Dear Fellow Lions Family Members: WE belong to the happy Family of Lions – we thought this was the case before I became District Governor, however, now we are convinced of it. Usha and I have been made to feel most welcome in all our visits and we are continually amazed at the wonderful work that you are all doing in your close community, in the Lions community and overseas. We are thrilled to visit Clubs and meet our friends and get to know them better. We are also thrilled with the wonderful fellowship that has been shown to us. What could potentially be a ‘chore’ is indeed a great pleasure for both of us. Unfortunately President Ken Daff, President of my Club passed away on 13th August 2013. Ken has been President of my Club for 15 years continuously (with two year break when it was occupied by me). He is a Life Member of the Lions Clubs International. He was a very dedicated Lion with a very large heart and we certainly miss him now and will continue to do so. Our condolences are with Shirley and family. Our AGM and Convention is upon us this month. We have ID Sangeeta Jatia and PID AP Singh from Constitutional Area 6 as keynote speakers. I am sure all of us will be motivated and inspired by them. PCC

Lou will address us on the topic of membership. We must listen and follow his ideas. Also we are pleased to present other speakers who will arouse our senses and indulge our interest. We are delighted to welcome Lion Frank Sethi from Thailand as our Operation Friendship guest. He belongs to Lions Club of Saraphi in Chiangmai, Thailand – one of the very active Clubs in his District. My thanks to Marysville and District Lions Club, for shouldering the responsibility of holding our AGM and Convention. I am sure we will have a wonderful weekend. Boost for students A SOUVENIR booklet is being produced and distributed at our Convention Dinner Dance on Saturday, 12th October. We are hopeful of raising several thousand dollars from generous advertisers (every small amount adds up) and cash donors, which will go to meet the university education expenses of financially disadvantaged students. We will at least enable one student’s dream come to true to obtain a professional qualification and break the cycle of poverty – a truly worthy next page please

Just a reminder to all Clubs: • Get behind your Zone Chairman (and other Clubs) and participate in “Follow your Steps” walk in the park to promote Lions. It will make you healthier, increase your endorphins, make your face smile and perhaps increase our membership when people see that we can have a good time as well as cook sausages! • Please register and come to our Marysville AGM and Convention. • Please pay your LCI, District and MD dues so your Club is financial before the AGM and Convention begins, otherwise delegates from your Club cannot participate in proceedings. • Please order your Christmas Cakes now and try to increase sales from last year. Remember you must put your Club Number on the order form this year. • Continue to promote fun, fellowship and happiness within the Club and everywhere. Things to believe and follow: Work for a cause, not applause; Live life to express, not impress; Don’t strive to make your presence noticed, make your absence felt.

From The

Lion’s Paw IN this issue I would like you to focus on the present District Governor’s motto of, “Promote Happiness” and at the same time let me ask you a question. Are you proud and happy to be a Member of your Club? It is all very well to take pride in the financial assistance your Club has been able to give to various charities in your community, but is that the full story? I have attended many training meetings to hear about how we should go about things, but rarely in any of these “training” meetings have I heard mention of the fun and happiness which is part of our existence. To a prospective new member we lay stress on our accomplishments, this is as it should be, but in all too few occasions have I heard about the enjoyment we get from what we do. There is no disgrace in admitting that we enjoy serving our community and that, as a group, it can be lot of fun. Let me give you an example. A sheep farmer, who was a Club Member offered the Club a considerable amount of sheep manure and the Club decided to sell this, all suitably bagged in plastic bags, on a door-to-door basis, within the community. One of my Club friends saw an old lady sitting in her front garden and decided to approach her. He introduced himself and for the next twenty minutes told her about the benefits of sheep manure to her garden, and finished by saying, “and it is only two dollars a bag”. “Oh,” she said, “I can’t afford that, I thought you were giving it away free”. My Lions colleague left the bag of manure with her and paid it from his own pocket. He said it was probably cheaper than hearing the laughter from the other Club members when they heard about what he had done, and how long it had taken him to do it. Which they did! Being a member of a Lions Club is not simply the opportunity of taking part in a series of commercial transactions, it provides us with a social outlet within the Club and within the community which should be stressed as one of the benefits of becoming a Lion. If we truly enjoy what we are doing, we should never lose a chance to PROMOTE HAPPINESS Harry Taylor

cause. From my visits I From page 1 note that several Clubs are already supporting other overseas students, so please consider supporting just one more. The cost of this project is under $1000 per year for three to four years depending on the course of study. On 19th August, 2013 Ferntree Gully Lioness Club held a Fashion Parade and Luncheon in the Ferntree Gully Guide Hall. The clothes were proudly presented by Cliché Fashions and modeled by several beautiful Lionesses. They raised $950 on the night – congratulations to all the Lionesses, a great effort. The Ferntree Gully Lionesses are similar to a lot of Lion’s Clubs – a small but very dedicated Club which are doing a lot of exceptional work in the community. Facing up to technology REMEMBER if you are organising an event or have held an event, make the most out of our District Facebook Page and also the District Newsletter. One of the things that Lions are not good at is ‘letting the world know how good they are’. We must change this way of thinking

