LIVING SUSTAINABLE TOMORROWS 28-31 October 2015 At Auroville (near Puducherry)

Living Sustainable Tomorrows is a 4-day workshop in Auroville on sustainability. Participants will engage with the challenge of building a sustainable India by looking at the present challenges in key areas like the environment, energy and the economy, and will learn how Auroville has responded to them. Another important aspect of sustainability concerns changing the paradigmic perspectives that are endangering the world, and this implies a process of personal discovery and transformation as prerequisites for anybody wishing to be a leader in sustainable change.

LIVING SUSTAINABLE TOMORROWS 28-31 October 2015

PROGRAM

This is an introductory workshop on principles of leadership and sustainability. Through an integration of different modules and a series of progressive sessions, experienced facilitators guide participants to individually discover their personal relationship to sustainability and their effectiveness as a leader. Consequently, the workshop will also focus upon areas like personal effectiveness and value clarification, on accessing one’s deepest aspirations, and on aligning individual growth with the larger collective needs. It will also examine how individuals interact with each other and how groups can become more creative. There will also be an introduction to the spiritual philosophy that underpins the Auroville experiment.

PARTICIPANTS

We invite professionals that have an interest in sustainability and deepening their understanding of their personal values. This is a limited capacity, highly interactive event that requires active participation of all attendees.

FOCUS AREAS Afforestation

The health of the land is one index of the health of a society. In 1968, the land on which Auroville was to be built was in an advanced state of desertification. Aurovilians have nursed it back to health through an integrated programme of land restoration, including reintroducing the original forest type which once flourished here and little of which now remains. Auroville botanists will talk to us about the ecological restoration work in Auroville and in the surrounding bioregion.

Water

Access to water will define development throughout the world in the near future. Effective water resource management is fundamental to sustainable development. There will be an overview of the water resource management undertaken by Auroville, which includes contour bunding, groundwater recharge, and rainwater harvesting. There will also be an introduction to decentralized wastewater treatment systems.

Energy

Auroville is an inspiring example of sustainable development through its promotion and use of renewable and decentralized energy systems for over forty years. The immense energy shortage in India, which sabotages development, forces one to think creatively of sustainable solutions. Toine van Megen, who has helped shape the renewable energy sector in Auroville and has held senior management and corporate leadership positions in the global wind energy sector, shares his expertise and showcases how Auroville contributed to Tamil Nadu’s rooftop solar policy, and in particular solar netmetering becoming a reality.

Waste management

Whether it is toxic effluent from factories flowing into neighboring rivers, tons of trash dumped illegally and then ignited to release toxic fumes, or human waste deposited along the streets of cities or towns – waste is a daunting challenge facing today’s India. An Aurovilian who has been deeply involved in waste management will talk about the sustainable treatment of sewage and solid waste, accompanied by a site visit.

Sustainable agriculture

Industrial agriculture has increased productivity in the short term but endangered food security for future generations. Eschewing the short-term gains of industrial agriculture, Auroville, since its inception in 1968, has been practicing organic agriculture. Auroville has proven expertise in not just organic agriculture, but sustainable organic agriculture where water and energy are optimally used. Participants visit Solitude Farm and learn about the farmer Krishna Mckenzie’s achievements in community-supported agriculture in the context of food security for India.

The economy

The present global economy, from a sustainability perspective, is dysfunctional as it rewards behavior that accelerates climate change, pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. Auroville’s economy offers an alternative as it is based upon stewardship rather than exploitation , and respects both individuals and the environment. During the workshop, the essential features of the Auroville economy will be presented as well as innovative experiments in community food distribution and commerce. Please note: During the workshop, we will give you an introduction to the Matrimandir and you can view it from a distance. Unfortunately, groups are not permitted to enter the area. Those who wish to meditate in the inner chamber should arrange the visit either before or after the workshop. For details, check the site: http://www.auroville.org/thecity/matrimandir/mm_access_policy.htm.

Personal discovery and effectiveness

One of the most neglected areas of sustainability relates to how our personal and cultural paradigms impact the world. It is crucial that we access our deepest assumptions regarding our identity and our relationship to nature and, if we find them to be unsustainable, to transform them into life-enhancing perspectives. The workshop will provide opportunities for this self-exploration. Sustainable leadership is another important dimension of effective sustainable action. Participants will understand and engage with critical dimensions of leadership, such as clarifying values and actively engaging with the concepts of disclosure and feedback. They will identify their predominant communication styles and use the tools of transaction analysis to learn effective communication patterns.

Living Sustainable Tomorrows is a transformative experience that will inspire you to take on the challenge of sustainability in personally meaningful ways!
