Main Stage Speakers Be inspired and energized. The Five Keys of Momentum Every individual and team has potential energy. We also all have self-sabotaging behaviors that keep us from realizing this potential. Realizing our potential = creating momentum = taking action. Monday morning’s speaker, Chris Helder, will super charge our conference experience by sharing the 5 keys to creating momentum in business and in life.

equipment How Robotics Will Change Your Operations by 2020 Robotics already have a foothold in warehousing and distribution in the form of automatic palletizers. Just how much further are robotics likely to go? This session will identify key trends in the technology and its use and give you an early look at how different and more efficient your operations could be in a few short years. To Automate or Not to Automate? That Is the Question

A Journey of Courage, Injury, Resilience and Triumph While on a routine combat patrol, an enemy sniper shot Justin Constantine in the head, causing catastrophic damage, destroying his jaws and much of his face. Thanks to the heroic efforts of a young Navy Corpsman, and his own warrior spirit, Justin is still with us today. Since his injury, Justin has continued to lead and serve as a role model to other Wounded Warriors. Justin’s personal awards include the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. WERC proudly welcomes this hero to our stage to share his story. Through his journey of courage, injury, resilience and triumph, Justin demonstrates that we are all stronger than we think. You’ll be inspired to seek opportunities to excel both in the workplace and in your personal live by overcoming adversity, practicing teamwork and leadership and harnessing the power within yourself.

Beyond Balance: Work/Life Integration Too often when trying to “balance” the demands of work with the complexities of life, we are selling short our best efforts, burdening ourselves with guilt, and exhausting our energy. In the Wednesday morning presentation, Dan Thurmon advises us to adopt an “Off Balance On Purpose” approach as a realistic and empowering alternative. Enjoy the entertainment as Dan provides a new model for viewing work objectives not as separate or competing with life, but as a vital and connected component.

Smaller and more frequent deliveries, the rise of e-commerce, complex order fulfillment requirements and the availability of labor are all causing warehouse professionals to take a hard look at automation for their facilities. But when is the right time to automate? With due respect to Shakespeare, that is the question. And like Hamlet, it can be a vexing one. In this session, Bob Trebilcock, editorial director of Supply Chain Management Review and executive editor of Modern Materials Handling magazine, will lead a panel discussion of experienced warehouse professionals who have wrestled with that question in their facilities. Bob Trebilcock Editorial Director, Supply Chain Mgmt Review, Peerless Media Pete Rector EVP, GENCO Rocky Ruane Regional Director of Warehouse Operations, IL/ MN Wirtz Beverage Co. William Stark VP, Engineering, United Stationers Supply Co.

every interest or issue. Sustainable DCs, Old or New Learn 10+ ways you can retrofit an existing facility to improve its sustainability as well as lower your operating costs and find out how to build a new sustainable building from scratch along with the cost implications of doing so. You’ll hear about actual projects implemented at Murphy Warehouse Co. and others to make the operations more sustainable and see actual cost savings numbers. Richard T. Murphy, Jr. CLP President & CEO, Murphy Warehouse Company

Committing to a DC Design When Demand is Unpredictable Many companies that have experienced growth over the last few years have been reluctant to make major changes to their DCs because of unpredictable demand patterns. After the last decade of change, it seems the only thing certain is uncertainty about growth levels, rising numbers of SKUs, e-commerce changes, and a host of other factors. If the passage of time has not made the future any clearer, then the best course of action for growing companies is to invest in flexible technology and designs that can rapidly scale up, scale down, or be reconfigured to meet future needs. Join this session to hear how to develop an analytical tool to design a DC with infinitely varied demand forecasts, how to determine if this is the time to upgrade a WMS, or to hold off, and which distribution technologies are the most—and least—adaptable to changing conditions. Ian Hobkirk Managing Director, Commonwealth Supply Chain Advisors

Retail at a Crossroads, the Impact on Distribution and Warehousing Across the supply chain, retailers are changing their focus from “pallets to stores” to “boxes to doors.” In response to this new demand driver, many warehouse projects are catering to e-fulfillment— both e-commerce-only retailers like Amazon and multi-channel retailers such as Walmart and Target. An increasing percentage of warehouse space will support processes to get items from the shelves to the customer’s front door as quickly as possible. Almost every major e-commerce company and many traditional brick and mortar retailers are actively and rapidly expanding their e-commerce supply chain. From a real estate standpoint, it will be the only way to stay relevant in the new retail landscape. John C. Morris Senior Managing Director, Cushman & Wakefield

This session will explain why Mondelez International chose a Vested path, their experience applying the Vested Outsourcing methodology and how it has dramatically increased trust and collaboration— and is setting the stage for all of the companies to achieve that elusive “win-win” relationship. Shelly Cihak Sr Director Business Development, Exel Kate L. Vitasek Founder and Managing Partner, Vested

Horizontal Collaboration: From Theory to Action

outsourcing

Over the past few years, horizontal collaboration in transport and logistics has transformed from a theoretical concept into a powerful method to drive cost and inefficiencies out of the supply chain. Large shippers in Europe have taken the pole position when it comes to applying this radically new business model in practice. In this session, you will learn what the “big fuss” is all about, how horizontal collaboration can be applied to your logistics network, and what lessons can be drawn from the European experience, in order to hit the ground running in the U.S.

