The Buzz Hello DAC members, There is no doubt that you may have heard that the DAC is BACK! But what exactly does this catchphrase mean? Well, let me say it this way. The DAC is moving towards achieving excellence. For us, that means exceeding even our own expectations in providing exceptional member services.

Recently, our team has gone through a program titled “Leadership 101.” This course is designed to teach new tools that will help each employee to feel empowered to deliver “Excellence in Service” on which our members can truly rely. In addition, we are currently developing our annual strategic plan for 2017 that focuses on fine-tuning our processes and cutting out obstacles that prevent us from delivering exceptional service. In essence, we’ll be going for the GOLD every day! We are refining not only our service but our environment as well. As of this newsletter, we have begun construction to remodel our locker rooms. We’re also opening a new DAC Sports Boutique in the fall, which will deliver a lot of the new products that you have asked for and should be helpful in assisting with your workouts and routine gift giving.

There is a lot of work ahead, and this is just the beginning. Our members may also expect many new programs for all ages including robust fitness classes that challenge each of us to build strong, healthy bodies and minds.

Externally, we have created a revitalized Corporate Wellness program that reaches far outside of the DAC doors to the many businesses around us. Throughout the year, companies will be participating in corporate challenges, so look for many new faces around the Club! We are also proud to announce a rest yled restaurant and a new menu personally created by Chef Alex. I know he is excited and looking forward to sharing his food with you. This is an exciting time in the life of the Downtown Athletic Club. I am proud to be a part of this team that works hard day after day to make the DAC a special yet unique place where fitness truly meets social.

Leadership - Enthusiasm Positivity The DAC has severed our relationship with our general manager, Carlo DiMaria. This removal was effective August 1, 2016. While we look for another general manager, Rob E. Bennett will step into the position and move the work of the DAC forward.

OLYMPIC FEVER AT THE DAC

Two years ago we began a special partnership with the Oregon Track Club Elite and these world-class athletes have become part of the fabric of the DAC communit y. We are so excited to cheer on the seven OTC Elite athletes and DAC members at the Olympics this month as they compete for their respective countries in Rio! Charles Jock, USA • Mens 800m “My Road to Rio required a lot of patience and careful consideration of the ‘little things.’ With the excellent facilities available to the Oregon Track Club Elite at the DAC, I was able to maintain overall health and balance through Core and Power yoga classes and utilized the open spaces for self guided injury prevention and prehabilitation exercises. Having faced many injury related issues in the past, keeping myself healthy was the greatest hurdle I had to overcome to receive the honor of representing the US at the Olympics.” Tom Farrell, Great Britain • Mens 5000m “Oregon Track Club Elite and the DAC have played a big part in my road to Rio. My coach Mark Rowland has been instrumental in the process and putting together a great team of athletes has been excellent for us all. Being able to use the DAC’s facilities during the last two years has been a great help, somewhere for us to meet as a team, do our weights and core, go for a run, use the showers and locker rooms and head home. It’s a great, all-around facility that is a help to us all. It is a huge honour to represent Great Britain at The Olympics this year, knowing that out of the whole population of GB, only 366 athletes have been picked to compete in Rio and I am one of them. It is a tiny percentage and I am ready to represent my country and do it proud.” Francine Niyonsaba, Burundi • Womens

800m “My goal was training hard to see if I could get to Rio and achieve my dream. I was happy to be able to use all the facilities at the Downtown Athletic Club in my training, it was more than I had access to before. Going to Rio means a lot to me. I’ve always dreamed of doing the best for my country which is why I want to go to Rio and win.”