O CTOBER 2013 PAGE 2

– we should shout from the rooftops about the great job we are doing – or at a minimum share it on Facebook and in the Newsletter. It gives other Clubs ideas, keeps us fresh and allows us to share the load. It will in time also increase our membership. There are a lot of people outside of Lions who don’t know what we do or what we stand for – if they did, they would be beating down the door to join. IP joins us in Queens Hall A COCKTAIL reception was organised by the Lions 201V5 Districts and Lions Club of State Parliament Victoria in recognition of Lions Clubs International President Barry Palmer AM on Monday, 2nd September, 2013 at the Queens Hall, Victorian Parliament House. 125 attended the meeting and Premier Denis Vincent Napthine spoke at the gathering. I was honoured to meet PDG Eddie and PDG Fred from Lions Club of Melbourne Host and remember their kindness shown to me as guardians while I was a student a long time ago. We did not meet the lady at the back! DG Chandra

THE LIONS EMBLEM

THE LIONS NAME ON June 17, 1917 at the invitation of Melvin Jones, delegates met in Chicago. The only point of contention was the selection of a name for the new organization. Melvin Jones had the idea of calling the new organization Lions. He was convinced that the lion stood for strength, courage, fidelity and vital action. On a secret ballot the name Lions was chosen. At the 1919 convention, there was a move to change the symbol, but a young attorney from Denver, Colorado rose to speak. His name was Halsted Ritter: “The name Lions stands not only for fraternity, good fellowship, strength of character and purpose, but above all, its combination of L-I-O-N-S heralds to the country the true meaning of citizenship: LIBERTY, INTELLIGENCE, OUR NATION’S SAFETY.” The January 1931 issue of THE LION

Magazine featured this interpretation of the association’s. Our name was not selected at random, neither was it a coined name. From time immemorial, the lion has been the symbol of all that was good, and because of the symbolism that name was chosen. Four outstanding qualities – Courage, Strength, Activity and Fidelity – had largely to do with the adoption of the name. The Lion symbol has been a symbol of fidelity through the ages and among all nations, ancient and modern. It stands for loyalty to a friend, loyalty to a principle, loyalty to a duty, loyalty to a trust. The emblem consists of a gold letter “L” on a circular area. Bordering this two Lion profiles facing away from the centre. The word “Lions” appears at the top and “International” at the bottom. The Lions face both past and future – showing both pride of heritage and confidence in the future.

Alan and Tricia proud to present house keys

Picture shows a house in the Habitat for Humanities “Heights Estate” in Yea. The good relationship between Habitat and Lions developed even more significantly through the Community Tool Library Project and subsequent projects in response to the 2009 bushfires.

T

HE Heights Estate in Yea will involve the eventual building of 25 houses primarily for the re-establishment of those who lost their properties in the disastrous Black Saturday bushfires of 2009. Six of these houses have already been built and have families living in them. Our District 201V5 Disaster Relief Trust made a substantial donation to this project when it was announced in the year following the bushfires. The one in the photo was nominated as the Lions Sponsored House. Lion Alan Hayward and wife Tricia had the pleasure of presenting the keys for the

house to Ruth and Tony along with the six children, Michella, Kerilee, Kurtis, Cody, and twins Baylee and Patrick on Saturday, 20th July a most happy occasion for all concerned. All of our District Lions Family should be very pleased and proud to have provided this family of eight their new house which will hopefully soon be transformed into their family home. Again, Lions can and do make a difference. Alan T Hayward 201V5 District Disaster Relief Trust

Monthly Walk turns into a Planting WELL we planned to do ‘walking’ and planting, however, it turned more into planting trees/plants at Emerald Park Lake on Saturday 21st September. Whilst we were not large on numbers, we still made a difference to the other volunteers around us and the environment. Thanks to members from Emerald Lions for attending the Lake two days in the row! Thanks also to Srisa from Knox Leos and my granddaughter, Zoe for making the effort. Making a difference is a wonderful feeling, but then I think all Lions know that feeling.

