain. In response, Darren established a new social enterprise in 2017 called Greenbatch, which is addressing the issue by building WA’s very first waste plastic reprocessing facility. The first product planned is 3D printer filament made from recycled PET plastic beverage bottles, enabling anyone with a 3D printer to make things out of recycled bottles at home or school. It is 1945 and London is still reeling from the Blitz and years of war. Fourteenyear-old Nathaniel and his sister Rachel are apparently abandoned by their parents, left in the care of an enigmatic figure named The Moth. They suspect he might be a criminal and both grow more convinced and less concerned as they get to know his eccentric crew of friends – men and women with a shared history, all of whom seem determined now to protect and educate Rachel and Nathaniel. But are they really what and who they claim to be? A dozen years later, Nathaniel begins to uncover all he didn’t know or understand in that time and it is this journey – through reality, recollection, and imagination – told in this magnificent novel. 60-64 Stirling Highway. New Local Studies workshop:

Trove searching and fixing mistakes Trove is a database from the National Library of Australia that has a huge number of digitised newspapers. Volunteers fix the mistakes made by a computer in reading the articles. Would you enjoy searching for and fixing up Trove newspaper articles with like-minded people? We are planning workshops on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 10 am to 12 pm in Nedlands Library, starting 25 July. You’ll be guided in your search strategies and topics, so don’t worry. Just enjoy and share the funny or interesting things you discover. For example, the crazy computer reading of the article to the right from 1910 is: THE SWIMMING HAITIS AT NEDLANDS l’A UK. carefree’) and in “Houses and Land for Sale”, as shown in the next articles. GOING TO TEA Nedlands folk are tripping abroad these days, the latest to go towards the “tea” island, Ceylon [Sri Lanka], being Mr. and Mrs. Forestal, who are accompanied by the Mr. and Mrs. W. Foy. The Colombo and Java trips are becoming quite common amongst our folk, and all who go seem to enjoy the experience immensely.

Local Studies Librarian Anthea Harris recently came across an article referring to “Natty Nedlands”. “I kind of like this little article,” Anthea said. “Especially the reference to ‘plenty of jolly girls’ and the Enid Blyton afternoon teas. Presumably it was aimed at single young men? Natty Nedlands is an attempt at gentrification of the Naughty Nedlands .” The following is from page four of Perth’s Sunday Mirror, dated 28 November 1920: NATTY NEDLANDS An air of prosperity (to say nothing of the river breeze) encompasses Natty Nedlands. Substantial dwellings and shops are being erected all round the place. The trip by tram through Crawley, and return via Suby, makes a pleasant outing by itself. Add to this, calm bathing water and fine shallow beaches for the women and children to revel in, and what more could you desire. Everything you need for bathing, and plenty of jolly girls at Nedlands Baths. Lennox, late of Cottesloe, has everything up to date there. After your swim, a nice cool drink from the new soda fountain at Mrs. Thomas’s place, a cold luncheon, and salad, with a nice fresh pot of tea and some home-made cakes and scones just to fill up. And all your worries have vanished. Mrs. Thomas has erected a most comfortable tearooms and makes a special feature of picnic catering at a moment’s notice. More references to Natty Nedlands crop up in “Gay Gossip from Saucy Suzanne” (when the word ‘gay’ more commonly meant ‘light-hearted and

NATTY NEDLANDS Mrs Harold Deands, of Nedlands, is at present entertaining Miss Florinda Wilson, of Sydney, in her pretty new home at Nedlands. Nedlands these days bids fair to rival “New Jerusalem” in the number and architectural beauty of its pretty residences.

If you can’t read the above, it says: “A Natty Nedlands home, with view of river: Lounge, DR, 2 bedrooms, kitchen, wide verandah, [unreadable], gas (heater and stove), X-acre, laid out lawns etc, Brick garage. £1,050 [you get the idea...]

Staff picks The accidental sorcerer by K.E. Mills Gerald is not a very good wizard; in fact, he’s more of a bureaucrat and a paper pusher. But when an ordinary staff factory inspection goes horribly, disastrously wrong, Gerald is fired and contemplating a life without magic. His friend finds him a position as a Royal Wizard instead, in a tiny monarchy that most consider unimportant. However, working for King Lional may be more trouble than Gerald has ever expected he could get himself into! – Lisa

Tracker: stories of Tracker Tilmouth by Alexis Wright Don’t be put off by the thickness of the book – this is an enthralling (and not too difficult) read, delving into the life and works of the legendary Tracker Tilmouth, arguably Australia’s most influential Aboriginal political and economical visionary, and his ideas on how to boost the Indigenous community into the economic market. – Nadege

Warcross by Marie Lu

I absolutely loved this book! Emika Chen is a bounty hunter, analyst and hacker. But, like most teenagers, she’s struggling to make ends meet. Warcross is not just a video game – it’s a way of life... why live in a world you hate when you can escape reality altogether? A futuristic cyberthriller with fun characters, an addictive plotline full of video game mayhem and, like any well-written book, it leaves you on a cliffhanger. – Teagan

First explorers by Karin Cox Good solid Australian history resource by accredited author. Older style presentation but informative text, plenty of photographs and simple to follow layout. Best features include representative coverage across the whole continent, ‘Did you know?’ fun facts, ‘Timeline of Discovery’, glossary of terms, activities page and ‘Want to know more?’ section with further reading and websites. A very useful and enjoyable resource for all young Australians. – Ro

Night of the moon: a Muslim holiday story by Hena Khan

A charming short story with beautiful illustrations. Night of the Moon takes us through the month of Ramadan, exploring the traditions of this holiday period with Yasmeen and her family. – Caris

Pygmalion (Audiobook) by Bernard Shaw The inspiration for the musical My Fair Lady can be clearly heard in this play and it works amazingly well as sound only, without the visual clues given by stage and film. The actors, including British celebrities Imelda Stanton and Simon Cadell, make the 1912 script come vividly alive with their excellent performances. An enjoyable and different listening experience! – Anthea 60-64 Stirling Highway. Nedlands WA 6009 | 9273 3644 | [email protected] | nedlands.wa.gov.au

The man from U.N.C.L.E (DVD) Definitely my favourite action-packed spy movie. CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB agent IIIya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) are forced to put aside their differences and team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organisation. Their only way of infiltrating the criminal organisation is through the daughter of a vanished German scientist, whom they must find to stop a nuclear catastrophe. – Teagan

Anatomy of a scandal by Sarah Vaughan Couldn’t put this one down – an excellent, gripping courtroom drama that makes you guess and second-guess every character. An interesting look at morality and the double standards of English-university-upper-class entitlement. A popular read, currently being devoured by bookclubs. – Nadege