Member in Motion: Liz Glover Born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, DAC member Liz Glover has blazed her own path in life. When she speaks, her sweet, southern drawl suggests that she is not from around here but she embodies everything Oregon is proud to be – hardworking, adventurous and fiercely independent. As she’s grown older, she has only gotten stronger. After receiving her master’s degree in physical education, Liz wrote a letter to inquire about open teaching positions at the Universit y of Oregon, which had one of the best physical education programs in the country. “Yes, there was a time in the 60s when you could just write a letter and say you wanted to teach somewhere, you didn’t need to send your resume or anything.” The next thing she knew, she was headed west to teach at “Ory-gun” as her family called it. At one point in life, Liz had considered moving back to Charlotte. That was until this conversation with a friend, “She asked how far Charlotte was from the coast and I said, ‘Four hours.’ I thought, well, that’s prett y far isn’t it? Living here in Eugene it’s just an hour away. The mountains are only one and a half hours away from Charlotte; but, then I thought, the mountains are the size of Spencer Butte, which is right outside my window. So I don’t think I want to go back.” She’s been in Eugene now for 50 years and she’s never second-guessed her decision. Liz joined the DAC a year after it opened in 1986. Some of her students were lifeguards and her broker was a member, so she came to check it out. She liked what she saw so she paid her $100 initiation fee and signed up. “It’s a wonderful place to be. You’ve got food, the pool, different classes and personnel to help you. There are other places you could go to work out but they aren’t as nice as this place and I want something nice in my life.” During her time here, Liz has transformed herself. “I never looked at what my BMI was, but I believe I was obese.” She had persistent knee problems and after a hip operation she would do anything to avoid additional surgery. Liz focused on getting rid of the weight and strengthening her muscles hoping to avoid the all-too-common knee operation. (continued from previous page) Through diet and nutrition, Liz lost 50 pounds. With the help of a physical therapist, Liz was able to strengthen those muscles. She decided to start a weight training circuit at the DAC to continue the foundation she built with her physical therapist.

Liz doesn’t limit herself to dry land, she rounds out her week with water aerobics classes. “I try to do water aerobics on Mondays and Fridays, then Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays I do my weight training.”

“So I got a hold of Sandra (personal trainer), and I asked if she could set me up so I could do my weight training,” Liz shares.

Just like everyone, Liz has days where she doesn’t want to work out but she uses that as fuel. “If you skip too many days, you’ll never come back. I don’t want that happening. The more you do it, the better you get, the easier it gets, the more you enjoy it, and then you keep it up!”

Looking at her tracking sheet, kept on the second f loor, she remarks, “You may not go up very fast, but eventually you do improve. On one machine I started at 30 pounds, now I’m at 60. That’s empowering, I feel so strong.” Not only is she feeling strong, she is walking better and with less pain. “Sometimes I even walk out of the house, get to where I’m going and realize I forgot my cane!” Sandra doesn’t work with Liz as a client, but she always keeps an eye out for Liz on fitness f loor. “It’s been so fun watching Liz progress and get stronger. Seeing her every day in her sassy leggings is a true inspiration,” says Sandra.

Though she admits she is behind on technology, Facebook and email, she is not afraid to try new things when it comes to her workout routine. Just this month, she joined the MELT foam rolling workshop series. “Oh, I have to put a plug in for that,” she says enthusiastically. “Everyone who took that class felt a difference after every week. Even this week, now that it’s over, I feel like I’m missing it.” Next on her list is to try Pilates. “There is so much to do here I could spend all day here and become a gym rat.” Thank you to Liz Glover for sharing your story.

Ryan Wood, DAC Personal Trainer Instructions: 1. Get into pushup position, but rest your forearms on the ground instead of your hands. Arms should be in a 90 degree angle at your elbow. 2. Pop your hips up into a pike (picture 1) and then settle into the proper plank position by creating a straight line from head to toes. (picture 2) 3. Don’t hold your hands together and make sure your shoulder blades are pulled down. Draw your abs in tight. 4. Hold this position as long as you can.

Start with 30 seconds or try alternating 20 seconds on and 20 seconds off, working your way up to longer intervals. Once you’ve hit two minutes, you can work in some new variations making it harder.
