The C2ER Cost of Living Index for Q1 ’18 indicates that Houston’s after-taxes living costs are 3.1 percent below the national average. Among the nation’s 20 most populous metropolitan areas, Houston’s living costs are 25.3 percent below the average, ranking it fourth most affordable.



Among the nation’s 20 most populous metro areas, Houston’s housing costs are 44.8 percent below average. Excluding the two most expensive housing markets—New York and San Francisco—which tend to skew the average, Houston’s housing costs are still 33.3 percent below the major metro average.
