We work together with occupational therapists, physiotherapists, orthotists, rehabilitation centres as well as specialists such as rheumatologists and neurologists in order to make sure the patient is aware of what is available to ensure that they remain independent as long as possible. With a registered nurse on board, we are able to assist people at home to assess their needs and show them how to use the equipment. Multi-disciplinary meetings are held weekly where breast surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, plastic surgeons, pathologists and allied medical personnel such as dieticians, counsellors and physiotherapists discuss individual cases and recommend treatment that is individualised and appropriate for the management of each case. We believe in the holistic management of patients with cancers and attention to all details regarding each treatment are addressed in the forum thereby ensuring that you will receive the best available treatment. We have launched our live website where communities can interact with the unit and ask the breast specialists questions related to breast cancer screening, and management (surgery, chemotherapy and radiation) free of charge.

in the surgical management of breast cancer has been a limitation in the extent of surgery to remove the draining lymph glands under the arm and these will only be removed if actually involved with cancer. This advance has been achieved through the use of a sentinel node biopsy. The multi-disciplinary team will review all the surgical, clinical and pathological findings and will thereby be able to assess the need for additional treatments such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy or hormonal therapy. That being said, most breast cancers an be effectively treated if diagnosed early. Screening mammography can detect early breast cancers and can provide the possibility of a cure. Breast self examination is also important as well as following up on any abnormal breast masses. Lifestyle modifications like weight loss, exercise, smoking cessation and avoiding alcohol can also lower breast cancer risk.

The multi-disciplinary approach to the management of patients with cancers has led to the biggest advances and improvements in cancer care over the past 30 years. Patients with breast cancer are all individuals with their own peculiar set of circumstances that need to be borne in mind when deciding on the best treatment for their condition. From an oncology point of view decisions need to be taken as to whether breast conservation (only removing the lump) or mastectomy is appropriate. It should be emphasised that the majority of women can preserve their breasts and generally mastectomy is reserved for those with very advanced disease. A major advance

Prof Donald Hudson has been Head of Department for the last 20 years. He has trained many internationally renowned plastic surgeons who work in South Africa, England, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Dr Kevin Adams is a consultant and senior specialist working at both Groote Schuur and Red Cross Hospitals. He did his basic surgical training in England before returning to South Africa to do his specialist training in 2000. Dr Gary dos Passos did his basic surgical training at Wits before relocating to Cape Town in order to do his specialist training in the best plastic surgery unit in the country.