Food for Thought on Platinum Produce DC In 2011, Testa Produce moved into their new LEED Platinum certified 91,300 square foot produce DC in Chicago marking it as the first Platinum refrigerated food distribution facility in the U.S. The LEED building requirements provided the foundation for the integration of several strategies to lower operating costs, increase asset value, reduce waste, conserve energy and water, and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Now, after having occupied the facility for more than two years, how have these strategies performed? This case study will provide a post-occupancy performance evaluation of many green strategies and lessons learned. In addition, this session will explore how Testa Produce’s sustainability leadership goes “beyond the building” to influence all levels of stakeholders. The Physical Internet: A Better Way? “I claim that the current logistics and distribution system is not sustainable ... economically, environmentally, or socially.” With that claim, Ben Montreuil from the University of Laval (Quebec, Canada) launched the concept of the Physical Internet (PI). A short “definition” of the Physical Internet is that it will merge computing with modern logistics by standardizing modular containers and sharing resources among companies. In these ways, the Physical Internet will produce a collaborative, highly-distributed, and highlyleveraged logistics system. Sound far-fetched and complicated? In this session, Dr. Montreuil may just make you into a believer. Benoit Montreuil, PhD Professor, Université Laval

WERC puts together a conference that allows warehousing professionals to learn from each other and bring back value to their companies. Well worth the investment.

Distracted Driving in the Transportation Sector For many companies, the latest statistics on distracted driving indicate that it’s an issue that needs to be addressed. Best practices for combating distracted driving include effective training and a strong distracted driving policy. This session will outline practical methods for addressing the key sources of distraction by considering how to create effective training and policy, along with methods for implementing cultural change in this critical area of public safety. Steven Garrish Senior Manager II – Regional Safety – Logistics, Walmart Stores, Inc.

Synchronizing Inbound Transportation & Distribution to Maximize Efficiency Managing inbound supply has generally taken a back seat to the always service-sensitive outbound shipments. For many companies, the opportunity to synchronize their inbound supply chain may have more impact on cost and productivity than efforts on the customer-driven outbound shipments. This session will look at how to optimize inbound freight flow to improve receiving predictability and lower landed costs. We will review the steps to tackling the biggest challenge to synchronization—controlling the inbound flow. We also will explore transportation optimization strategies that maximize warehouse dock efficiencies and lower transportation costs. Finally, we will show how a synchronized inbound flow will drive warehouse productivity metrics and improve resource management. Mark Wagner VP, Engineering and Consulting, GENCO

Using these conveyors, 250 employees sort 320,000 packages per day with a throughput ranging from 28,000 to 32,000 packages. Join this tour to see this operation in action!

Chicago Tribune Printing & Distribution Solutions Take a tour of the largest newspaper production facility in North America—producing not just the prestigious Chicago Tribune (daily circ., 414,930) but also many commercial products like the Sun-Times Media Group, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, etc. You’ll see a newsprint warehouse of just under 1 million sq. ft. that was opened in 1982, with 2 overhead cranes, 10 presses and 7 inserting machines that handle over 20 billion advertising preprints annually.

Testa Produce Testa Produce is LEED certified as the first Platinum Refrigerated Food Distribution Facility in the U.S. Located in the Back of the Yards neighborhood in the Chicago Industrial Stockyards Corridor, the land was an old Brownfield site, and has been restored into an entirely green, sustainable 91,300 sq. ft. facility with a total site footprint of 571,928 sq. ft. Tour this facility and see all the bells and whistles of green initiatives in a DC including: • Wind power, solar energy and water management systems that decrease building’s energy demand by approximately 35-40% • Solar panels

• A 764,085 gallon water retention pond that collects rainwater and a 140,132 gallon bioswales system • Landscaping with native plant species • Recycling of all paper, plastic, and cardboard

Threadless A unique community-based design company that ships products designed and voted on by their world-wide community, the Threadless warehouse is 50,000 sq. ft. located at their HQ. The only Threadless DC, it ships millions of products with over 50% shipped internationally. Threadless’ uniqueness extends to its focus on trust as a core value, its emphasis on fun as a motivator for employees, and involving the customer as designer, blogger and buyer. Of course, you’ll get to see how they use the SaaS WMS “Snapfulfil” in handling 9,000 SKUs—and we’re pretty sure you’ll have some fun doing so.

UPS Chicago Area Consolidation Hub Visit UPS’s main consolidation point for its ground network and, at 1.5 million sq. ft. and 5,700 associates, one of the largest intermodal operations in the country. The Chicago Area Consolidation Hub (CACH) receives and dispatches more than 4,000 trailers per day utilizing advanced sorting technology that controls package flows. Visitors will observe the world’s largest ground package distribution facility in full operation as it processes (sorts) 1.6 –1.8 million packages per day.

Greater Chicago Food Depository The Greater Chicago Food Depository is Chicago’s food bank and its mission is to provide food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. The Food Depository is based in a 268,000 square foot facility on the Southwest Side of Chicago. Last year, GCFD distributed 66 million pounds of food through its warehouse into the community. Every weekday, approximately 150,000 pounds of fresh fruit, vegetables, protein, and shelf-stable items are distributed and the daily distribution record is 400,000 pounds of food.