FOLLOW YOUR STEPS TAKE Your First Step to Heart Health Today The human body is made to walk. Walking 30 minutes a day cuts the rate of people becoming diabetic by more than half and it cuts the risk of people over 60 becoming diabetic by almost 70 percent. Walking cuts the risk of stroke by more than 25 percent. Walking reduces hypertension. The body has over 100,000 miles of blood vessels. Those blood vessels are more supple and healthier when we walk. Walking cuts the risk of cancer as well as diabetes and stroke. Women who walk have a 20 percent lower likelihood of getting breast cancer and a 31 percent lower risk of getting colon cancer. Women with breast cancer who walk regularly can reduce their recurrence rate and their mortality rate by over 50 percent. The human body works better when we walk. The body resists diseases better when we walk, and the body heals faster when we walk. We don't have to walk a lot. Thirty minutes a day has a huge impact on our health. Men who walk thirty minutes a day have a significantly lower level of prostate cancer. Men who walk regularly have a 60 percent lower risk of colon cancer. For men with prostate cancer, studies have shown that walkers have a 46 percent lower mortality rate. Walking also helps prevent depression, and people who walk regularly are more likely to see improvements in their depression.

Good stuff

Benefits of Walking In one study, people who walked and took medication scored twice as well in 30 days as the women who only took the medication. Another study showed that depressed people who walked regularly had a significantly higher level of not being depressed in a year compared to depressed people who did not walk. The body generates endorphins when we walk. Endorphins help us feel good. Walking strengthens the heart. Walking strengthens bones. Walking improves the circulatory system. Walking generates positive neurochemicals. Healthy eating is important but dieting can trigger negative neurochemicals and can be hard to do. Walking generates positive neuro-chemicals. People look forward to walking and enjoy walking. And research shows that fit beats fat for many people. Walking half an hour a day has health benefits that exceed the benefits of losing 20 pounds. When we walk every day, our bodies are healthier and stronger. A single 30 minute walk can reduce blood pressure by five points for over 20 hours.

Ashley’s Antarctica expedition by Foundation 2041 THIS month our guest speaker was Ashley Fletcher a young lady who has been chosen, to go to Antarctica by Foundation 2041, which is when the Antarctic Treaty ends. She is one of only 20 globally who has been given the privilege of going to Antarctica this year. The aim of the foundation is to inform recipients of the problems and needs of the Antarctic. And to help mould the leaders of the future so when the treaty is up for renewal, they will be in positions of influence. Ashley has to raise $20,000 to go on next year’s trip, in March. She has already raised the deposit of $5000 and has raised part of the rest. She is working full-time and saving like mad, and has received sums donations from other groups. Lions Club of Eltham is giving $250. Only being a small Club funds are very limited. But we were hoping that with the support of other Clubs in the District we might be able to give her a greater level of support.

O CTOBER 2013 PAGE 6

Walking reduces the risk of blood clots in your legs. People who walk regularly have much lower risk of deep vein thrombosis. People who walk are less likely to catch colds, and when people get colds, walkers have a 46 percent shorter symptom time from their colds. Walking improves the health of our blood, as well. Walking is a good boost of high density cholesterol and people with high levels of HDL are less likely to have heart attacks and stroke. Walking significantly diminishes the risk of hip fracture and the need for gallstone surgery is 20 to 31 percent lower for walkers. Walking is the right thing to do. The best news is that the 30 minutes doesn't have to be done in one lump of time. Two 15 minute walks achieve the same goals. Three 10 minute walks achieve most of those goals. We can walk 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night and achieve our walking goals. Walking feels good. It helps the body heal. It keeps the body healthy. It improves our biological health, our physical health, our psychosocial health, and helps with our emotional health. Walking can literally add years entire years to your life. Its good to walk. Be good to yourself. Be good to your body. ALL ACCUPRESSURE POINTS ARE IN THE SOLE OF YOUR FEET … JUST LIKE YOUR HANDS !!

201 V5 Briefs

DONVALE Lions recently had another health day for young children 3.5 to 6 years of age from the local schools and preschools at the Donburn Primary School. A record 126 children were screened for suspect eye problems like amblyopia (lazy eye) and for hearing loss. Qualified authoptists performed the eye screening and referred several of the children to their GP for further testing. University students from the Auditory Department of the University of Melbourne performed the hearing loss screenings. Nine of the children had some temporary fluid issues that were detected as impacting upon their hearing, and a further 9 didn’t give normal results even though no fluid was detected and could therefore have long term hearing impairment, if not addressed.
